Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi

Nothing new to offer

A bunch of talented actors, a city called Mumbai and whoa, you have a film tracing the journey of each individual vis-a-vis the city. It’s not the first such film, there have been several with this theme, but the fascination never ceases. Writer-director Rakesh Mehta, who makes his debut with Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi has tried to present the story with droll humour. Problem is, it works only in parts.
As for the story, there’s Salman (Kay Kay Menon) who wants to avenge the murder of his parents, Amol Ganguly (Ranvir Shouri), who has just been mercilessly dumped by his girl-friend, a small-town girl Dolly (Neha Bhasin) landing in the city of dreams to get a foothold in films and a cop ACP Chautala (Manu Rishi Chadha) from Haryana who is on punishment transfer to Mumbai. His crime is that he is an honest cop. Another important character is Ghosh (Pradhuman Singh) a death-obessesed rock star who suggests various ways of committing suicide to his friend Amol, who is struggling to come to terms with his girlfriend’s betrayal.
It is with this motley of characters that the film tries to capture the spirit of the city. So far, so good. What stops you from giving full marks to the narration is the loopholes in the sketches of some characters. You wonder how Amol who is scared to take his own life becomes a maniac murderer in the climax! Dolly’s track is completely predictable and contrived. Also, the pace of the film, specially in the second half is slow.
As far as the actors are concerned Pradhuman Singh stands out for his anti- Christ rockstar act replete with the funky get-up and Saja e maut, tattooed on his lower back. Manu Rishi Chahdha as the Haryanvi cop is likeable, while Ranvir Shouri and Kay Kay Menon are their usual reliable selves.
The film has been pitched as a comedy drama and though there’s drama, the humour is lacking making it a grim tale. The mayhem in the climax puts you off completely. A good cast and a potentially good narrative has been wasted.

Fast, but can get you ‘furious'! Movie - Tezz

Fast, but can get you ‘furious'!
A bomb has been planted in a train going from London to Glasgow, which will blow off if the speed is reduced to less than 60, killing more than 500 passengers on the train (Speed on the railway track?). To tackle the situation, the best men are required, so enter the just-retired cop Arjun Khanna, who’s called back on this last mission minutes before he’s about to board a flight to India with his family. ‘Give me the money or…’ threatens Aakash Rana (Ajay), before swearing ‘teri maa ki’, when a ball accidentally hits him. Bingo, the cops know that the caller is an Indian and the chase begins. We are told early on that four years back, Aakash was deported to India leaving behind his pregnant wife Nikita (Kangana), as he was working in UK without a work permit. No one knows why Nikita couldn’t have gone to India, if Aakash couldn’t come to London. Anyway, don’t ask how, but Aakash somehow manages to return to London as a man on a mission, teams up with other illegal immigrants — Aadil (Zayed) and Megha (Sameera) — who he had helped in their times of crisis, and plots the train bombing. Talk of rebel without a cause! But as Arjun gets hot on their case, there are enough twists and chases in the tale to lend the film some interesting moments.
Unfortunately however, the chases are the only high points of the film that falters in between all the action sequences. The chase especially between Arjun and Aadil and that of Megha on the bike are worth a mention. Though one wonders why Megha would hit the roads, when being chased by cops, instead of opting for the cover of forests and making use of her dirt bike to have an advantage over the cops in cars?
Both Anil and Ajay deliver good performances, as they try their best to navigate around the loopholes that abound in the storyline. But unsupported by the strong plot they simply fail to move the audience. Their performances leave you nothing to complain, but the story keeps putting them in situations which make you doubt the intelligence of their characters. The love story is uninspiring and you don’t feel for either Nikita or Aakash as the parted in love couple. The surprise package here is Sameera, who steals the show as the biker babe. Given that most of the stunts are of course done by stuntguys, she makes her part seem convincing enough despite her ugly wigs, as does Zayed in his nearly six scene role. Even an actor like Mohanlal is wasted completely here, as he looks ill at ease as the overweight cop travelling in the ill-fated train. Kangana is strictly okay, Boman is over the top and Mallika Sherawat’s Laila fails to excite any ‘Majnoo’. One expected better from Priyan, and the action thriller just doesn’t thrill enough.
The film is a mishmash of several Holly flicks and the train sequence is quite reminiscent of Vinod Khanna-Dharmendra starrer, The Burning Train, which actually seems like a better bet in comparison. The film is worth a watch only for the few chase sequences, but that apart, there’s nothing that clicks. The film fails to rise above the average at any point and throughout Tezz seems rather slow as far as logic uptake is concerned, and there are times when you can’t seem to justify the actions of the characters. Situations seem thrown in for the convenience just to ensure a smoother flow of the otherwise average story. The climax gives you the feeling of ‘much ado about nothing!’ Overall, the film is strictly worth a watch for some action moments and a few good chases only.

Actor Akshay Kumar and stylist-turned-co-producer Shabina Khan apparently got into a tiff recently

Akshay-Shabina fight on the sets!

Actor Akshay Kumar and stylist-turned-co-producer Shabina Khan apparently got into a tiff recently, that stalled the shoot of their film Rowdy Rathore for several hours. According to a source from the sets, the two good friends got into an argument over the colour of the pants that Akshay was to wear for a particular scene. “Shabina wanted Akshay to wear pants in a loud yellow colour, but he was not too happy with the colour and asked her to change it. Akshay is always very open to experimenting with styles and colours, but thought that the colour was too loud for Bolly audiences and put his foot down. Shabina, on the other hand, insisted that it either had to be that colour or an equally bright pink colour and both refused to give in,” said the source. “It was later when someone suggested a bright shade of blue that the two finally agreed. But the argument did delay the shoot by several hours and part of the scene had to be shot the next day,” adds the source. As for AK and Shabina, well, all’s well that ends well and the two were seen joking and sharing food after some time itself.

‘Where is the recognition?’
Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, who turns 83 today, says she is still awaiting her due from the Indian government

She’s the only woman designer from the country to have been awarded the prestigious Academy Award and she turns 83 today. Having worked in over 100 films in Indian cinema, apart from working with noted international directors like Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough, costume designer Bhanu Athaiya needs no introduction. Yet she minces no words to voice her cynicism, when she says, “I’ve been working hard in this industry for so many years now. But where is the recognition from the Indian government? Being the only woman to have received an Oscar is one thing. But the film Gandhi is recognised the world over. It is a huge achievement; Gandhi, to me, is a landmark film in terms of designing — there were thousands of costumes and so many characters. It is very disappointing to see no response from our government.”
The designer has worked for Guru Dutt classics such as Pyaasa, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, apart from designing for films made by the likes of Yash Chopra and Raj Kapoor. Her successful filmography reaffirms her position today. Yes, she’s received two National Awards, but the highest honour Padma still eludes her.
That however hasn’t deterred the veteran designer from looking forward to new chapters. Bhanu, in fact, asserts that she’s always busy. At the moment, she’s working on a new TV show Mahabharat, which is under production. The costumes in the show will be completely based on her vision. But she keeps mum on the topic: “It’s still in the production stages, so I can’t really talk about the project now.”
Ask her about her views on the designing scene in the present Bollywood films and pat comes her reply, “Nothing exciting is happening, if you ask me. I saw a lot of films recently and as far as mujras are concerned, the costumes aren’t as they should be.” Bhanu promises that she herself is in a new phase of designing. “And I’m hoping for something exciting to happen from my part,” she smiles.

Fast forward
Actor Deepika Padukone is living life out of a suitcase as she skips from one set to the other, juggling her projects

B-towners often have to be away from home for months and live out of a suitcase as they are juggling projects and film commitments,. Actor Deepika Padukone has been living life in fast forward mode since quite sometime now. The actor, who has been shooting round-the-clock for the past couple of months, is working doubly hard to ensure that none of her film schedules clash with each other. Deepika, whose last release was Desiboyz with actor John Abraham, immediately started shooting for actor Saif Ali Khan’s home production, Cocktail. After wrapping up her film with Saif, Deepika didn’t have any time for a break and immediately jumped onto the next project, director Ayan Mukerji’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani with actor Ranbir Kapoor.
Ex-flames, Ranbir and Dippy coming together in the film had created a big stir in the industry. But both Dippy and Ranbir ensured that their film’s schedule was not disrupted. A source close to the pretty actor says, “2012 is going to be packed for Deepika because she has a couple of films to finish. She hasn’t had a break since Desiboyz released as she has been shooting back to back for her projects. The latest one is her film with superstar Rajinikanth. Deepika is currently in Kerela shooting for Kochadaiyaan.”
Deepika’s last film with Rajini, Rana got stalled mid-way due to the superstar’s ill health and ever since, the actor has been waiting for another chance to work with him again. After she wrapped up the first schedule for Ayan’s film in the hilly terrains of Manali and Mussoorie, she headed down South. Instead of taking a breather and heading to Bangalore, where her family resides, the workaholic actor headed straight to Kerela to wrap up her portions. Buzz is that she will be completeing her portions in four days and will again head back to the north to finish shooting for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The source adds, “Dippy was not a part of the London schedule of Kochadaiyaan so she wants to make sure she makes the most of her four day shoot. She wants to finish shooting for the film in record time to head back to Manali.”

Fans and bookies await baby news as WillKat celebrate first wedding anniv

Britain’s Prince William and his wife Catherine will this weekend mark a triumphant first year of marriage as a hopeful nation waits for news of a royal heir.
The couple has lost none of their popularity in Britain and abroad, 12 months after their fairytale wedding drew cheering crowds and two billion TV viewers, with one royal expert crediting them with “saving the monarchy”.
But fans are still awaiting word that they are expecting a baby, and the former Kate Middleton appears to have bucked a royal trend.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton told a year ago: “If Kate is not pregnant in the next nine months, she’ll be defying 200 years of royal tradition.”
Press speculation has been feverish and bookies are offering narrow odds on a new arrival in 2013, while succession rules were changed last year so that any daughter of the couple would be equal with boys in the queue for the throne.
“William has said he'll take things one step at a time,” informed royal writer Robert Jobson.
“But Kate is at 30, I'm sure she wants to start a family as soon as she can. She's been with this man for eight years of her life, she's clearly in love with him.”
The pair will celebrate their anniversary on Sunday “privately”, a spokeswoman said, ahead of public appearances for the Queen's diamond jubilee in June and a joint trip to Singapore, Malaysia, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands.

‘I was called the ganda hero’ From a chappal entry in Bollywood to an Oscar debut in Hollywood, actor Anil Kapoor has every reason to look back in... humour!

‘I was called the ganda hero’
From a chappal entry in Bollywood to an Oscar debut in Hollywood, actor Anil Kapoor has every reason to look back in... humour!

Actor Anil Kapoor recently revealed his daredevil side when he took to racing with actor Ajay Devgn in high-end sports cars on the F1 circuit to promote his latest release Tezz. “The speed factor involved was such an adrenaline rush, though a race like this is not without risks,” the actor shares excitedly. But then this is nothing new for the actor, who admits to having taken many such risks all through his career. “I’ve always taken risks, be it in my choice of roles or films or even Hollywood, though I’ve never been reckless,” says Anil. In a candid chat with After Hrs, the actor talks about his almost three decade long career in entertainment:

Oscars, BAFTAs… what about Cannes?
If I have a film, I’d love to go there too. But I’m glad that Sonam (daughter, actor Sonam Kapoor) has made it there so early in her career, I’m so proud of her. I think if I go there, I might be referred to as her dad, than the actor (laughs).

There was buzz that the filmmakers of Mission Impossible are looking at taking your character Brij Nath further in the next installment?
Brad (director Brad Bird) had expressed it, since he was quite impressed with the way the character turned out. But I’m not aware of any development on it. Fingers crossed, though.

Are you looking at more films there?
There are some offers I am considering for sure, but I haven’t signed anything yet apart from Cities.

Your choice of roles in Hollywood found many detractors?
Well, the one thing that I’ve learned here is that more the people laugh at you, the more successful you are. So detractors are always welcome.

You’ve always been rather unconventional in your career choices?
Yes, I have been quite a risk taker. But what seemed unconventional then, has later gone on to become the accepted norm. When I used to sport a stubble back then, I was called a ganda hero, a dirty hero. Today the same stubble is sexy. Just look around, today almost every actor sports one. Eeshwar was an unconventional role, but today you see so many actors do roles like that. Likewise, when I took up Slumdog Millionaire, it was unconventional, because it was not the lead role, but the results are for all to see.

How do you look back on the journey so far?
I’m proud of it. Right from the time I entered the industry, I have done things that I believed in. At a time when all the newcomers were being introduced coming on bikes or horses wearing designer jackets, I came in wearing chappals, a jacket bought for five rupees from a Chor Bazaar and sporting a haircut done by a roadside barber. I came in on my feet, and today I may be seen on global platforms, but my feet are still firmly on the ground.

Will Aamir be the highest paid on TV? Buzz is that the actor is getting Rs. 3 crore for his maiden show on TV

Will Aamir be the highest paid on TV?
Buzz is that the actor is getting Rs. 3 crore for his maiden show on TV

With more Bollywood biggies heading into television, there is a sudden shift in terms of the moolah being offered to them, thereby changing the existing heirarchy of the highest paid. The recent entry of actor Aamir Khan on television has apparently led to a reshuffle as buzz has it that he’s getting paid Rs 3 crore to anchor Satyamev Jayate.
If so, this 3-crore figure not only makes the issue-based show one of the most expensive ones on Indian television, it also puts Aamir ahead of all the other B-Town A-listers on TV, say industry experts. Says an insider, “Aamir getting around 3 crore for his debut TV series comes as no surprise. He’s probably one of the most bankable actors in Bollywood. He brings a lot of creative elements to the table.”
The source adds, “The talk of 3 crore is really nothing. The show is unique and the big budget justifies it. That is the reason it may turn out to be probably one of the most expensive shows in our television history,” the source adds.
Where does that put actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan who’ve created records and set trends on the tube? According to the industry sources, Amitabh apparently got a fee of Rs 2 crore for his stint in Kaun Banega Crorepati 5, while Salman got reportedly around Rs 2 crore for lending his presence to Bigg Boss 5, which he co-hosted along with actor Sanjay Dutt. Actor Hrithik Roshan, apparently received around Rs 1.75 crore when he debuted as the host of a dance reality show Just Dance. Should the Rs 3-crore deal be true, Aamir’s presence might change the heirarchy. But a source warns against jumping the gun. “Aamir may not be that much ahead for long because rumours are doing the rounds about Big B’s return to KBC. It’ll probably up the stakes as the producers are desperate for Amitabh to come back,” he said.

Madhubala started her acting career at the age of nine years, soon after which she gained the reputation as a reliable professional performer of the Film Industry. The striking beauty of the actress was always appreciated by the media, as well as the photographers who craved to take one perfect shot of her beautiful personality.

2. Rekha:  Rekha is also one amongst those personalities who has managed to keep her age at bay. Even at the age of fifty seven Rekha sizzles, in her screen presence in the award functions and the movies. This yester year diva debuted as a child actress in Telugu film Rangula Ratnam, released in the year1966.Rekha was always noted by the Indian audience for her great acting skills for which she is still now an eminent figure of Bollywood. 4. Madhuri Dixit: Although Madhuri is an outstanding actress and a great dancer still she has gained more popularity for her charming personality for which she is still continuing to rule millions of hearts. The Indian media has always compared Madhuri with Madhubala for her great looks. Madhuri has given several box office hits but her acting was quite appreciated in Devdas which was released in the year 2002, after which she retired temporarily from the film industry to concentrate on her family life. In 2007 Madhuri made her come back from the movie Aaja Nachle, although the movie did not do very well at the box office, Madhuri managed to gain appreciation from the Indian audience for her great acting, talent and well maintained looks.

5. Aishwarya Rai: The world also agrees the fact that Aishwarya Rai has the most photogenic face, as she sets the screen ablaze with her great appearance. Aishwarya also got the Miss Photogenic title apart from winning the Miss World crown in the year 1994. But before winning the Miss world title she has already gained prominence in the industry and the nation for the famous Pepsi ad with actor Amir Khan. For this thirty eight year old diva, age seems to be just a number as she manages to look gorgeous in movies as well as in public events and award functions.
