‘I was a reluctant actor’
Actor Poonam Dhillon reveals her reasons for entering the world of theatre much later

Actor Poonam Dhillon has been part of the film industry for many years, and has delved into theatre as well in recent times. Here are excerpts from her chat with us.

How did your new play U Turn come about?
I’ve been wanting to do a role like this, which was a hit Marathi play, and so when the producer approached me, I took it up immediately. Over the years, I’ve not had the courage to get into theatre, but after I did my first play, The Perfect Husband, I couldn’t wait to be on stage again.

Being an actor, what was the apprehension about theatre?
Unlike movies, on stage there are no second chances. Everything is live. If someone messes up, forgets a line, gives the wrong cue, you need to have the presence of mind to move the play along.

Do you feel at this point, that you should have got into theatre sooner?
No, back then we used to shoot 12-14 films at a time, and couldn’t commit time to theatre. I used to be a reluctant actor, but now I am more relaxed and confident and so can use that experience in theatre as well.

You’re doing Prabhudheva’s next film. What’s the character you’re playing?
It’s unlike any role I’ve ever done before. I play the dominating mother who is totally against the girl her son has fallen for. It’s not that she is a negative character, just fiercely clear in her opinion.

While friendships between actors are rare, your friendship with actor Padmini Kolhapure has lasted for years…
With Padmini or other friends the key has always been to prioritise. We grew up together in the industry as teenagers, saw each other get married, have families — we’ve been through the ups and downs together. I value my friendships and go out of my way to commit time and energy to them.

Late actor Smita Patil was a friend too. How do you feel when you see her son Prateik?
I get a lump in my throat whenever I meet him. He’s such a sweet boy — I know that his mother is so proud of her son, watching all the good work he is doing.

Are you also writing a book?
I had started writing, but it’s on hold for now. The last time I spoke about it, it got held up, so now I will only talk about it when it happens.

An ode to Lord Ganesha

An ode to Lord Ganesha

With Ganesh Chaturthi less than a month away, there couldn’t be a more apt time to display art works centered around Lord Ganesha. Artist Kavita Joshi who’s currently displaying a collection of acrylic paintings simply titled Lord Ganesha, explains that she grew up around the area of the Siddhivinayak temple. So when she began painting, she decided to start with this auspicious subject. “My first exhibit in 2007 was done around Ganeshji and though I’ve painted various themes since then, I wanted to go back to my favourite God and subject. This time around the collection features the Lord in different avatars like Mooshakvahan Ganesha, Aishwarya Ganesha, Panchmukhi Ganesha, Shrimant Ganesha, with some abstract and others realistic paintings,” explains Kavita. She says that the Lord guides and energises her everytime she works on a blank canvas. What stands out in her works are the use of vivid hues. “Colours remain the main object in my art work. I’ve used bright and unusual colour combinations to make the images stand out,” she says.

Friendly chemistry
Contrary to reports, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra shared a warm camaraderie on the sets of their upcoming film

There have been a lot of stories doing the rounds about actors Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor not getting along too well on the sets of their upcoming film, Barfi! While sources from the industry had in the past said that the duo maintained a safe distance from each other, close friends from both sides say all is well between the two. A source sets the record straight. “Ranbir and Priyanka have known each other so the comfort level was obviously high. Barfi! is a heartwarming film with a simple story but the characters are very different. Ranbir and Priyanka both had to work on their parts as Ranbir plays a deaf and mute character while Priyanka is autistic in the movie. During difficult scenes, the two were seen helping each other. They were so caught up with their roles that they were spotted discussing how to work on their characters even during the breaks between the shoots.”
If sources close to the actors are to believed, their friendship helped them bring out the best performance. A source from Ranbir’s camp adds, “They both really bonded well while shooting for Anjaana Anjaani. It was shot entirely in Vegas and the duo was away from friends and family for a considerable amount of time. Also PC and RK are both huge gadget freaks. They would spend a lot of time chatting about the gadgets in town. That is how the two bonded and that friendship has reflected in Barfi! as well. Plus, Ranbir really respects Priyanka as an actor. Barfi! has certainly not been an easy film but both of them have been each other’s support system.”
Talking about his equation with Priyanka, Ranbir had earlier said, “There is no cold vibe with Priyanka. She is a fantastic actor and I really admire that about her. Also, the film required us to be in a particular frame of mind due to the characters that we play so we couldn’t be on back-slapping terms. But obviously, that doesn’t mean, we have issues. She is a great girl and good fun to be around.”

‘It’s the best time to be in the industry’ ...says actor Jackie Shroff, who is playing pivotal roles in his upcoming films

‘It’s the best time to be in the industry’
...says actor Jackie Shroff, who is playing pivotal roles in his upcoming films

Actor Jackie Shroff, who has just made his debut in Marathi films with Hridyanath is so happy with the response that he has decided to do at least two films in the language. “People are surprised that I speak Marathi well but I have grown up amongst Maharashtrians and am extremely fluent in the language,” smiles Jackie who saw the film in a theatre with the public. “I rarely go to the theatres, the last one I saw was 1942 – A Love Story,” confesses the actor, who enjoyed the experience.
The actor is now gearing up for his next Hindi release Cover Story, which has him playing a journalist. An amused Jackie says, “After years — from 1992 to be precise — of being interviewed by journos, I myself am essaying one. I have gone with my instincts but there are some scribes who remained etched in my memory and I have drawn inspiration from them,” he reveals. The film has him playing an entertainment journalist who turns investigative when he starts interviewing a female superstar and digs deeper into her past.
The actor is also excited about the sequel of his superhit film Teri Meherbaniyan, which was a touching film about him and his pet dog. The sequel, he says will not take off from the original, in which he had died, but will have a fresh story. The other films in his kitty include Dirty Politics with KC Bokadia and a Yash Raj film. “It’s the best time to be in the industry. I am getting strong roles to portray. Even earlier in my career, I hardly did the song and dance routine, but to get such powerful roles now is great,” says Jackie. He is also looking forward to the film debut of his son Tiger in Sajid Nadiadwala’s film. “Tiger is currently working out, rehearsing and doing all that is required to be an actor. The film will go on the floors in December,” says the papa proudly. What is his advice to his son? “Main khud ko kuch advice nahi de saka, usko kya doonga,” he laughs.

Weighty issues Actor Emraan Hashmi has been oscillating between being lean and bulky for his roles

Weighty issues
Actor Emraan Hashmi has been oscillating between being lean and bulky for his roles

After piling on kilos for Shanghai to get the podgy look, actor Emraan Hashmi had to work out to get six-pack-abs for his role in Jannat 2. Now for his upcoming Ghanchakkar, which he is presently shooting, the actor has two different looks. While one requires him to be muscular and beefed-up, the other one requires him to be lean. The actor had gained muscle and had beefed up but now the director Rajkumar Gupta wants him to lose some of the muscle for his next schedule, which is crucial. The actor plays a conman, who is an expert at breaking locks, in the film. Once that shoot is done, Emraan, who has been oscillating between being lean and bulky, will have to start gaining muscle soon. This time it’s for Karan Johar’s Ungli for which he has to sport a bulky look. Says Emraan, “I have two very distinct looks for Ghanchakkar and Ungli. Simultaneously I am in the middle of promoting Raaz 3, so it’s quite a challenging task, to juggle between the looks without affecting either of the schedules,” says Emraan. ‘Though the constant weight loss and gain is affecting him, the professional that he is, the actor is doing whatever he needs to justify his character the film,” adds a source.

‘Being sexy is new to me’ …says South hottie Ileana D’Cruz; also reveals her plans to shift base to Mumbai

‘Being sexy is new to me’
…says South hottie Ileana D’Cruz; also reveals her plans to shift base to Mumbai

She turned down an offer to star opposite actor Salman Khan in Wanted, which is a remake of her own South film Pokhiri, instead opting to wait for a more challenging role. That role, says South hottie Ileana D’Cruz, came for her in Barfi!, and she insists that it was the only reason why she chose to make her Bollywood debut with an unconventional film of sorts. As we catch up with the actor for a tete-a-tete, Ileana talks about her equation with co-star Ranbir Kapoor and also reveals her plans of shifting base to Mumbai. The excerpts:

Crossing over
Despite her Goan roots, Ileana chose to start her career in films down South. But the actor says that she never looked at South films as a stepping stone to Bollywood. “Forget Bollywood, I didn’t even have films on my radar when I started out. So when those offers came up, I just went with the flow,” she says, adding that it was when she started getting offers here that she considered Bollywood for the first time.

Ranbir over Salman?
About choosing to make her debut here with Barfi! over Wanted, Ileana insists that it was as simple as not wanting to do a role that she had already done. “For me it was not choosing Ranbir Kapoor over Salman Khan, I would love to do a film with Salman, but it was just that I didn’t want to come in Bollywood doing what I had done already,” shares Ileana.

A sweet beginning
“When I think of Bollywood, I think of naach gaana and thought that I would be doing something similar. But Barfi! is far different from anything I have ever done before, so when it came along it was easy to say yes,” says Ileana.

Mumbai calling
Now with the actor training her sights on Bollywood, will it be adieu to South? “No, it will probably take a backseat though as my focus is Bollywood for now. I am thinking of shifting to Mumbai. Nothing is finalised yet, but I am looking out for a house here,” reveals Ileana.

The Link-up factor
Ranbir has been linked with most of his leading ladies, but the actor reveals that it was something that didn’t even cross her mind. “Ranbir is a complete charmer yes, but I think his ‘ladies man’ image is a bit hyped,” laughs Ileana. “He is a fab actor and that’s what we connected more on,” she adds.

Sexy, who me?
“Being sexy is new to me,” laughs Ileana when asked about her hot quotient. “I am in denial about that,” she smiles. On a serious note she adds, “I find it difficult to say where the sexiness lies. But I would be more flattered if a person told that to me after seeing me beyond the make-up, and
after knowing me better personally.”

‘Hrithik spoils you!’ …says filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, as he reveals why he chooses to work with the actor and insists it has nothing to do with him being a doting beta

‘Hrithik spoils you!’
…says filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, as he reveals why he chooses to work with the actor and insists it has nothing to do with him being a doting beta

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan who completes 25 years as a director in the industry this year, reveals that being able to make Krrish 3 — which is actually India’s first real sequel series — has been the best way to celebrate it. “I feel lucky that as a filmmaker I have been able to pursue my dreams for the big screen no matter how big or small. And I am glad that in my journey I have been accompanied by people who really matter,” says the veteran.
The director, who is at present shooting for Krrish 3 with beta actor Hrithik Roshan, will also be celebrating his birthday next month. “Hrithik has already given me a birthday gift with Krrish 3. And though I am every bit a proud dad, I am equally proud as a filmmaker to have directed him, because as an actor Hrithik gives it his all. He is one actor who I have seen eat, breathe, live every moment of the character he plays. Not only for my films but also for others like Agneepath. He gives himself completely to the film and the director. As an actor, Hrithik spoils you completely,” laughs the senior Roshan.
Point out that despite his long innings in the industry, he has stayed off the number game or any campism and Rakesh says that when you are confident of your work, one need not succumb to such pressures. “I think we are a brand on our own and that’s sacrosanct for me. I don’t ever take that for granted because we owe it to our audience. So, they expect a certain cinema from us and we only aim at taking that bar higher. That’s why I prefer to make one film in three years instead of three in one. The film will have it’s own fate at the BO, but there’s no compromise when it comes to the hard work or sincerity in making it from our end,” explains Roshan.
Talking about the progress of Krrish 3, he adds, “I know there are a lot of expectations. That’s why I am not rushing the film. I will wrap the film by November and then give it a year to work on the effects. The film is on such a grand scale that it deserves that time.”

ONLINE WONDERS: DOWNLOAD SONGS FROM VIDEOS

I love to listen to music by unknown artists, and bands, and YouTube is a great platform to access such stuff. Though I love the music, I am not not too much of a fan of videos. To have YouTube playing in the background consumes bandwidth, too. The sad part is that you can't find CDs by such unknown artists in music stores, so how can you collect and store them? Here's how: 1 Fire up www.youtube.com and search for the music you want 2 Once you find a video you like, and would like to keep the music, copy the URL in the address bar — or press the share button and copy the URL. 3 Open www.vidtomp3.com and paste the URL in the box on the site. 4 Click the download button and in a few seconds / minutes (depending on your download speed!) it will offer to download the MP3 file of the video you chose. You can make an MP3s collection of such music. and create your own CD, or even put them on your MP3 player and port your music.

‘Heroine’ wants no anti-smoking message Movie makers are ok to messages before the film starts, but not during the smoking scenes

‘Heroine’ wants no anti-smoking message
Movie makers are ok to messages before the film starts, but not during the smoking scenes

The makers of Bollywood film Heroine, starring Kareena Kapoor, on Monday moved the Delhi high court against the information and broadcasting ministry’s order to display anti-smoking messages during smoking scenes in the movie.
Justice Rajiv Shakdher, hearing the plea, issued notices to I&B and health ministries and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and sought their responses by September 10.
Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, Heroine is scheduled to be released September 21.
The CBFC was also directed to view the movie and file a report in a sealed cover on the next date of hearing.
The film’s producer, UTV Software Communication, approached the court seeking a board certificate for the movie without the conditions related to anti-smoking messages.
The producer also sought the setting aside of the August 2 letter issued to them by the I&B ministry, imposing an additional condition that films that have smoking scenes should start with a 20-second warning on smoking hazards.
The petition said the ministry requested the CBFC to advise the filmmakers to ensure “a 20-second anti-smoking message as approved by the health ministry with voice-over of the actor who is seen smoking in the film to be displayed at the beginning and in the middle (after interval) of the film”.
Another condition imposed on filmmakers was that a static anti-smoking message should be displayed for the duration of the smoking scene in the film.
Having no objection with the 20-second message at the beginning and in the interval of the movie, UTV’s counsel Parag Tripathi and Atul Nanda opposed the proposed static anti-smoking message during a scene.
“It would kill the creativity of the scene,” the film producer said.

For those luscious locks… Actor Nargis Fakhri reveals some tips on maintaining voluminous and frizz-free hair during the rainy season

For those luscious locks…
Actor Nargis Fakhri reveals some tips on maintaining voluminous and frizz-free hair during the rainy season

During the monsoon, your hair behaves differently due to the increased humidity, and a proper monsoon hair care regime is needed to nourish your locks from within. Being in my profession, I ensure I follow an effective hair care regime that can combat the excess moisture in the air and keep my hair smooth and manageable 24x7. Drinking adequate water, a healthy diet, enough sleep and regular oil massage works wonders.
A 20-minute deep conditioning massage with a coconut-based hair oil is something I religiously follow. Hair oil deeply penetrates your scalp and conditions your hair, protecting it against the frizz and keeping the hair thick. After washing my hair, I pat it dry with a towel, and use a soft hair brush or a wide-toothed comb and ensure my hair isn’t treated harshly. I’m also careful not to tie my hair very tightly, as this can cause breakage and roughness.
It’s best to keep your hair styles as simple as possible, maybe tie the hair in a sleek ponytail or a bun, as they are the easiest to maintain in the humid weather. Avoid fancier hairstyles or a blow-dry that requires much heat and products, that can further damage the mane.
A good diet that includes three portions of fruit and vegetables gives me my share of antioxidants to keep my hair healthy. Also, protein-enriched foods such as milk, yoghurt and sprouts provide essential nourishment. Sipping on healthy drinks like coconut water will keep your system hydrated and refreshed, making sure the hair is healthy.

Kate Moss gearing for another baby

Kate Moss gearing for another baby

Kate Moss, who is known to start her day with three ice-cold beers and half a packet of cigarettes, is now turning her thoughts increasingly to motherhood, her friend has claimed.
The 38-year-old model, who has not had a glass of champagne in sight for days, has been married to The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince for 13 months.
“Kate has made it no secret among her circle that she’d love to have a baby with Jamie,” a news portal quoted a long-standing pal as saying.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that the prospect of another child is a massive motivation for her to clean up her act. She eats like a horse now, too, while back in her catwalk days she could easily “forget” to have lunch and dinner. And Jamie worships the ground she walks on, so to have the kind of bond that comes from parenthood would mean the world to him.”
Moss’s new approach to holiday behaviour that she demonstrated in France indicates changed priorities. While once she might not have risen until late afternoon, this summer there have been laughter-filled lunches at a glamorous beachfront restaurant with Lila Grace, her nine-year-old daughter and friends.

Ang Lee’s India-bound in October?

Ang Lee’s India-bound in October?

Frantic preparations are apparently underway by a Hollywood studio to host Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (of Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame) in India. Earlier we had reported how the filmmmaker plans to visit India in the later half of the year. Now, there’s buzz that Lee — whose magnum opus Life of Pi based on Yann Martel’s Booker prize winning novel by the same name is set for a November release here — hopes to have the entire cast and crew together for the promotional events right here in the last week of October. “Usually, Hollywood studios have promotional activities planned around in the US and other South Asian countries, but for Life of Pi, they seem to be keen to focus on India-centric promotions, keeping in mind the Indian flavour of the film,” says a source. “Besides Lee himself was keen to come to India again, so talks are on to make it possible,” the source adds. And as part of these promotions, the entire cast and crew including Hollywood actors Tobey Maguire, Gerard Depardieu and Indian actors Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Suraj Sharma, Adil Hussain are expected to come together as well. The 3D adventure film that has been extensively shot in Puducherry was already being touted as a possible Oscar contender, when an early footage of the film was screened in Los Angeles.

‘India is no stranger to global luxury’
International fashion designer Amit GT, who’s dressed up Holly celebs like Eva Longoria, Rosario Dawson, is all set to launch his first store in India

Having established his name across Europe, Dubai and the Far East, desi designer Amit GT is back “home” anxious to open his first store in Gurgaon next month, followed by more stores in New Delhi and Mumbai. “I had shown my collection mostly in Paris, Milan and other European cities and not often in India (except for the Delhi fashion week) as Europe attracts buyers, media and industry stalwarts from across the globe. We always planned on promoting the brand globally, so it made sense to show at a place which is a melting pot for the who’s who of fashion,” explains the designer, adding, “India is no more a stranger to global luxury today and now has a large disposable income to consume such fashion. It is actually the best time to do luxury in India.” Despite his Indian roots, Amit refers to himself as culture-agnostic, saying that he prefers to incorporate inspiration from different cultures.
His designs have been flaunted by a number of Hollywood beauties in the last few months such as actors Eva Longoria, Whitney Cummings, Alicia Minshew and Kate Mansi as well as Daisy Fuentes. Recently Zookeeper actor Rosario Dawson, wore an animal print dress designed by Amit, for a magazine spread. And it’s not just the West, but Bolly babes like Jacqueline Fernandez, Shazahn Padamsee and Shahana Goswami too have worn his designs. “Actors Sonam Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut carry off dresses really well. They’d look great in A-line knee-length dresses,” he adds.
Amit is also currently prepping for his show next month at the Vienna Fashion Week. About breaking into the international scene, he says, “It was not a piece of cake.” And will we see him in the Indian fashion weeks sometime soon? “India does a pretty good job in terms of organising fashion weeks. The biggest difference is the number of buyers who attend these in the fashion capitals of the world, which is much higher than the numbers here. But that will only change once India becomes a fashion capital,” says Amit.

Decoding the Indian curry! Much has been written about Holly hottie Tom Cruise trippin’ on spicy Indian curry lately. For those wondering about the gravy, city chefs help crack the curry code

Decoding the Indian curry!
Much has been written about Holly hottie Tom Cruise trippin’ on spicy Indian curry lately. For those wondering about the gravy, city chefs help crack the curry code

For years, you’ve heard of the zillion restaurants serving the Indian curry abroad, and the ever-vocal international glamazons raving about it. And now you’re hearing it again with Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise who recently stopped over at a local Indian restaurant in St Albans to relish the omnipresent ‘curry’! But ask any Indian out here, and they’ll be confused about which gravy they’re referring to in their endless epicurean reservoir. So, what exactly is this ‘Indian curry’?
For an average foreigner, the Indian curry is equal to a thick tomato and onion gravy, deciphers chef Paul Kinny of InterContinental Marine Drive. “Though flavoursome, it is modified to suit the palate of the Westerners which means less of spices. In fact, the curry served in most Indian restaurants abroad is more like a sauce, and it’s either chicken or lamb curry, not mutton,” continues chef Paul, adding that it is the vibrant Indian flavours that lures people to the ‘Indian curries’. “When a foreigner prepares a sauce, all it’s likely to have is mustard and cheese. But if you are to prepare it the Indian way, you’re sure to have a burst of flavours from the presence of numerous spices and masalas.” Resonating the thought, Chef Surjan Singh Jolly of Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel explains, “Our curries are a big hit abroad because they offer a variety of flavours — spicy, tangy, sweet, sour. Moreover, each curry can be altered to suit one’s preference when it comes to spices and the masalas.”
From the many curry options available abroad, it is the Butter Chicken that wins hands down, and remains an all-time favourite for most. Says sous chef Anuj Agarwal of Canvas Lounge, “Each curry has its own flavour... The taste and texture of it cannot be compared to any bland Western dish.”

Not without his heroines! Apparently, actor Ranbir Kapoor is insistent that his co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz be given equal importance in promotions of their upcoming film

Not without his heroines!
Apparently, actor Ranbir Kapoor is insistent that his co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz be given equal importance in promotions of their upcoming film

Actor Ranbir Kapoor, who is busy wrapping up the Paris shoot schedule of his Ayan Mukherjee film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and is awaiting to begin the promotions of his upcoming film Barfi!, has apparently put forth a request to the filmmakers. According to a source, the young star wants his co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz to be given equal importance in the promotions and is insistent that the three of them promote the film together. “Ranbir feels that the film is pure team work and all the three of them are equally important. So, he’s requested the production house to make sure that all the three of them are seen equally,” says the source.
Another industry insider points out that it is unusual to see a hero ask that his heroines be given equal footage in terms of promotions. “Ranbir acknowledges that Priyanka is as big a name as he is and respects that. He doesn’t want it to seem like he is taking credit for the positive response the film’s promos have been garnering, so he wants Ileana and PC to be there as well,” adds another source.
Meanwhile, Priyanka herself has been getting a lot of praise for her role in the film, even though the promos barely show her for a few minutes. “She catches the eye, even if she is on screen for a few minutes. And there’s more curiosity about her character at present as well,” says a trade observer. “Ileana is also a credited actor down South while Ranbir is one of the finest we have in young talent. So to have all the three together will definitely be a treat for fans,” the observer adds.

Sridevi’s gift to her daughters
The actor wanted to make up for being in the US for two months, shooting for her upcoming film

When Sridevi was shooting in the US for her upcoming film English Vinglish, it was the first time that she couldn’t take her daughters along. It’s a known fact that Sridevi is extremely close to her daughters and she can’t afford to leave them alone even for a minute. So much so, that the pretty actor makes it a point to take them with her wherever she goes. Take any award function or fashion show, Sridevi is always seen with her daughters.
However, the one time she had to leave them behind was during the shoot, that too because of her hectic schedule, which was out of the country. Says a source, “Sridevi was feeling very guilty about leaving her daughters behind, so she made up for it by getting two puppies for her daughters as a small gift.”
English Vinglish directed by debutant director Gauri Shinde marks the comeback of Sridevi after a 14-year sabbatical and has her playing a homemaker who enrolls for an English speaking course. The film is being screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

No compromises! Actor Priyanka Chopra cancelled all other commitments just to dub for her upcoming film

 No compromises!

Actor Priyanka Chopra cancelled all other commitments just to dub for her upcoming film

Despite being one of the busiest actors, Priyanka Chopra is extremely professional when it comes to her work. So much so that she tries her best to see to it that all the small details in terms of filmmaking are also perfect. During the post-production of her upcoming film Barfi!, Priyanka gave all her time to simply dub for the film.
A source reveals, “Priyanka is a hardworking woman. And when it comes to her film she is sensitive and likes to stay involved in all the details. Even when the post-production of Barfi! was going on, she cancelled all her other projects and commitments just to dub for the film. It may sound a little weird but it’s true. Priyanka believes that dubbing is very important and not doing it well would affect the film. Her belief is so strong that she doesn’t mind giving less time for promotions, but she doesn’t compromise on the time for dubbing.”
Priyanka’s character in the film, which goes through a massive transformation in terms of looks and mannerisms, is difficult and challenging to portray. So she had to take extra care when it came to dubbing and spent a lot of time for it. She wanted to make sure the gravity and tone of her voice matches that of her character’s which is why she put in special efforts for dubbing. She even spent an ample amount of time practicing before she started dubbing. “Priyanka in real life also has gone for a complete no make-up look, so that her character’s autistic look in the film appears real and natural. She needs things to be perfect, then only she moves on to other projects,” the source further adds.

…reveals actor Randeep Hooda; talks about not wanting to get only slotted in sex-driven roles

Actor Randeep Hooda, who has been voted among the sexiest men on a reputed international film website, maintains that he’s never taken such tags seriously. It’s no different now when the actor’s being as much- talked-about for his sex quotient in a film like Jism 2 as his performance in Jannat 2. “I want people to know me for my body of work, than just my body,” says Randeep, explaining why he would not want to be slotted in any particular image. “Being sexy can always just be an added advantage, not the be-all and end-all for an actor,” he insists.
Randeep reveals that his criteria are performance-oriented roles and not the length or genre. “If the character is well-etched you automatically get the scope to perform, so whether it’s five minutes, 15 or 50, you can make the most of it,” he adds.
From almost being the side-kick to actor Emraan Hashmi in the promotions of Jannat 2, to now being the lead hero in several of the Bhatt productions including Murder 3 where he has replaced Emraan in the third installment, Randeep must be feeling a sense of achievement. But the actor denies it. “The real achievement is to do justice to the character and not bag banners or big films. It is always a dream to get interesting films and do certain kind of roles, but it has nothing to do with replacing any other actor.”
Meanwhile, the actor who is currently shooting for Murder 3 in South Africa plans to wrap up the schedule and return home in the first week of September. “Yes, I hope to return by September 6. Right after that I will be busy again with John Day and Shooter,” shares Randeep.

Simply too sweet a ‘fare’! Review of Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi

 Simply too sweet a ‘fare’!

Name: Farhad Pastakiya
Age: 45
Business: Bra and panty salesman at Tem Tems

It’s this last line in Farhad’s (Boman) bio-data for matrimony purposes that seems to get him rejected every time. The result? As one of his customers points out, ‘from an eligible bachelor, you have become the most reliable bachelor’. Living with his dominating mother (Daisy) and a lovable granny (Shammiji) at 45, he is the softie who everyone wants to take a lick of, for humour of course! Things finally look up and cupid strikes when a phatakdi of sorts, Shirin Fugawala enters his life. But alas, she is disliked by the mummy for more reasons than one, and so the love story finds its villain and also cause for added melodrama.
The film remains a breezy affair throughout, but Boman infuses so much life and energy into his character that you find youself drawn into his world. Farah looks too casual for most parts and in some others she gives it a college play kind of a feel, but overall, does manage to keep up with Boman’s comic timing. The chemistry gets a thumbs up. For a first timer, Bela does a fairly good job, though she does fall prey to stereotyping of characters when entering the domain of Parsi characters. There are characters you have grown to expect in Parsi comic capers and this one has its share too, like a near eccentric gun-wielding Bawa, and an equally crazy uncle who wants to marry Indira Gandhi!
Also, there really are scenes that could’ve been done away with completely like the fracas in the society meeting and also there was just no need to resort to toilet humour. Some twists are rather cliched too. The music is strictly an added though it does lend a comical touch. Also, many actors like Kurush Deboo, Nauheed Cyrusi… seem wasted in their bit roles.
But these hiccups apart, the film has some beautiful and cute moments like the one Boman shares with his granny (Shammiji is as endearing as ever) and then some hilarious ones like Farah’s first lunch with the would-be-in-laws. The story does makes one wonder if Sanjay Leela Bhansali purposely wanted his sister to make her directorial debut with a sweet and simple story that doesn’t have much scope to go wrong especially with a strong actor like Boman. Overall, too sweet and too simple, but makes for a fun watch. So catch Farhad-Shirin’s love story, Boman-Farah make it worth a watch.

Brook insisted on underwear scene in film

Brook insisted on underwear scene in film

Actor Kelly Brook says when she read the script of Keith Lemon: The Film and realised there were no scenes requiring her to strip, she insisted at least one such scene was added. The 32-year-old star was surprised at the omission of any revealing scene as she believes she is most famous for appearing in her underwear, reports thesun.co.uk.
“I got the script — but there was no part where I was in underwear. There was nothing remotely like that,” said Brook. Now there is a scene in the film, in which she plays herself, where Brook walks down a corridor in only her lingerie.

Look who’s back!
Saifeena were spotted returning to the city after a long holiday

Actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are back in town after their romantic getaway. They were spotted coming out of the international airport on Thursday night. While Saif was dressed casually — blue cap, denim and white tee, Bebo was attired in a black outfit with a flower-patterned shawl wrapped around her. The couple seemed to be in a hurry to leave the airport as they got into their waiting car. The couple took off to London to celebrate Saif’s birthday there. They apparently wanted to get away from the constant speculation surrounding their impending marriage. The celebrations didn’t just end in London. They then flew to New York, where Saif attended the India Independence parade. Also present at the 32nd India Day Parade was cricket legend Anil Kumble. However, now that the couple is back in town, it’s time for another round of speculation to begin on their wedding date and venue.

‘Not quitting South!’ …says actor Shruti Haasan, clarifying that despite having moved to the city and signed Bollywood films, it’s not adieu to her films down South

‘Not quitting South!’

…says actor Shruti Haasan, clarifying that despite having moved to the city and signed Bollywood films, it’s not adieu to her films down South

There was a time, not too long ago, when actor Shruti Haasan was waiting for the right scripts in Bollywood. Cut to today, the actor has gotten so busy with her film here that she barely has time for anything else. The actor, who recently shifted base to Mumbai with plans to pursue Bollywood more seriously, after a rather successful stint down South, recently began shooting for the yet-to-be-titled Prabhudheva film that also marks the debut of Girish Taurani. And the actor reveals that she is maha-excited to be working with the ace director, who she’s grown up watching. “I’ve looked up to Prabhudheva since I was a kid. Unfortunately I’ve never had the opportunity to work with him. So it’s great to finally be working with him in a Bollywood movie after all these years of Chennai connection. I’m glad he thought I could play the part after seeing all my work in the south,” shares Shruti.
The actor has apparently been shooting for the songs first. Though she hasn’t sung them, Shruti reveals that she is enjoying the dancing part immensely. “I have always enjoyed the dance and song sequence of our films. I think that’s a huge part of the attraction,” she adds. Meanwhile, the actor admits that the hectic shoots leave her little time for her music, but she does manage to squeeze in some time. “It’s a hectic schedule, but I love the busy me. Whenever I get the time in between, I’m also looking into my music,” adds Shruti.
But work apart, we ask the actor about her personal life and the actor says that work’s taken over the personal space completely. “Right now, I’m sort of focussing on my films. I am busy here at present, but I’m not giving up films down South, so I’m reading scripts and keeping busy with work in both Bollywood and in the South,” she says. As for rumours of her quitting South industry, she adds, “No way. I am not quitting or giving up my films down South. It’s ridiculous to divide industries for actors. I think it’s the scripts that drive us, not languages, so I don’t see why it has to be this or that and not both?” she quips.

Telly shades of grey The quintessential good boy of television is making way for an edgy hero with dark sides to his character

Telly shades of grey
The quintessential good boy of television is making way for an edgy hero with dark sides to his character

Madhubala

Ruk Jaana Nahin

Amrit Manthan

Rab Se Sonah Isshq
Saubhagyavati Bhava

His character leans towards the darker side, he is edgy, mostly a non-conformist and exudes a raw sex appeal. No, he neither belongs to some Gothic novel nor is he the central character of a romantic best-seller. You will find this tall, ‘dark’, edgy hero playing out currently in a television show. Take RK the arrogant superstar of Madhubala, who hates the heroine but marries her just to take revenge, Indu Singh of Ruk Jaana Nahi who plays the rascal with relish, the edgy Kunal Chopra in Parichay, who is currently drowning his miseries in alcohol, the rowdy and rustic Krishna of Pratigya, the overpossessive and abusive husband Viraj of Saubhagyavati Bhava and last, but not the least, Ranveer, the rake of Rab Se Sonah Isshq, who has ditched his lover at the altar to follow his London dreams.
Hemal Thakkar, producer of Ruk Jaana Nahin says, “Heroes with grey shades give a very interesting and mystic feel to the story, women love the brooding man with secrets and a little violent streak. I suppose it started with our Laagi Tujhse Lagan in which Datta Bhau (he was a gangster) was a much-loved character. I had women sending me emails and messages saying how they were in love with him.”
Vivian Dsena justifies his flawed personality as RK in Madhubala saying heroes are human too. "Being grey is human. People relate to my character as they like realistic characters." That in fact, is the crux of the story. With stories becoming real, the line between protagonist and antagonist is blurring.
Says Sukesh Motwani, head —fiction programming, head, Zee, “Television has come of age with realistic portrayals of the protagonists of our shows. Our hero is no longer the quintessential good boy, ideal son or husband nor is the leading lady a self-sacrificing holier-than-thou damsel-in-distress. Ranveer in Rab Se... deserts the love of his life on the wedding day and goes to London. Saahiba, the girl sells all the jewellery set aside by her parents and uses the money to fly to London in search of Ranveer. This is the youth of today and if our protagonists do not reflect contemporary attitudes, they will fail to strike a chord with the audience.”
Lending credence to this statement is Amrit Manthan, which probably is the only serial that has the heroine Amrit (Adaa Khan) in an ambitious avatar with no qualms seducing or killing to achieve her means. Says producer Rajan Shahi, “Not just the goodness, people identify with the dark shades of a character too. Amrit’s greed for money and power is something which the youth relate to.”
Not surprising then, that if good guys are good, bad guys are better!

Riya’s brush with Angelina-Cage!

Riya’s brush with Angelina-Cage!

Actor Riya Sen had quite a fan moment recently when she came face-to-face with Holly hottie Angelina Jolie and actor Nicolas Cage. The actor who had just returned from a trip to Bangkok with her sister actor Raima Sen and girl gang had enrolled herself for an acting workshop in London. Says a source, “Riya was attending an acting workshop at the famed ‘actor’s studio’ in London at Pinewood Studios which was being conducted by director and coach Baz Taylor and acting agent Tim Kent. She was visibly excited about being in Pinewood studios, which is one of the oldest studios and more so since most of the James Bond films have been shot there, and she’s a huge Bond fan.” The source adds that it was while there that she caught Angelina Jolie and Nicolas Cage shooting. “She was rather happy to witness them shoot live as they both are actors that she admires. She said that she would always cherish the moment,” the source added.

Theatre calling! Actor Saurabh Shukla makes a comeback on stage after 18 years, with a Hinglish comedy

Theatre calling!
Actor Saurabh Shukla makes a comeback on stage after 18 years, with a Hinglish comedy

After an 18-year-long hiatus, actor Saurabh Shukla has returned to stage with a comedy play titled Two to Tango, Three to Jive. Directed by Saurabh himself, the play also stars actors Nigaar Khan, Mona Wasu and Preiti Mamgain, with him, and is a humorous spin on midlife crisis.
While the Hinglish lines provide entertainment, the play has a meaningful theme. It has Saurabh playing Parminder Sethi, a restaurant owner in Delhi, who leads a monotonous life and considers turning things around. The play chronicles his journey with practical, comic, confusing and at times passionate moments. “He lives a mundane life where money is not a problem. And the fact that there’s no problem in his life gets him worrying and creates a crisis,” explains the actor, adding, “So the play talks about the midlife crisis – of a man with three women – Shomali (Nigaar), Rinky (Mona) and Savita (Preiti). He is desperately trying to get into a legitimate relationship. Though the play is outright funny and has mass appeal, I’d say that it dishes out a real life picture.”
So what kept Saurabh away from theatre for so long? “I started with theatre, and I did it extensively in New Delhi. But then I came to Mumbai and films occupied most of my time. There was no space left for theatre,” he says. “So it almost took me 18 years to come back. But in these many years, I have been craving to come back and perform. In between, I did a translation for the play Bombay Black.” And considering that Two to Tango... was Saurabh’s comeback, the actor-director asserts that he made sure he did it with a “meaningful play”. He says, “I’ve always been interested in real things. I didn’t want to do a shallow play. Even if it’s a comedy, I prefer to create a real world over a fantasy one.”

‘I’ve always been the controversy queen’ …admits producer Ekta Kapoor as she talks about her run-ins with censors; also talks about competition among fellow filmmakers and her take on marriage

‘I’ve always been the controversy queen’
…admits producer Ekta Kapoor as she talks about her run-ins with censors; also talks about competition among fellow filmmakers and her take on marriage

Till a few years back, producer Ekta Kapoor was hailed as the undisputed soap queen of the small screen. Cut to now, thanks to her run-ins with the censor board of late, she now seems to have become the ‘controversy queen’ of the big screen! But Ekta insists that she’s always been that. “By now I’m pretty used to being dragged in one panga after another. My films like The Dirty Picture or Kya Super Kool Hain Hum facing censor trouble or other such issues may be new, but I have been courting trouble right from the time I set foot in the industry,” she says referring to the flak she faced when changing gears on the small screen to shift focus onto saas-bahu sagas and kitchen politics. “I was accused about being regressive back then and God only knows what not. In fact, what I face today is nothing in comparison. It’s far lesser now. But you choose what you do and I choose to walk my way. The success of these films only reinforces my faith,” explains the producer as we catch up with her for a quick chat. Here Ekta also reveals her fears and talks about marriage…

Your films seem to be getting higher on sexual content. Sex sells?
No it’s not just about that. Both my recent films are what I would call sexually liberating, though each in its own way. And it’s nothing that we don’t see around us. It’s just that we’ve put it out on screen. We all laugh on adult and naughty jokes in real life, so why not laugh with onscreen characters?

You are one of the strongest players in Bollywood today, what’s your take on competition?
I think it’s fabulous and very healthy, the way it is at present. I mean we are competitors when it comes to business, but we are also friends. So we are supportive of each other and rooting for our films. We are more like allies than foes and definitely very respectful about each others work. I think the admiration comes out of respect. And personally you are not looking at beating the other filmmaker, but trying to better your own film, so it’s positive.

Is there anything you fear?
I am paranoid and damn scared on the day my film’s release. I had thought by the time I am few films old, the fear would subside. But n, I still get nervous.

Now that you have lost oodles of weight and looking rather fab yourself, how about acting?
No way. I am so not an actor! I can’t face the camera, I start laughing the minute I do.

Direction?
Not for now. I don’t want to take that much on my platter.

What about marriage? Isn’t there family pressure?
Well, I don’t know if my family’s talking about it. I am so busy that I hardly get to talk to them. So, I have no clue if they discuss my marriage. As for me, like I said, where is the time, yaar?`

Mallika keeps her date with Banderas
Buzz is that the Bolly hottie vacationed with Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas; is also apparently on the verge of signing another international project
Actor Mallika Sherawat is currently busy shuttling between Mumbai and LA. Though she needs to promote her film Kismat Love Paisa Dilli here, a recent development has required her to go back to LA. Buzz is that the actor is all set to sign her next Hollywood film with a prominent production house there, and this comes right on the heels of her secret holiday in Paris with Holly hottie Antonio Banderas!
The actor is on a personal high right now as she gears up to secure her next Hollywood film project. With her Hindi film opposite actor Vivek Oberoi already making quite a buzz, Mallika is focusing right now on sealing the international deal. Says a source close to Mallika,“Yes, Mallika is right now in LA figuring out the details with producers. She is on the verge of signing her next Holly flick after Jackie Chan’s adventure drama The Myth and Politics of Love with actor Brian J White. Everything is ready, she just needs to sign on the dotted line and then she will make the announcements. But she won’t be able to reveal much details as her contract with the production house will prevent her from doing so. It is a big budget film that she is really excited about.”
Before coming to LA, the actor had apparently taken a small break, which was a trip to Paris! It came after a lot was written about her closeness with Antonio, and the resulting problem in his marriage with his wife Melanie Griffith. But this recent trip was an invitation by Antonio to join him for a private holiday in Paris. “Mallika before heading to LA went to Paris and visited Antonio. They had a nice holiday together there. But both are keeping it low key, because of all the news that was circulating. She had a great time, but she will talk only when she feels comfortable. Actually she is even looking forward to meeting him again soon. But for now, all she wants is her next Holly outingto be taken care of,” the source further adds.

Stalker alert! Actor Emraan Hashmi has a female stalker, who has been following him for the past three years

Stalker alert!
Actor Emraan Hashmi has a female stalker, who has been following him for the past three years

Most actors have crazy fans who mostly send them letters, pictures, postcards and the works. But actor Emraan Hashmi has a fan, who does much more than just that. Emraan who is quite popular with women has had crazy fans writing letters to him, landing up at his doorstep, but this one particular woman is so besotted by him that she
apparently lands up wherever the actor is.
A source close to the actor reveals, “Emraan is very popular with females and is quite used to the attention. Also, he is not the sort who refuses to pose for a picture or sign an autograph for his fans. He knows that he is what he is because of his fans so he is very particular about the way he interacts with them. He always obliges his female fans when they ask him to pose for pictures. Over the past couple of years, he has had many of them landing up at his doorstep but this particular female stalker is obsessed with him. She has been following him for close to three years now and just refuses to give up. She lands up at all his shoots and public appearances. The most recent one being at a dahi handi event in Worli. When she realised that Emraan was going to make an appearance at the event, she reached the venue at eight in the morning when he was scheduled to arrive in the evening. She even tried barging into the security cauldron and dashed towards his car when he arrived.”
The same girl has also apparently been spotted at various events in the past couple of months. She was seen recently at a suburban multiplex, posing as a journalist so she could meet him while he was promoting his upcoming film.

Films starring actors Kareena Kapoor and Sridevi, which were scheduled to release on the same day now have different release dates

Bebo is the heroine!
Films starring actors Kareena Kapoor and Sridevi, which were scheduled to release on the same day now have different release dates

After going back and forth, actor Sridevi’s comeback film English Vinglish has been postponed from the original release date of September 21. While the producers of the film were very particular about releasing the film on September 21 and had locked in the date much in advance, it was clashing with actor Kareena Kapoor’s much-talked about Heroine. The glitch here was that Madhur was refusing to budge from the release date because he had very early on announced that his film would release on that date which happens to be Kareena’s birthday.
A source from the industry reveals, “Both parties were unhappy with their films clashing at the box-office but neither was willing to shift the dates because other slots in September were already taken by other big films. Also this year, September is special because it has most women-oriented films releasing, so both producers did not want to let go of the perfect period. Even the fact that the business of both the films would be affected did not make a difference. Finally, after taking into consideration the entire situation, English Vinglish has been pushed to October 5.”
According to the trade, Eros, the producers of Sridevi’s film did not want to take any chances because this is being touted as Sri’s comeback film. A lot of her fans are awaiting its release and so decided to finally let Heroine release on September 21 and pushed the date to October 5. The decision was apparently arrived at after a meeting earlier this week attended by the producers, director Gauri Shinde who is filmmaker R Balki’s wife and Boney Kapoor. A source close to Eros, however, says that the film has been pushed because the company did not want two of their releases — the other one being Chakravyuh in the same month. Chakravyuh releases on September 12. Meanwhile, another source reveals that the film has been postponed because some portions are yet to be completed.

I’ll not quit dancing ...says actor Esha Deol, a trained Odissi dancer

I’ll not quit dancing
...says actor Esha Deol, a trained Odissi dancer

Esha Deol is hardly seen on the big screen, but the recently-married actor, a trained Odissi dancer, says she will never quit dance.
“It’s (dance) a convention passed on to me and Ahana (sister) by maa (Hema Malini) and I will continue doing it. Dance is something that I am never going to quit,” the 31-year-old said.
Esha, who tied the knot with her businessman beau Bharat Takhtani on June 29, was present at a Dahi-Handi celebration for Krishna Janmashtami. She performed Manglacharan, a popular style of Odissi, at the event.
So far, the actress had only performed the dance style with her mother Hema Malini and sister Ahana, but she delivered a solo performance this time.
Esha, a lord Krishna devotee, was more ecstatic as she got a chance to perform on the God’s birthday. “Since childhood, I have been a true devotee of lord Krishna. We (Bharat and I) even got married in Krishna’s mandir (temple), so maybe it was his (lord Krishna’s) call that I come and perform over here,” she said.
On the big screen, Esha was last seen in Tell Me O Kkhuda, directed by her mother. It was flagged as Esha’s comeback film, but it failed to click at the box office.

Hooked to animation! Actor Sonal Chauhan has become obsessed with animated movies

Hooked to animation!
Actor Sonal Chauhan has become obsessed with animated movies

Actor Sonal Chauhan is gearing up for the release of her upcoming thriller 3G. The actor recently returned after one-and-a-half month shooting scehdule in Fiji. Her trip has managed to change Sonal’s taste in terms of cinema. Sonal, who never used to like animated movies before, has become a die-hard fan of them. And now her new found fondness has slowly turned into obsession.
A source tells us, “Sonal is a movie buff but she never used to enjoy animation or animated movies as such. While shooting at Fiji for her upcoming film she developed an avid interest in that genre of films. This recent shift came about because of co-star Neil Nitin Mukesh and other crew members. Some of them took several DVDs of animated movies like The Lion King, Monster House, Finding Nemo, Madagascar, Ice Age and Toy Story series. Once she started seeing the films, she simply couldn’t stop. They used to have animated movie marathons there and she used to watch them all. Her favorite is Finding Nemo.”

Director Kabir Khan talks about working with actor Salman Khan, his journey so far and future plans Continuing our section which gets into the filmmaker’s mind

‘I am re-introducing a superstar’
Director Kabir Khan talks about working with actor Salman Khan, his journey so far and future plans
Continuing our section which gets into the filmmaker’s mind

A documentary filmmaker, Kabir Khan made his directorial debut with Kabul Express that chronicled his experiences in the strife-torn Afghanistan. His next outing New York set against the backdrop of the 9/11 spoke of prejudices against certain religions after the tragedy. His latest and most amibitious film Ek Tha Tiger is a romantic thriller woven around a secret agent. The greatest thrill says Kabir, is re-introducing superstar Salman Khan in a raw, rugged, edgy avatar never seen before...
Ek Tha Tiger is your most ambitious film. What are your expectations?
In terms of scale and magnitude, it is the most expensive film shot across three continents and five countries with the biggest stars in the Indian industry. It is definitely a very ambitious film. The narrative is of a fast-paced thriller but it is a passionate love story. I am happy with the way the film has shaped up despite all the logistical issues. People are reacting very well to the teasers and I am very confident of the film.

There were reports that Salman interfered in the filmmaking process and his erratic timings affected the shoot...
If that was true, we wouldn’t have finished the film on time. Salman has a certain style of functioning, so it was a matter of intelligent scheduling and working around it. As for interference, let me tell you that as a filmmaker I enjoy suggestions and contributions from everybody including my junior ADs (assistant directors). If the lead actor does not give suggestions, it means he is either brain dead or not interested in your film. I am not a creatively pompous director. I have taken suggestions from all my actors including Katrina (Kaif) and Girish Karnad. The good thing about Salman was that even though he gave suggestions, he never forced them. There’s no ego in the man. Whatever he does, it does not come from a position of power.

From making documentaries to directing the biggest stars, you have come a long way...
Yes, and it’s been a very enjoyable process. I loved making documentaries and will someday get back to it as I have certain ideas. Of course, my first film Kabul Express will always be special because it was auto-biographical. Then with New York, I went mainstream with a very real political context, going against a lot of conventional wisdom that said you should not do this. However, the super-success of the film enabled my producer to give me as big a platform as I want for my next film Ek Tha Tiger. It’s been a rewarding experience and I have grown with each film.

What next?
I haven’t really thought about it. I am too focussed on Ek Tha Tiger right now. But I have a script ready with me. In fact, it is the first script that I had written but since it is an ambitious project, I had kept it on the backburner. I needed to reach a certain stature before producers could back that vision of mine. Also, Bollywood itself has undergone a lot of changes since Kabul Express happened. There is space for both true blue Bollywood films as well as alternative storytelling in new voices.

While Mumbai fashion week lacked Bollywood glamour, Delhi couture week was high on star power with Katrina Kaif, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Sharmila Tagore taking to the ramp

Is Mumbai fashion losing its stars to Delhi?
While Mumbai fashion week lacked Bollywood glamour, Delhi couture week was high on star power with Katrina Kaif, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Sharmila Tagore taking to the ramp

The Delhi Couture Week which ended yesterday, saw a number of big names either making front-row appearances or as showstoppers for various designers. The five-day long event in the Capital, scored high on the glamour quotient, a sharp contrast to the Mumbai fashion week. While Mumbai may be the centre of B-Town activity, except for actor Kareena Kapoor, showstoppers for the other shows failed to impress with their star quotient. It left the glamouratti wondering about the reason behind the dismal attendance by Mumbai’s swish set. Some felt this could be due to the fact that the city-based fashion week this time had younger designers, instead of the usual veterans.

Designer Manish Malhotra, who chose to show in New Delhi over Mumbai, said couture is about the razzmatazz. “To me, couture is all about stars and glamour. My show’s high on grandeur with elaborate sets and actor Katrina Kaif as showstopper. Such collections call for all that,” he said.
Dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit-Nene dazzled on the ramp in an ornate lehenga choli, walking as showstopper for designer Anju Modi. It was her debut on the fashion ramp. Actor Sharmila Tagore too was spotted on the ramp for designer Ashima-Leena. This was the second time she was walking for the duo. Leena said, “We never believed in getting stars for our shows. It’s just that we felt Sharmila completed the theme of our collection, and we did not select her due to her celebrity status. If your clothes are stars and you have enough faith in them, you don’t need showstoppers.” Actors like Shabana Azmi and Sonam Kapoor were also seen in the capital attending select shows.
Finale designer Sabyasachi says he doesn’t believe in using showstoppers for a show. “Actor Sridevi came as a guest, as I have done the costumes for her forthcoming film. The biggest consumer of couture is the wedding market in India. I consider myself one of the key players in the wedding business and so showcasing in New Delhi translates to pure business for me,” he added.

Bollywood’s most loved onscreen jodi SRK-Kajol has competition from male hotties — John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan. Buzz is that filmmakers are making a beeline to cast the two in their films

While the onscreen chemistry that a hero-heroine jodi shares is usually much-talked about in filmdom, it’s no different for the hero-hero jodis either. And these male pairings are creating as much buzz between filmmakers who are looking to get the right combinations for their films. In that the pairing of actors John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan (post Dostana) still is quite a favourite, while John’s pairing with Akshay Kumar is also one that many filmmakers consider, more so after their hit record together (Garam Masala, Desi Boyz) cemented by their film Housefull 2 becoming a Rs 100 crore hit.
According to trade insiders, the fact that John and Abhishek clicked together first in Dhoom and then in Dostana makes them a fave pair with filmmakers who are looking forward to casting them together again. And now there’s even more buzz about the two since there seems to be no fix on Dostana sequel. “Many filmmakers are keen to cash in on the excitement around the John-Abhishek jodi. Both the stars are individually coming from the 100 crore league and are riding high, making the pair even more viable in the market,” confirm trade pundits. What’s more, both of them are even known to share a great equation on sets. As for John’s pairing with Akshay, they reveal that it is being considered the safest jodi in B-Town. “All the three films that John and Akshay have done together have been hits, so naturally when it comes to pairing they are also on top of the mind for filmmakers,” says trade analyst Komal Nahta. “It’s always great fun working and bonding with both Akshay and Abhishek. I guess it’s the off screen comfort that shows onscreen,” says John.
Insiders also point out that many of the actors are yet to be seen on screen with other stars. “There was a lot of buzz about Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol being paired in a film, as they both come from two very different kinds of cinema. So, that naturally made them an interesting combination. But in the movie since they were hardly sharing the screen space, the jodi is yet to prove in terms of chemistry. So, they are also a pair being talked about,” they explain.
Abhishek with actor Ajay Devgn (post Bol Bachchan) Hrithik Roshan with Farhan Akhtar or Abhay Deol (post Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara), Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal, Emraan and Randeep Hooda, are the other current pairs doing the rounds in popularity talk in B-Town.
But among the much older pairs that they would want to see a repeat of include: SRK-Saif Ali Khan, Saif and Akshay, Salman and Aamir Khan, Akshay and Ajay, SRK and Hrithik.
“These pairs apart, there are also the upcoming films that will have new pairing. Like Akshay and Imran Khan being paired together for the first time in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai is being discussed already,” confirm industry insiders.
