Actor Aamir Khan has named his newborn son after his great grand-uncle, one of the most illustrious freedom fighters of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
In a press statement, Aamir declared that the baby will be retaining both his parents' surnames, and will be called Azad Rao Khan. A scion from a leading Bollywood family retaining his mother's title is a first in the industry. It's another first for B-Town added to the birth of a baby via a surrogate mother through In Vitro Fertiliasation (IVF).
"Hey guys, most excited to share with y'all that we have finally chosen a name for our baby boy... Azad. Azad Rao Khan," Aamir declared in the statement.
According to Aamir, he had left the choice of the name to Kiran.
"I left the final choice to Kiran, and she has named him after my great grand uncle Maulana Azad, the great freedom fighter, whom the family is most proud of. Azad means free or liberated.
"We want to thank everyone for their warm wishes and blessings, and needless to say we are absolutely overjoyed and feel most blessed," added Aamir.
The actor's message was later posted on his official page on a social networking site as wishes poured in from his Bollywood colleagues and fans.
While Aamir, whose son was born on December 1, has already got his name, the Bachchans are yet to name give a name to Beti Bachchan, who was born on November 16. They are also expected to make an announcement soon.
