‘We fight for the After Hrs!’

Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza visited us on Monday, their first tete-a-tete at a newspaper office, post marriage — and bowled us over with their charm, humour…and affection for our paper!

Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza are both glowing. We can’t say whether it’s because they’re sporting the just-married, newly-wed glow, or because they’re happy to be at After Hrs with us. We hope it’s both, for the effervescent couple are adding much needed spark to an otherwise dreary workday.
“It’s my first visit to a newspaper office,” Genelia tells us, and we’re thrilled it’s ours. Riteish has been to a Marathi paper workspace before. He loves the papers, Genelia lets on. He reads a good many, in fact.
“The fact is that there are people who start with After Hrs and go to DNA. I start with the first page,” Riteish elaborates.
“I take After Hrs before the main DNA,” Genelia happily reveals. “It’s like Riteish is holding the whole paper, and I’m still trying to get the After Hrs!
“We’re glad that you fight for After Hrs,” I’m smiling with the two, and so is the team. “Can I say that?”
“Yes. We fight for the After Hrs!”Riteish laughingly acquiesces.
Their film Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya is up for release and the timing is on the dot, just after their real life marriage, as if God had a plan: “It’s a film that’s taken eight years to sign together, we really waited, so it’s special,” Genelia says.
They recount how Riteish never disclosed to Genelia that he knew she was being considered as the leading lady, till she signed, because he wanted her choice to be based on the script’s importance not the fact that they’d be working together.
We ask how it is that they managed to be so guarded about their personal life, despite being in B-Town. “We just lied,” Riteish disarmingly laughs, and the team laughs with him. In fact their camaraderie tends to draw those choo-chweet sighs from this hard-hearted journo gathering, especially their split-second timed girl-boy admissions: to the question, ‘So were you each other’s first love?’ Genelia’s emphatic, ‘Yes!’ Riteish, sheepishly boyish: ‘Almost!’ The team erupts, the duo as loud as us all.
It’s both reel and real, the moment, it’s part of our world, love’s in the air in Valentine’s month and just for now, till they’re with us, till cold reality breaks the spell, we’re happy to look through rose-tinted glasses, we’re believers…
