Renowned Punjabi actor and comedian Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025, at a private hospital in Mohali, Punjab, following a brief illness. He was 65 years old. Bhalla's death has been met with widespread grief and শোক from fans, colleagues, and political leaders alike, who remember him for his immense contribution to Punjabi cinema and his ability to bring laughter to generations.
Born on May 4, 1960, in Ludhiana, Punjab, Jaswinder Bhalla began his journey in the world of entertainment in 1988 with the audio cassette "Chhankata 88," alongside his schoolmate Bal Mukand Sharma. This marked the beginning of his professional career as a comedian. Bhalla's association with Bal Mukand Sharma proved to be a turning point, as they created the iconic "Chhankata" series, which became a cultural phenomenon in Punjab. The word "Chhankata" originated from a college-level annual show performed by Bhalla and Sharma at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).
Bhalla's character, "Chacha Chatar Singh," from the "Chhankata" series, became a household name, celebrated for its rustic humor and insightful social commentary. Over the years, Jaswinder Bhalla released around 27 installments of "Chhankata," which were widely loved by Punjabi audiences worldwide.
Beyond his work in comedy series, Jaswinder Bhalla was also known for his roles in numerous Punjabi films, where his impeccable comic timing and unique catchphrases struck a chord with audiences. He was particularly recognized for his role as advocate Dhillon in the "Carry On Jatta" film franchise, which further solidified his position as a leading comedian in Punjabi cinema. Some of his other notable films include "Mahaul Theek Hai," "Jatt Airways," "Jatt & Juliet 2," "Gaddi Chaldi Hai Chhalla Maarke," "Jind Jaan," and "Band Baaje."
Before dedicating himself fully to his entertainment career, Jaswinder Bhalla had a successful academic career. He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Punjab Agricultural University and a Ph.D. from Chaudhary Charan Singh Post Graduate College, Meerut. He began his career as an Assistant Professor at PAU and retired in 2020 as a professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education.
News of Jaswinder Bhalla's death has deeply saddened the Punjabi film industry and his numerous fans. Many political leaders have expressed their condolences, acknowledging his significant contribution to public life. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann mourned Bhalla's passing, stating that "Chacha Chatra will always reside in our hearts."
