Baby boom in Hollywood

2015 was a year that saw a number of high-profile Hollywood celebrities giv ing birth. Right from Kim KardashianWest's high profile pregnancy to Keira Knightley's low-key one, several stars welcomed a new addition to their family. Here are some of them...

Kim Kardashian-West

Right from talking about her sonographies, swollen feet and food cravings to discussing how she hated being pregnant as well as flaunting her baby bump in fitting, sheer outfits, Kanye West's better half was right out there, apologetically in-yourface, milking it for what it's worth. The reality show star has reportedly already lost 17 pounds of baby weight.

Jessica Biel

Partner: Justin Timberlake Gave birth to: Baby boy Silas Randall Timberlake on April 11 Biel and Timberlake have been together for almost a decade and welcomed their firstborn in April this year. The actress had a rather low profile pregnancy with her husband confirming it just four months before she gave birth. While Timberlake has been busy with his projects, Biel is all set to open a children's restaurant in Los Angeles early next year.

Carrie Underwood

She and her musician husband have relocated to New York for her Broadway run in the play Therese Raquin. GAY AND PROUD IN 2015

GAY AND PROUD IN 2015

Here's a look at some defining moments of the LGBT community this year
WHEN THEY WERE PROCLAIMED, `WOMAN AND WIFE'...
It was in May this year that Smruthi Narayan and Shwetha Pai were pronounced `woman and wife' at the City Hall in San Francisco -making them the first lesbian couple from Hyderabad to be united in marriage. They had to shift base to Hyderabad from Bengaluru amidst threats from families that also forced them to go into hiding for a few months, apart from facing humiliation and shaming. After 10 longs years of being in a relationship, they are happy to have received the legal tag.
GAZETTED OFFICER GOES FROM `SIR' TO `MADAM'
Ratikanta Pradhan, a 32-year-old serving in the Orissa Financial Service, came out to the public as a transgender.Aishwarya Rutuparna Pradhan, as she calls herself, says the April 15, 2014, Supreme Court ruling recognising transgenders under the third gender category and guaranteeing their constitutional rights, gave her courage. She said, “After the judgement, I switched over to sari. Those who addressed me as `sir' are now calling me `madam'.“
INDIA GETS ITS FIRST TRANSGENDER SI
From Pradeep Kumar to K Prithika Yashini, the journey of this 25-year-old has been anything but easy. From being confused about her gender to which washroom to use in school, she grew up scared. Today, she is India's first transgender sub-inspector of police. In February, she applied for the post of a sub-inspector, but was rejected on the grounds that Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services a Recruitment Board doesn't have a third-gender catego ry. Determined, she moved the petition in the Madras High Court, which eventually led to her recruitment.
MR GAY WORLD (INDIA) FORCED TO DROP OUT OF PAGEANT, BUT BECOMES THE VOICE AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA
In the country of Section 377, if you are gay and gorgeous, you are guilty. Or so Thahir Mohammed Sayyed was made to believe when he was compelled to opt out of the Mr Gay World pageant this year, where he was to represent India. “I hope the organisers appreciate the difficulties I faced. I cannot take this pressure,“ said the 28-year-old model and designer, over a flurry of homophobic abuse back home, not just to himself but also his family in Kochi. The pressure was so much that Thahir had to go incommunicado and even deactivated his social networking account. His family too had to go into hiding post the backlash. But in the midst of all that, Thahir became a poster boy of sorts, with support pouring in for him from all over the world.
WHEN LILY-ROSE GOT SELF-EVIDENT
Johnny Depp's daughter and model Lily Rose made a subtle statement about her sexuality by taking part in a quirky campaign aimed at promoting society's acceptance of LGBT people in America. Tillet Wright, who was behind this campaign, shared a picture with her online, writing, “I'm so proud of my baby girl. She decided she wanted to be in @selfevidentproject because she falls somewhere on the vast spectrum, and I couldn't be happier to welcome her to the family.“
KRISTEN'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER PA
Two years after Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's break-up, her mother Jules Stewar, confirmed that Kristen is now dating her personal assistant, Alicia Cargile. It is quite an obvious confirmation of the actress' bisexuality.
WHEN BRUCE BECAME CAITLYN
Caitlyn Jenner After much speculation, Bruce Jenner also came out as a transgender in an interview. The former Olympian, who was previously married to Kardashian matriarch, Kris Jenner, said, “I am a woman. My whole life has been getting me ready for this.“
PRO ACTION SPORTS STAR ANNOUNCES HE'S GAY
The top freestyle skier in the world and a silver medalist from the Sochi Olympics, Gus Kenworthy, announced that he was gay in a magazine interview. He is the first pro action sports star to come out publicly. “Hiding everything away is so painful. I mean you're constantly lying and you're constantly feeling like you're being deceitful,“ Kenworthy said and added, “I'm at that point where I'm ready to open up and let everyone see me for me, and I hope they accept it.“

Singer Altamash Faridi

MUSIC GIVES ME SOLACE
Singer Altamash Faridi
Singer Altamash Faridi

Singer Altamash Faridi is delighted to be part of the ensembles for Deewani Mastani and Aaj Ibaadat from Bajirao Mastani
Altamash Faridi has spent four short but fruitful years in Mumbai with a roster of songs he has steadily built up, including His latest is his songs in Bajirao Mastani. Excerpts from an interview:

How did Deewani Mastani and Aaj Ibaadat happen?

I had just come back from a show in Delhi and had a bad throat. I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from Shail Hada who works with Sanjay Leela Bhansali (filmmaker and music director of Bajirao Mastani). He said, `Sanjayji wants to record you. He appreciates the songs you have done before so come to the studio.' He had heard my voice in Awaara (Alone). I was happy to get such a big opportunity for a big film with Sanjayji. I went there with my brother Shadab Sabri and they liked my voice. The first song we recorded was Deewani Mastani. He briefed me about how he wanted me to sound and it went off smoothly.
After Deewani Mastani, Sanjayji asked me to sing the part in Aaj Ibaadat. The song goes `Aaj ibaadat rubaru ho gayi. Jo maangi thi uss dua se guftagu ho gayi.' It's a love song. It also means my prayers are answered so it's a Sufi love song. My training in Hindustani classical with my dad helped me execute this difficult song. I didn't have to pretend to be anything else with Sanjayji. It was a breeze working with him.

What was it like singing with your brother?

I had sung with Shadab before in Mann Kunto Maula (Gunday). Pritamda asked us to do the vocals together for the theme song of Dhoom 3. Shadab and I have been doing live shows together for a couple of years. Our synergy on stage is superb. Shadab has been living in Mumbai for a while and I moved here four years ago.

How did your journey into music happen?

I was crazy about cricket and wouldn't study when I was small. It would get dad worried.Music is my life. If it wasn't for music, I don't know what would have happened to me.Music gives me solace. I learnt classical music from my father Ustad Mehtab Faridi. He's quite a strict teacher. He tells us rightly, `If I hadn't scolded you both while training, you wouldn't have reached the heights today.' I was obsessed with going to Mumbai and singing for films. I would dream about the day my songs would be shown on TV, and by God's grace, those days have come.
I left college to come to Mumbai. I loved to sing at functions. Teachers used to shout at me for not studying. One professor told me, `You are wasting your time and your parents' money.' The students used to make fun of me in college. When I would walk by, they would jibe, `Arre, woh dekho singer aa raha hai.' I used to forget the taunts and jokes when I got on the stage. I had a feeling that one day, I would make a name for myself and be appreciated. The same people are happy to see me when I go back to Saharanpur. It used to be a small town back then, today it's more of a cosmopolitan city.

How did your career in Bollywood start?

I was sitting idle for a long time after coming to Mumbai. I didn't know who to meet and what to do for a few months. Someone advised me to return home and complete my studies. It angered me but I was considering going back. That was when I was selected for a reality singing show on Doordarshan. The same guy said that I would be outed in a couple of rounds but Shadab encouraged me. I feel honoured that I got to sing in front of yesteryear music director Ravindra Jainji. He encouraged me a lot and I went on to win. My confidence came back. After that, stage shows started and I got the title track of No Problem. That started my career in Bollywood music. Mithoon is another person I owe a lot to.

Who is your idol?

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
What's next?
I am doing live shows with Kanika Kapoor and am looking forward to my next song Jeena Sikha Diya in Do Lafzon Ki Kahani.

Bizarre challenges, buzzwords, selfie sticks...
things we'd like to leave behind this year

The global obsession with the gluten-free diet, netizens taking up insane internet challenges, multiple bans that enraged the entire country... these are some of the things that defined 2015. After reviewing the year gone by, we've come up with a wish list of all things silly, annoying and exasperating that we hope don't make it to the next year.

SNUBBING THE DINNER PLATE

After molecular gastronomy became the hottest culinary trend this year, restaurants and gastropubs went a step ahead and started serving food on wacky tableware like tablets, syringes, dog bowls, test tubes and even shoes, giving the good ol' dinner plate a snub! Such was the backlash from foodies that a campaign called We Want Plates against this experiment eventually took off online.

BIZARRE ONLINE CHALLENGES

One persistent idea that flooded the social media was the various online challenges that people all over the world participated in. From the dangerous Kylie Jenner lips challenge to the latest condom challenge, people of all age groups competed in them and the videos went viral.

INNUMERABLE BANS

This was the year our country witnessed bans of all kinds, which were then followed by public outrage, endless debates and discussions. The beef ban in Maharashtra, crackdown on pornographic websites, stalling of the release of films (Fifty Shades of Grey) and documentaries (India's Daughter) and even the ban on instant noodles...the list is exhaustive.

HOVERBOARDS

This latest gizmo toy is already being banned in airports across the world for being a potentially dangerous ride. While videos of people balancing on these ridiculous, hands-free segways make for great laughs, we wish they would rather walk.

SELFIE STICKS

From Disneyland to Wimbledon, everyone agrees that the selfie stick is the silliest thing that has happened to photography . It has a bad rep for allegedly killing more people than sharks this year! Whatever happened to taking pictures the old-fashioned way?

GLUTEN-FREE DIETS

Everyone from your local baker to the biggest brands in the food industry jumped on the gluten-free diet bandwagon this year. While your friend or neighbour may swear by the many benefits of eating a gluten-free pizza or dessert, experts have exposed the myth behind this phoney health craze. They have revealed that unless you are suffering from celiac disease (in which the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten), these foods aren't going to make you any healthier.

ANNOYING BUZZWORDS

Whether it's the highly popular term of endearment `bae', the catchy phrase `fleek on' from a Nicki Minaj song, or `yaaas', the super excited version of yes, all these irritating words, which were seen in countless memes, internet spoofs and pop culture references, flooded social media.

KAPIL VS KRUSHNA

After Kapil Sharma decided to pull the plug on Comedy Nights With Kapil, the channel has now roped in Krushna Abhishek to step into his shoes. The show will be rechristened Comedy Nights With Krushna. Here's taking stock of their individual strengths and weaknesses on various parameters:

SPONTANEITY AND WIT

Kapil is known for his spontaneity and impromptu one-liners. He takes pot-shots at the audience without indulging in cringe comedy. His funny banters with the audience members evoke more laughter and are seldom offensive. Comedy is Krushna's second nature. His show Comedy Nights Bachao, which has the actor at the helm of things, has brought his refined sense of humour to the fore, which would earlier get overshadowed by the ensemble cast.

AUDIENCE CONNECT

As the face of the show, he shares a better rapport with the audience, who feel that he is one of them. He has guests coming from all corners of the world to watch him live.Though Kapil has a supporting cast, he has strong individual presence and a huge fan-following. He's always been seen as part of the pack -either teamed up with Sudesh Lahiri or supported by other artistes, which has not given him the opportunity to establish an individual equation with his viewers. However, Bachao... has elevated him to the league of strong solo performers.

POPULAR AMONGST CELEBS

Film stars seem more at ease on Kapil's show. Every movie star wants to promote their movie on his show. While Kapil can't stop raving about the guests, the celebrities compliment him galore for his comic acts. He is also well-known in Bollywood and has managed to cultivate friendships with the industry . He has appeared in a few films and has more in the pipeline. Given his filmi connect, it shouldn't take him time to establish himself as the new host.

SURPRISE ELEMENT, FRESHNESS OF CONCEPT

Kapil brought along a dose of freshness with his show. Since there was no baggage from his previous outings, whatever he did caught the viewers by surprise. They just lapped it up.He had an upperhand on others for bringing a never-tried-before concept to the table. Krushna, who was always a star, courtesy his overexposure in the comedy genre on the small screen, will have to prove his mettle all over again as the solo host of the show. What might work in his favour is that many feel Kapil's show has run its course and the comedian's oneliners have become redundant.
THE PERFECT FAMILY
Sunil Grover's Gutthi, Kiku Sharda's Palak and Ali Asgar's Dadi are an integral part of Kapil's family . They have also grown on the viewers and carved a niche for themselves. One of Krushna's biggest challenges will be to also ensure his new `family' (the cast is yet to be finalised) gets accepted by the viewers. He will need a back-up of strong performers to take the show to new heights.

2015 an emotional roller coaster: Inside Out

Taking a cue from the Hollywood flick, we take you through different events that made you cry for joy, react in disgust and anger, quiver in fear and feel gut-wrenching sadness all through this year

Sadness

While we celebrated some heart warming moments, there were heart wrenching scenes and tragedies we just could not escape from the floods in Chennai that saw more than 200 lives lost, to the terror attacks that shook Paris, to the mindless killings in the Charlie Hebdo incident to the collective helplessness all of us experienced hearing about the mindless killings by terrorists organisations like ISIS, the earthquake in Nepal and closer home the lynching of a man on the suspicion that he ate beef/slaughtered a cow and the continuing farmer suicides. All of these incidents had us unite in grief mourning the loss of innocent lives.

Joy

This year many Bollywood couples welcomed a new born into their lives, starting with B-Town’s power couple Rani and Aditya Chopra and including Ritiesh and Genelia Deshmukh, Mohit Suri and Udita Goswami, Imran Khan and Avantika Malik,  Nawazuddin and Anjali Siddiqui, Vivek Oberoi and Priyanka Alva who were all visited by the proverbial stork. In other baby news that created quite a buzz was of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla’s daughter Max and  Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ baby Wyatt Isabelle. In a world that’s increasingly becoming intolerant it’s the little gestures that mean a lot. Harman Singh, who lives in Auckland, New Zealand, heard screeching wheels and ran outside to find that Daejon Pahia had been hit by a car. Without a second thought he removed his turban to help an injured boy, a handful of friendly strangers acted quickly to return the favour. Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old Muslim boy from Texas who landed in handcuffs after having his homemade clock mistaken for a bomb at school, made news across the globe after his wrongful detainment. The world showed solidarity with messages of support. It did not end there. President Barack Obama was among the many well-wishers who reached out to the teen, making you admire how the world took a stand to fix something that was so wrong. In yet another expression of tolerance  Google CEO Sundar Pichai took a subtle jab at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, over his recent anti-Muslim comments. More power to a more tolerant world. Swiss champion Martina Hingis and India’s Sania Mirza won their ninth title at the WTA Finals in Singapore. The duo, crowned the best doubles team of the yearthrashed the Spanish pair of Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro to clinch the WTA Finals women’s doubles trophy. More power to this duo. Miss Universe 2015 saw a lot of emotions onstage. A major gaffe by the host Steve Harvey resulted in probably the most awkward, sad and happy moment on stage.

Disgust

What do you call organisations who try to make a profit when people are faced with a massive tragedy of the scale of the one experienced by the people stranded due to the Chennai floods? Many domestic airlines instead of reaching out and helping people decided to make a quick buck by escalating fares to exorbitant rates. The move was obviously slammed by everyone and had us reacting with disgust at both the insensitivity and the complete disregard for what people were going through at a very difficult time.
Unsuitable appointments and the FTII protests had the nation divided. While some questioned the student’s decision to protest the questionable appointment of Gajendra Chauhan many alumni and sections of the liberal society extended their support to the protests. And while many acknowledged the fact that Chauhan was not the ideal candidate for the job, the protests unfortunately did not achieve its primary goal — Chauhan’s ouster.  Another controversial appointment was that of Pahlaj Nihalani, the present head of the Central Board of Film Certification of India. Many people were dismissive about his appointment and it became a source of disgust because of the haphazard way of functioning and  absurd diktats.

Anger

Animal lovers all over the nation were appalled  at the Kerala government’s decision to conntinue stray dog culling despite protests. It had us seething in anger, even as the government stood by its decision despite various protests. Uncomfortable with a point of view — ban it, don’t like someone’s food habits - ban it, uncomfortable with intimacy onscreen— ban it, don’t want to hear abuses in films — ban it. It looked like the authorities solution to every uncomfortable situation was to simply ban it, leading to anger and resentment among many sections of society, questioning the logic in enforcing bans as a solution time and again.
Political parties absurd diktats —Whether it’s protests against expressing one’s opinion freely or resorting to appealing to people to boycott a film simply because the actor chose to donate to one cause. The absurdity and illogical reasoning had us fuming in anger wondering why an actor was being picked at for having a contrary opinion or for choosing a cause.

Fear

The Dadri lynching, the overall hostile comments and picking on religious minorities has created an atmosphere of fear. Actor Aamir Khan voiced that fear and was ripped apart for it. Instead of examining why a certain section of people were feeling threatened, many jumped on the bandwagon to target the messenger than hear him out.
Governments may change, but women in India are constantly living in fear. The increase in attacks on women, add to that the news of the release of that the juvenile accused in the December16 gangrape and murder of paramedical student, had women feeling very unsafe, questioning the authorities on measures being taken for their security.
