Bizarre challenges, buzzwords, selfie sticks...
things we'd like to leave behind this year

The global obsession with the gluten-free diet, netizens taking up insane internet challenges, multiple bans that enraged the entire country... these are some of the things that defined 2015. After reviewing the year gone by, we've come up with a wish list of all things silly, annoying and exasperating that we hope don't make it to the next year.

SNUBBING THE DINNER PLATE

After molecular gastronomy became the hottest culinary trend this year, restaurants and gastropubs went a step ahead and started serving food on wacky tableware like tablets, syringes, dog bowls, test tubes and even shoes, giving the good ol' dinner plate a snub! Such was the backlash from foodies that a campaign called We Want Plates against this experiment eventually took off online.

BIZARRE ONLINE CHALLENGES

One persistent idea that flooded the social media was the various online challenges that people all over the world participated in. From the dangerous Kylie Jenner lips challenge to the latest condom challenge, people of all age groups competed in them and the videos went viral.

INNUMERABLE BANS

This was the year our country witnessed bans of all kinds, which were then followed by public outrage, endless debates and discussions. The beef ban in Maharashtra, crackdown on pornographic websites, stalling of the release of films (Fifty Shades of Grey) and documentaries (India's Daughter) and even the ban on instant noodles...the list is exhaustive.

HOVERBOARDS

This latest gizmo toy is already being banned in airports across the world for being a potentially dangerous ride. While videos of people balancing on these ridiculous, hands-free segways make for great laughs, we wish they would rather walk.

SELFIE STICKS

From Disneyland to Wimbledon, everyone agrees that the selfie stick is the silliest thing that has happened to photography . It has a bad rep for allegedly killing more people than sharks this year! Whatever happened to taking pictures the old-fashioned way?

GLUTEN-FREE DIETS

Everyone from your local baker to the biggest brands in the food industry jumped on the gluten-free diet bandwagon this year. While your friend or neighbour may swear by the many benefits of eating a gluten-free pizza or dessert, experts have exposed the myth behind this phoney health craze. They have revealed that unless you are suffering from celiac disease (in which the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten), these foods aren't going to make you any healthier.

ANNOYING BUZZWORDS

Whether it's the highly popular term of endearment `bae', the catchy phrase `fleek on' from a Nicki Minaj song, or `yaaas', the super excited version of yes, all these irritating words, which were seen in countless memes, internet spoofs and pop culture references, flooded social media.
