BIGGEST MOMENTS IN MUSIC

The year had a lot happening — breakups and patch-ups, comebacks, revivals, announcements and silences, face-offs and a great deal of crazy

Bryan Durham

How this year has flown! Adele returned and the numbers are doing all things (she’s singlehandedly outselling all the others out there), Kanye West announced his intentions (I mean, if Trump can, why can’t he?), Drake (in Hotline Bling) and Ed Sheeran (Thinking Out Loud) showed off their dance moves. While Ed got the wows, Drake got the whys. Miley continued being cray and Tay Tay had her day. Here’s the roundup...

Adele said Hello

With Hello, Adele topped the Billboard charts for the ninth consecutive week. 25 stays strong as ever in album sales, despite Justin Bieber’s Purpose bringing the heat with hit singles. This would be the longest she stays unmoved at the top of the charts. The queen is back.

Forget Bad Blood, Taylor has ‘friends’

Everybody loves Taylor Swift. If you needed more proof of this, just check out the squad she has amassed over the past year as she showed off a big list of buddies — apart from supermodels like Gigi Hadid and Cara Delevingne — she had rock’n’roll royalty Mick Jagger and Steven Tyler sharing the stage with her, as also the likes of Lorde and Pitbull among others, along with other pop culture mavens like Ellen and Lisa Kudrow.

Justin Bieber found Purpose

The Biebs made a triumphant return with the Skrillex/Diplo produced Where Are U Now? He followed by What Do You Mean, Sorry and Love Yourself

Zayn took a different direction

Zayn Malik left the biggest boyband in the world and announced a single with producer Naughty Boy. A little drama followed with much back-and-forth and a tell-tale (suspicious) track called Drag Me Down.

Kanye for president?!

He sounded serious and with his friends in powerful places and his friendship with Obama, that might well happen in a few years. Yeezus Almighty is making all the right moves, but knowing his penchant for making statements such as these, one wonders if he will follow it through...

Apple vs Tidal vs Spotify

It has been the battle of the streaming services that had everyone who’s even a little tech-savvy gathered around for some ‘cooler conversations’. Jay Z’s exclusivity-based model had takers within the industry, while Spotify was loved and loathed in equal measure. Apple Music made its debut — sort of — and even moved to Android as well.

Music @ the movies

The year was ripe with documentaries on the biggest names in soul, rock and rap. Janis Joplin’s life was viewed with Little Girl Blue, the simply-titled Amy by Asif Kapadia painted an intimate portait of the songstress, the Kurt Cobain docu Montage Of Heck seemed no less personal and what was a revelation of sorts on the NWA, came with the strongly-produced Straight Outta Compton by Dr Dre.

Anybody can dance

Drake showed off some meme-worthy moves in Hotline Bling and that became a talking point for quite a while, but it was the unexpected and sultry ballroom grooving by Ed Sheeran in Thinking About You that had everyone sit up and take notice of the hitmakers dance-worthy moves as well as his heart-melting verse.

Miley madness

The VMAs are her playground but her Dead Petz Tour and other events were enough for her to showcase her resident manicness in a way few pop culture icons these days can. Call it outright madness, but there’s no denying Miley’s attention-grabbing antics are having the desired effect on audiences and critics alike

Who’s your Daddy?

KPop icon PSY decided to out his seventh album this year and almost immediately released two singles at once. The more crazier of the two, Daddy found immediate takers while the other one took time to catch on. Just as well...
