WHEN THE STARS TAKE SOUVENIRS FROM THE SET

WHEN THE STARS TAKE SOUVENIRS FROM THE SET

Sometimes the costumes and props used on the set of a film become as iconic, if not more so, than the actors using them. Think Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, or the Iron Man suit(s) that Robert Downey Jr wears when he plays the superhero. And sometimes, the stars take them home as souvenirs because they’ve forged a connection with the characters they’ve played and the objects that helped them do so. Here’s a peek at stars who’ve taken home props or costumes from the films they’ve worked on...

DEEPIKA PADUKONE Film: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Souvenir: Glasses
Deepika Padukone, who never wore glasses in any of her previous films, is said to prize the pair she wore in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD). It’s been reported that Deepika — who says that her YJHD character, Naina Talwar, is very like what she is in real life — wants the glasses she wore in the film as a souvenir. “Naina is a special character for me. The glasses helped me live that part. I’d like to keep them as a memory of her,” she told BT in an earlier interview. The glasses are said to be with the YJHD team, but the film’s producer Karan Johar has given them instructions to send them to Deepika.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY
Films: Pride & Prejudice, Dr
Zhivago
Souvenirs: Socks, coats
Some of the memorabilia that
Pirates of the Caribbean
actress Keira Knightley treasures are her costumes from her more traditional period films. It has been said that she kept the coats she wore as her character Lara in the TV mini-series Dr Zhivago, and the striped socks she wore as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice.

KRISTEN STEWART
Film: Twilight: Eclipse
Souvenir: Engagement ring
After the final scene of the last Twilight film wrapped, Kristen took back a couple of souvenirs, most notably the ring Edward Cullens (played by her real-life then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson) gives to Bella at the end of Twilight: Eclipse, the third movie in the series. Kristen has been quoted as saying that these memorabilia are “really, really extremely important to me. I love those things.”

 LILY COLLINS
Film: Mirror Mirror Souvenir: Dagger, poster As Snow White, Lily got to wear some elaborate costumes. But after the film’s shoot, she took some low-profile props. “I got one of my daggers and one of the posters that says ‘Snow White is Dead’,” she said.

ZACHARY QUINTO
Film: Star Trek: Into
Darkness
Souvenir: Spock’s ears
Zachary Quinto says he considered the fact that every pair of prosthetic ears he wore to play Spock in the Star Trek reboot was cut up and thrown away “wasteful”. “In the second movie, I asked if I could preserve a couple for my own collection of ephemera, which I did. I have a couple of pairs of ears,” he said, after he finished filming his second Star Trek movie.

THE CAST OF THE HARRY POTTER FILMS

When the shoot of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was coming to a close, several of the cast
members lined up to lay their hands on Potter props. Only the lead actors were allowed to keep some memorabilia.

 DANIEL RADCLIFFE
Film: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Souvenir: Glasses
Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, said, “I got two pairs of glasses, one from the first (film) and one from the last, and I’m very happy.” He also said he wasn’t interested in the wand and broom he used in the films.

 EMMA WATSON
Film: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Souvenirs: Time Turner, wand, cloak
Emma Watson took home some standard props (well, for a Potter cast member) and something more specific to her character. “I took my wand, and I took my Time Turner, and I took a cloak,” she said.

RUPERT GRINT
Film: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2
Souvenirs:
Deluminator, 4 Privet Drive sign Rupert took the number of the Dursleys’ house — 4 Privet Drive. He was also given the Deluminator, which Dumbledore used and willed to him, after the shoot for the final film wound up.
WHAT CELEBS WISHED THEY HAD TAKEN BACK FROM THE SETS Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby): “I guess if I were taking something home with me, it’d probably be his (Gatsby’s) car (a yellow 1929 Duesenberg).”

• Simon Pegg (Scotty in Star Trek: Intro Darkness): “I got to carry a phaser (gun) this time and that was like a dream come true. If I could’ve stolen that I would.”

• Lily Collins (Snow White in Mirror Mirror): “Costume-wise, I would love the swan head hat.”
