PEOPLE THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY TO MAKE MR. INDIA: BONEY KAPOOR

It was an imaginative story of an aam Hindustani, who went on to become a superhero of sorts. In a generation that had not seen anything like this on the silver screen, Mr . India, directed by Shekhar Kapur, starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri, achieved cult status. As the film completes 30 years this month, India's invisible man, the mighty Mogambo and the sizzling and haughty Ms. Hawa Hawai remain iconic and unforgettable. The man, Boney Kapoor, who was called the “Hero of the film“ for showing sheer guts for backing it as a producer, reminisces the making of the film and the magical effect of Mr .India. Read on...
`PICTURE AISI BANAO KI LOGON KO THEATRE JAANA HI PAD JAAYE'

We had a dream team for Mr . India, and at that point of time, I think I was the youngest guy behind the scenes. The spirit of the team was fantastic, including all the kids. We had created a classroom kind of space for them, so that their friends and family could join them. There was a lavish menu on the cards every day . We shot the film for over 350 days. Back then, a film with an A-list star (Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Khanna) would cost nothing above `40-50 lakhs. I'm talking only about the single-hero projects; of course, films like Sholay and Karma were multi-starrers and were made on a different scale. I spent close to `3.80 crores on Mr India. I don't think that even a big film like Karma spent this kind of money (Subhash Ghai will hit me for this).

Films would take around 80-100 days to shoot, but we took three times more than that. Sri's (Sridevi) mother would allot 3540 days for most of her films, but she made an exception for us. We were shooting for so long that there was immense curiosity about the project. So many actors like Jeetendra and Shashi Kapoor would drop in on the sets that we had erected in Versova (by the beach) for months, just to see what it was all about. Jeetuji said, `Tum log bana kya rahe ho? Jitne mein meri picture banti hai, utna tumne sirf iss set pe kharcha kiya hai'. Around the time Mr India had released, international circuit mein piracy bahut zyada thi. Everyone was talking about it, but I said, `Let's make a film that people would be forced to watch on the big screen'. Picture aisi banao ki logon ko theatre jaana hi pad jaaye.

`SALIM-JAVED WERE TO PRODUCE MR INDIA WITH AMITABH BACHCHAN'

I had the guts to back Mr India when no one did. I never had a budget, I was just passionate about the film and I went all out. I was mighty impressed with the way Shekhar narrated the film in just five-six minutes. I signed him up the next day for `70,000, while at that time, the signing amount was about `10,000.

Initially, Salim-Javed were sup posed to produce Mr .India with Amitabh Bachchan.

There was even talk that Ramesh Sippy was consider ing it, but he felt it was too expensive for a single-hero project. In fact, Javed saab was the one who suggested Shekhar's name, and we all decided to go ahead.

`I HAD SEEN SRIDEVI'S CHIFFON SAREE LOOK IN JAANBAAZ, SO I ASKED SHEKHAR... `CAN WE BETTER THAT SONG?''

It was a perception that Anil would be missing in the film. They thought he was crazy to play a man who keeps dis appearing and I was crazy to make the film. In fact, Anil is there throughout the film. Mr. India is his most iconic character. Nobody could do the role like him. I don't know how it would have been if Amitabh Bachchan had done it.

Maybe, it would be designed differently , because at that point, he carried the image of the angry young man. I remember that we picked up Anil's jacket from Mumbai's famous Chor Bazaar, it was n't customised. He wore his old jeans and only his shirt was stitched. For the song Kaate Nahin Kat Te, we got an elabo rate outfit designed for Sri, but I changed my mind. I had seen her chiffon saree look in Jaanbaaz, and Feroz Khan had picturised it fabulously . So, I told Shekhar Kapur, `Can we better that song?' I wanted everything to be handled aesthetically . Also, all that you see in the film was shot in real-time. From the special effects to the fightsequences, nothing was done in post.

`MR. INDIA WAS THE LAST RELEASED FILM THAT SALIMJAVED WROTE TOGETHER'

When the script was narrated to me, we didn't have the villain's track, that was reworked later. It so happened that Pramod Chakravorty (director of films like Love in Tokyo and Dream Girl) had a mahurat planned with Amitabh Bachchan for some film. Somehow, he couldn't reach the event, and Amitabh's recorded voice was played on the speaker. That's where they got the seed of the idea and then, they worked on the script.Unfortunately , they (Salim-Javed) parted, and I think this was their last released film as co-writers, but actually , they had worked on the structure way before I started shooting.

`ALMOST EVERY VILLAIN IN THE INDUSTRY WANTED TO BE MOGAMBO'

Those days, superhero films like Superman and Batman were gaining popularity here, and Shekhar wanted something on those lines which was larger than life. Almost every villain in the industry wanted to do this part. Javed saab said that his takia kalam would be `Mogambo khush hua' and we all jumped at it. He even predicted that the line will be remembered for as long as film industry exists. The challenge was to create the aura that Sholay's Gabbar (Singh, played by Amjad Khan) had, or come as close. While we had auditioned a couple of actors, Amrish Puri was at the back of my mind as Hum Paanch had just catapulted his villainous stature in the industry . A massive set was constructed at RK Studios to shoot Mogambo's sequences.

`I'VE BACKED MY DIRECTOR'S VISION'

I am blamed for being overindulgent, but I'm not. I am just very honest, and I like to give everything I do, my all. I have been blessed that actors have backed me and I have backed my directors' vision. I have been brought up in the backyard of Raj Kapoor; my entire childhood was in their house, seeing Shammi Kapoor and Raj Kapoor reacting to their films. My father (film producer Surinder Kapoor) started his career as an assistant to K. Asif, so I grew up hearing conversations and stories about how lavishly they shot and envisioned their films, including Mughal-E-Azam. Perhaps, subconsciously, it stayed with me always. My father was a large-hearted person. He encouraged Anil and me and had blind faith in us, without ever questioning our decisions. I have done over 30 films and not every film has been lavish. Some films need that kind of scale. For Pukar, we went to Alaska and Mexico, which was rare back then. I have shot 12 of my films in North America. Also, in those days, AR Rahman was the biggest prize catch for a film, but for Pukar, without talking money and dates, he straightaway gave me a confirmation, saying, `You are the producer of Mr . India, I will do it'.Mr .India is one film that opened on a Wednesday in some centres, because there was a rush and theatre owners couldn't control the crowd.

`SRIDEVI DANCED TO HAWA HAWAI ON STAGE, IT WAS HER FIRST LIVE PERFORMANCE AS AN ACTRESS'

People talk about branding and marketing now, we did such exciting promotions years ago.For Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, I got singing and dancing dolls made of Anil and Sri.Before Mr .India released, there was an India-West Indies match at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium, where Anil landed in a helicopter in his Mr .India get-up.Sridevi performed on stage as an actress for the first time during the Hope `86 concert in Kolkata, where she danced to the song Hawa Hawai. She was nervous before the show, and it was also the first time that out of sheer shock or joy , or whatever the emotion was then, she came off the stage and held me. I was crazy about her, and that made my day .

`WOULD I LIKE TO MAKE MR. INDIA 2? YES, I WOULD LOVE TO'

In every era, there are films that open doors like Awara, Barsaat, Ganga Jumna, Sangam, Bobby, Sholay, Kranti, 3 Idiots, Dangal and Baahubali. I don't follow any benchmark, I only trust my instincts. Yes, I went through major lows, but there was nothing that could stop me. I was also fortunate to get an opportunity to work with some of the biggest stars of the film industry .Would I like to make Mr .India 2? Yes, I would love to. I am itching to make a few more films like Mr .India, Wanted and No Entry.

`SRI AND I NEVER CARRY OUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP ON THE SET. WHILE SHOOTING FOR MOM, WE WERE STAYING IN THE SAME HOTEL, BUT ON DIFFERENT FLOORS'

The dynamics are not different when I am working with my family . For instance, when we were shooting for Mom (his next production, starring wife Sridevi in the lead) in Noida, Sri and I were in same hotel, but we were staying on different floors. She wanted her space and I wanted mine. We never carry our personal relationship on the set and Sri is too focussed and dedicated to get distracted by anything.

7 FOODS THAT BURN FAT

INCLUDE THESE IN YOUR DAILY MEALS TO TORCH THE CALORIES

Body fat is an ugly truth of life for most Indian men. Our lifestyle is

Our lifestyle is such that it becomes almost impossible to avoid it. Just sweating out in the gym day and night is not enough to reach your goal of losing your body fat when your mother is busy feeding you the butter-laced aloo ka parantha. Along with a healthy work out, food also plays a crucial role in reducing body fat. Here are seven foods that help in burning fat.

1 EGGS

These are known to be high in protein, which burns fat faster than other fatty foods. It also contains Vitamin B12, eight minerals, iron, calcium and other macronutrients, which aid the body in metabolising fat.

2 FISH

Instead of reaching for your chicken curry next time, try opting for fish, especially tuna, salmon, mackerel, swordfish and flounder. Like eggs, fish is also a protein-rich food that burns more fat while getting digested instead of carbohydrates or fats. It also con tains Omega 3s, which prevent the build-up of stress chemicals that induce fat abs.

3 GREEN TEA

It is almost like a magical drink that has the power to keep most health problems at bay . It keeps those extra inches away by preventing fats from getting absorbed by the body . Drinking a cup of green tea everyday goes a long way in helping you achieve a healthy life.

4 OATMEAL

Oatmeal not only helps in cutting down the fat content but its rich fibre content helps in the reduction of cholesterol. It also stays for a longer period in the stomach, which takes care of your hunger pangs. However, opt for a natural sweetener like honey instead of sugar while preparing oats.

5 DAIRY PRODUCTS

Dairy products are rich in calcium, which is very effective in burning fat and even preventing its formation in the body .The amount of calcium in a person's body indicates how easily one gains fat. The more calcium present in your body , the easier it is to burn all the excess fat.

6 BERRIES

Berries, as we all know, are fibre-rich fruits. Raspberries are said to contain eight grams of fibre in a cup. Strawberries have lower sugar content than other fruits while also being rich in Vitamin C, which boosts metabolism in the body . Berries also have another component called pectin, which forces fats to release their fat cells.

7 GREEN VEGETABLES

Green vegetables have been tried and tested in their various health benefits. You should stop shrinking away from adding them to your diet as they have the power to reduce your waist size. Amongst the green vegetables, give special attention to spinach, cabbage and beans.Including a lot of salads into your everyday meal plan means getting closer to reducing the body's fat absorption.

Indian-American comedian steals the show at Trump-less, Hollywood-less WHCD

With President Donald Trump sending his regrets, the attention was no longer focused on an in-person roasting of the commanderin-chief at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) on March 31. The red carpet that once featured Oscar winners, TV stars and a few major league athletes barely turned heads.

However, one of the stars of the event turned out to be Indian-American standup comedian Hasan Minhaj, whose speech roasting the US President went viral on social media. Minhaj, 31, whose parents hail from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, made fun of Trump for his perceived proximity with the Russians, his attack on the media and several of his campaign rhetoric.

“We gotta address the elephant that's not in the room. The leader of our country is not here. And that's because he lives in Moscow, it is a very long flight. It'd be hard for Vlad to make it. Vlad can't just make it on a Saturday! As for the other guy , I think he's in Pennsylvania because he can't take a joke,“ Minhaj said amidst laughter from the audience. “Trump tweets at 3 AM sober. Who is tweeting at 3 am sober? Donald Trump, because it's 10 AM in Russia. Those are business hours,“ he added.

Minhaj also made fun of several top officials of the Trump administration. “Is Steve Bannon here? I do not see Steve Bannon. I do NOT see Steve Bannon. Not see Steve Bannon. Not-see Steve Bannon,“ he said. “Betsy DeVos couldn't be here, she's busy curating her collection of children's tears. Mike Pence wanted to be here tonight, but his wife would not let him because apparently one of you ladies is ovu lating. So good job, ladies. Because of you we couldn't hang out with Mike Pence,“ he added.

“Donald Trump is liar-inchief. Remember, you guys are public enemy number one. You are his biggest enemy . Journalists, ISIS, normal-length ties,“ Minhaj said as he went on to make fun of the media.“Fox News is here. I'm amazed you guys even showed up. How are you here in public? It's hard to trust you guys when you backed a man like Bill O'Reilly for years. But it finally happened. Bill O'Reilly has been fired. But then, you gave him a 25 million dollar severance package. Making it the only package he won't force a woman to touch,“ he joked.

“I know some of you are wondering, Hasan, how do you know so much about Fox News? Well, as a Muslim, I like to watch Fox News for the same reason I like to play Call of Duty .Sometimes, I like to turn my brain off and watch strangers insult my family and heritage,“ he added.

He said that the president would be tweeting about him at 3 am. “It's 11 pm in four hours, Donald Trump will be tweeting about how badly Nicki Minaj did at this dinner . And he'll be doing it completely sober. And that's his right. And I'm proud that all of us are here to defend that right, even if the man in the White House never would,“ Minhaj said.

GLUM RED CARPET, MORE FOCUS ON FREEDOM OF SPEECH AT THE EVENT

Instead of star power and in-person roast ing of the Prez, speakers at the dinner promoted press freedom and responsibil ity and challenged Trump's accusations of dishonest reporting. The stars of the night were Watergate reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who re counted what they learnt about journal ism from their reporting that helped lead to President Richard Nixon's resignation more than 40 years ago. “Like politicians and presidents sometimes, perhaps too fre quently, we make mistakes and go too far,'' Woodward said, “When that happens, we should own up to it. But the effort today to get this best ob tainable version of the truth is largely made in good faith. Mr President, the media is not `fake news.'''

THE FIRST PRESIDENT IN OVER 30 YEARS TO BOYCOTT THE GALA

Celebrating the first 100 days of his administration, Donald Trump attacked the media for misleading the people with “fake news“ as he skipped the “very boring“ White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) to become the first president in over 30 years to boycott the gala.

“I could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away from Washington's swamp, spending my evening with all of you with a much, much larger crowd and much, much better people. The media deserves a very big, fat, failing grade,“ Trump said sarcastically over the media's coverage of his achievements during his first 100 days in office. He said a large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling each other in a hotel ballroom in the nation's capital, referring to the annual black-tie dinner at a luxurious hotel, which was sold out to more than 2,600 guests, comprising who's who of nation's political players, and top journalists along with celebrities and diplomats.

“They are gathered together for the White House Correspondents' Dinner without the President,“ 70-year-old Trump told his cheering supporters at a campaign-style rally at Harrisburg in Pennsylvania, a state which played a critical role in his electoral victory last November.

He told supporters that he was keeping “one promise after another“, dismissing criticism as “fake news“ by “out of touch“ journalists.

NOW, A COURSE ON FACEBOOK WRITING. THE IDEA?

Wondering what to write on your Facebook wall when it incessantly asks you `What's on your mind'? Well, Delhi University (DU) has the answer. DU's English department has sent out a formal proposal to include `Facebook post writing' as part of its syllabus. In fact, colleges were expected to submit their feedback on the proposal by yesterday . Though the idea sounded strange to us initially , we asked students and professors in the city for their take. While not everyone has `meh'ed the idea, some feel that English Literature is not the best subject to include this course in...

WE NEED TO MOVE AHEAD WITH THE TIMES

From posting fun pictures and creating memes to sharing their views on current affairs, Facebook has become the go-to place for youngsters to express their opinions. No wonder then that the proposal has got the students excited.Satyendra Nair, second-year Arts student at SIES College says, “It seems like the calling of the future. Think of this as an additional component of letter writing in the 21st Century , and it all makes sense. Social media, by default, is not only part of our social life, but also a legitimate platform for keyboard activism. It would actually be refreshing to see fewer 'all caps' statuses that run into a redundant essay . It would be cool to see this course take shape and come to Mumbai University as well.“

The idea has piqued the millennials' interest, who like information on the go.“Considering the influence the platform has on youngsters, it's a good idea to teach them what to post and what not to post. It will also equip students to use the right language instead of everyday slang. If e-mail writing can be a part of our grammar books, why not a course on Facebook writing?“ asks Shivani Chunekar, a Class XII Arts student from Ramnarain Ruia College.

Many believe that social media is an effective platform for communication.Priya Joseph, assistant English professor at Mithibai College, says, “Today's generation needs quick, short, active and intelligent text rather than lengthy and over-descriptive passages. So, I think teaching students how to be crisp, but clear when putting forward their views on social media is a great idea. There are times when they post unsavoury things and get into trouble.Any help from the language point of view is welcome. We need to move ahead with changing times.“

Agnelo Menezes, Principal of St Xavier's College, adds, “Students of Arts and Mass Media in our college learn this as a part of the Effective Communication Skills subject in the first year. Social media has become an integral part of our communication and students should learn to use it effectively. I believe that social media articulation is an important subject for current times.“

Jhanvi K, journalist and a self-publishing author, says, “I publish my foursentence stories on the portal. If youngsters want to make writing their career, I think they should be taught how to put social media to good use.“

TEACH INTERNET ETHICS INSTEAD OF GRAMMAR

Students and professors think that this new course could make for an interesting lesson in social media ethics.Sarmishtha Roy , an English professor who coaches students for TOEFL and IELTS, says, “We live in an intolerant society and there have been far too many instances when an individual got shamed online for hisher posts. One of my students was forced to delete her profile after her views on the political scenario in our country offended fellow users and she was mercilessly trolled. If Facebook writing is going to be taught in colleges, I think the focus should be on internet ethics, respecting the views of others and cyber bullying.“

Aaditya Shivkumar, a Class XI Arts student from Ramnarain Ruia College, adds, “People are getting into trouble just for stating their opinions. Even though everyone in the country is entitled to have an opinion, no matter how unbiased you are and how generic your post is, someone will get offended. Ever since I read that people receive threats and even get arrested for sharing their opinions online, I have stopped posting on the portal. I think that along with language, the course should also teach you how to post without offending anyone.“

Kirti Bambak, a finalyear Arts student from Guru Nanak Khalsa College says, “There are no set rules when it comes to writing on the wall. So, many of us get excited and post whatever is on our mind that instant. I think students should be provided with a basic guidebook -how to express your views without sounding like a fanatic.“ The social media platform is as much about sharing pictures as it is about writing posts. Rijuta Walkar, an IT instructor, opines, “There have been so many instances where pictures that people post online have been misused. So, it's important that students be taught about security and privacy. Moreover, the portal is being used for many things like live-streaming suicide! I think the course should concentrate on the dos and don'ts that one has to keep in mind while using social media. Also, kids as young as 10 use the platform these days. So, it won't be a bad idea to include the course in schools as well.“

Mithila Naik-Satam, a third-year BA student from SIES College, says, “The advent of social media and its changing dynamics has its pros and cons. A course on cyber security , pertaining to identity thefts could be useful to students.“

LITERATURE IS NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE OF SUBJECT FOR THE COURSE

Purists feel English Literature may not be the best subject to include this course in. Padma Natraj, English teacher with a CBSE school, says, “English is a romantic language and its charm lies in its words. And social media language is no fun. Some of my students turn in answer papers where they've written `d' instead of `the' and `u' instead of `you'; SMS format is the bane of the language. I think teaching students how to write posts will be the last nail in English's coffin.“

However, professor Dr Jyoti Moghe, Vice Principal and HOD, English at Bhavan's College, feels that including the course for students is not a bad idea, but English is not the right subject.“Instead of literature, the course seems more relevant as a module in social media management.“

Ayan Banerjee, first-year student of Arts in Jai Hind College, agrees, “More students can avail of this course if it's not a part of English Literature. After all, social media is a way of life now.“

Meanwhile, the proposal is in its nascent stage, and we'll have to wait and watch to see if the course finds its way into the DU syllabus and at some point, in Mumbai University's syllabus as well.

Amitabh Bachchan sings Ganesha Aarti for Sarkar 3

Amitabh Bachchan is all set to return as Subhash Nagre in Sarkar 3, the third installment of the Ram Gopal Varma-directed franchise. One of the main highlights of the upcoming film is a soulful Ganpati aarti, rendered by Big B. The song, composed by Rohan Vinayak, will be launched today . Shot on a Mumbai beach, the track, set during Ganpati visarjan, features a larger-than-life multiheaded idol of the elephant God.

Talking about the song, Bachchan says, “There is something about the Ganesha Aarti that invokes great divinity; an emotion, that is rare and lasting. Sant Ramdas created this aarti in the 1600s in a raag (Raag Jogiya), that was befitting of great character and eminence. The words are in vernacular Marathi -a rarity for most other Hindu bhajans and devotional songs. Yet, the way the aarti has been structured, it cuts across all language barriers, if at all there are any .“ As for lending his voice to it, he adds, “I feel privileged and blessed, to have been asked to sing it for Sarkar 3. I sang the aarti for the Siddhivinayak Mandir at Prabhadevi, and when I discussed it with Ram Gopal Varma, I suggested that we do the same for the film as well. We have given it a different tone, but the sentiment, the emotion and the divinity remain in as much prominence as the original.“
