Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski topped off their time as NFL teammates with four Super Bowl wins — but their friendship goes way beyond what happens on the field.
Super Bowl LV, which took place in February 2021, was the former New England Patriots’ quarterback’s 10th championship appearance. As a Patriot, Brady’s team won six of his nine appearances.
As for the New York native, he played in four Super Bowl games with the Pats, three of which ended in wins. Each of his past Super Bowls were played with Brady — and their return to the big game in February 2021 resulted in another trophy for both of them — this time as Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brady shocked New England sports fans by announcing that he was leaving the Patriots for the Florida-based team in March 2020. He released a statement saying he would be “FOREVER A PATRIOT,” in a nod to his two-decade run with the team.
“To all my teammates, coaches, executives and staff, Coach [Bill] Belichick, [owner Robert Kraft] and the Kraft family and the entire organization, I want to say thank you for the past twenty years of my life and the daily commitment to winning and creating a winning culture built on great values,” he began.
In September 2020, he appeared on an episode of Dax Shepard‘s “Armchair Expert” podcast, where he revealed that it wasn’t easy to walk away from the team. “It’s a lot of emotions, a lot of memories,” he said.
Gronkowski was retired at the time. He announced his departure from the league in March 2019. “It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today,” he shared via Instagram.
Brady, for his part, reacted to the news with a message of support. He commented on the Instagram post, “Love you man!! The [greatest of all time]!! Couldn’t be a better person or teammate!!!!”
The Entourage guest star and University of Michigan alum aren’t just teammates, however. They have a special friendship that started in Massachusetts. They played together on the Patriots for eight years before being traded to the Buccaneers in 2020 — a move tight end told WEEI-FM wasn’t planned.
“As a player, you always want to see what it is like somewhere else. [I] thought of that before, definitely after playing nine years in the NFL and I also thought about it when I came out of retirement,” she said in April 2020, adding, “But no, we never really talked about that before. It kind of just happened. With my retirement and him hitting free agency, it just kind of lined up like that.”
Fans love their dynamic on and off the field, no matter what team they play for. “Best friend vibes like Gronk & Brady,” one person tweeted of the relationship. Another football fan wrote, “I’m an embittered Texans fan, but I have to admit, I still find the Brady-Gronk BFF thing kinda charming.”
When it came time for Brady to hang up his cleats for good in February 2022, Gronkowski was one of the many friends who cheered him on for his past success.
“Thank you for your dedication to the game, putting the team in the best possible position to win every year, all the record[s] that were broken, the Super Bowls, the memories, and your friendship through the last 12 years,” the University of Arizona alum tweeted at the time.

Besties for Life
Speaking on his special relationship with Brady in 2018, Gronkowski gushed to reporters about all the things he likes most about the famed quarterback.
"Just the way he prepares. His work ethic, the way he's just still going at his age," he said at the time. "Just still has a competitiveness to him every single time he steps out on the field. It's obviously an honor to be next to a quarterback like that in the huddle and it's really basically how he brings it every single day, no matter what kind of day it is."

No Takebacks?
After years of friendship, Gronkowski and Brady have undoubtedly gotten into some hijinks. Take, for example, the time Gronk took back Brady's Christmas gift and gave it to someone else he thought needed it more.
"I actually took his Bumpboxx [Bluetooth boombox] away from him and gave it to one of the cafeteria workers," he recalled in a 2020 ESPN interview. "I was like, 'Tom, you don't need the Bumpboxx.' And he agreed. I was like, 'You're a good guy.' And then he gave me sunglasses."

Giddy Up
Asked about his favorite off-field memory with Brady, Gronkowski shared this hilarious anecdote with ESPN reporter Jenna Laine: "I would just say going to the Kentucky Derby and seeing him take a shot. Just seeing his face after, like disgust, like, 'I'm putting this alcohol in my body.'"

Where You Go, I Go
After Brady was traded from the New England Patriots to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in early 2020, rumors swirled that he wanted to bring Gronkowski out of retirement to play with him again. The move happened in April 2020 and, following the announcement, Brady posted a video on Twitter along with a sweet message for his old pal.
"Time to run it back," he wrote — a nod to their time together on the Massachusetts-based sports team.

Put to The Test
Brady and Gronkowski put their friendship to the test in September 2020 — literally. The Buccaneers Twitter account shared a video of the two answering questions about each other and they absolutely nailed it.

Super Bowl Buds
After securing a spot in Super Bowl LV with an NFC Championship win, Gronkowski and Brady celebrated with "a big hug," according to the once-retired athlete.
"We just gave each other a big hug and said, 'This is what it's all about. This is why we came down here," Gronkowski revealed during an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Cordon in January 2020.

Retirement Jokes
In a Super Bowl LV commercial for T-Mobile in February 2021, Brady joked that he only switched from the Patriots to the Buccaneers because he misunderstood Gronk's advice during a spotty phone call. The ad ended with the University of Alabama alum deciding to come out of retirement to join the six-time Super Bowl champ. “Where are my football pants?” he shouted to his mom.

Champs Once Again
Gronkowski and Brady added another Lombardy trophy to their collections after the Tampa Bay Bucs won Super Bowl LV in February 2021. The duo previously won three Super Bowls together with the Patriots, with Brady winning three additional titles before Gronkowski joined the NFL.

“Tommy Boy!!! This football journey has been nothing short of special. He added: “If you commit even just 10 percent of what you committed to football in whatever you do next, you will be super duper successful. Witness greatness for many years and got to learn from the best to ever do it. You’re a legend and always will be. Thank you. Much love, Gronky.”

Back in Action
Brady reversed his retirement decision in March 2022, and the decision didn't come as a big surprise to his BFF. "When I was, you know, at the NFL Honors [in February], they were all asking me, 'How long? Do you think Tom's coming back?' Well, I didn't think it was gonna be that quick," Gronkowski told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "I mean I know the guy loves football like no other, you know? He lives and dies for it."
The athlete continued: "He's just an amazing player and he can still play! I mean, he can still throw the ball like no other. And I was like, 'Maybe he's just gonna take a year off or so.' But I knew he was gonna make it back eventually. I just didn't think it was gonna be that quick."
