Superhero flick The Avengers has made
Rs47 crore, making it the fourth highest collection for a Hollywood
movie at the Indian box-office.
“The success of the film in India proves that the aggressive marketing and distribution strategies that we adopt to release our big ticket Hindi movies can be applied to Hollywood blockbusters as well,” said Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director (studios) of Disney UTV, the company which marketed and distributed the film in India. In India, the film had been released on April 27 across 800 screens in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. In the global market, The Avengers had hit the billion (US) dollars mark in less than three weeks after its release. Buoyed by the success of The Avengers, Marvel Studios is planning several sequels, including ones for Captain America: The First Avenger (scheduled for release in 2014), Thor (scheduled for release in November 2013) and Iron Man (scheduled for release in May 2013). The Amazing Spider-Man is among many Hollywood films that have their eyes set on the lucrative Indian market this year. It is set to hit theatres on June 29, four days before its US opening. “Each of the films from the Spider-Man franchise has broken records on the day of its release in India,” said Kercy Daruwala, managing director of Sony Pictures, India. “We are confident that audiences will enjoy the new movie even more because they will be watching it a few days before the US audiences and also because it has an Indian connection.” The movie stars Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan as one of the villains. Other big Hollywood releases this year include Skyfall, the 23rd installment of the James Bond series, which will open in India in November, a week before its US release. The final installment of the Batman series The Dark Knight Rises, animation flicks like Madagascar 3 and Ice Age 4, and Total Recall are others. Daruwala added that this year, they have the biggest line-up that they have ever tried or tested, with a mix of action films, family films, comedies and dramas starring big actors. | ||

Bollywood cheers as Lok Sabha passes copyright bill
Bollywood cheers as Lok Sabha passes copyright bill
| ||
A collective cheer went up in Bollywood after the Lok Sabha gave its nod to the Copyright Bill. Lyricist and Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar told DNA that as of now song writers, singers and composers got royalty only one time for their creations as they surrendered the Copyright. But now authors will secure their royalties which can only be given to a legal heir. “When it comes to payment of royalties through other mediums, producers and authors must share that royalty in equal measure,” said human resource development minister Kapil Sibal while presenting the Bill in the Lok Sabha. The Bill was unanimously passed by the Lok Sabha with all parties supporting the cause to give creative artistes their dues whose benefits are allegedly cornered by the producers. The Bill makes it mandatory for broadcasters to pay royalty to the owners of the copyright each time their creation is broadcast. It also bans persons from bringing out cover versions of any literary, dramatic or musical work for five years from the first recording of the original creation. “This new law will secure the royalties of writers, composers, musicians etc which they had to legally surrender so far,” said Akhtar, who has been the most vocal amongst Bollywood personalities in demanding amendment to the Copyright Act enacted in 1957. Sibal said that since the new law ensures that authors will remain owners of the copyright, it will help them live a good life when they grow old. “I remember when Ustaad Bismillah Khan came to me and said that he did not have money to pay his rent. I cut a cheque for him for one whole year so that he could pay his rent... I have known of artists who could not pay their hospital bills because the producers would not part with their royalty. The time has come to correct all these things,” Sibal said. Lata Mangeshkar, who had taken up the issue of singers’ royalty back in the 1960s, expressed hope that the new law will regulate the rampant copyright infringement on TV, radio and internet. “ I see my songs being sung on television by other singers while music companies are busy coming up with newer compilations of my songs,” she said, adding that there was no easy way of stopping such practices. “Now that the bill has been passed, how will they control the music companies,” Mangeshkar wondered. |

After reneging on a contract to perform live in Mumbai, Rahman’s manager has been slapped with a legal notice
|
Oscar-winner AR Rahman was scheduled to perform his first live concert in Mumbai on Sunday. Instead, his concert manager has been served a legal notice for allegedly reneging on a contract to perform, by Miles Ahead Multimedia Private Limited (MMPL).
A complaint of Criminal Breach of Trust (Sec 406), Cheating to the tune of Rs1.10 crore (Sec 420), and Misrepresentation and False Declarations (Sec 199) under the Indian Penal Code have also been filed at Kasaravadavli police station in Thane where the MMPL office is located. MMPL director Hira Bulani told DNA that he had been dreaming of watching his idol in action since late February, when he heard of the maestro’s desire to perform live in Mumbai. “Little did I know that my dream to get the artiste to perform in Mumbai would be set afire, just like Rahman’s tweet when Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods got into trouble.” (‘Another dream on fire’, Rahaman had tweeted). On discovering that Deepak Gattani’s M/s Rapport Productions Pvt Ltd coordinated all of Rahman’s live performances, Bulani contacted him. “After several rounds of discussions, Gattani confirmed a live stage show with Rahman and a host of singers, musicians and other artistes. Relying on this, my company entered into an agreement dated March 7 to host the concert in Mumbai on May 20,” Bulani told DNA. Consequently, Gattani sought a security. “My company issued cheques of Rs90 lakh dated March 19, till the time we were able to find event sponsors,” said Bulani. “Once the Brabourne stadium was decided as the venue, a technical team from Rapport Productions went to inspect it on March 31.” By April 6, the sponsors had been finalised, and Gattani reaffirmed his consent. MMPL began their full-scale preparations. “It was then that I got worried as neither Rahman nor Gattani were agreeing to meet me. My fears were proven right when Gattani told me that Rahman wouldn’t come for the concert,” he said. “As if to add insult to injury, Gattani mailed me to say he had already signed a contract for another show on May 26 at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai.” Having made all arrangements for the concert, and unable to retract without huge losses, Bulani says he made frantic attempts to contact Gattani and Rahman but they did not respond. “Even when Rahman was in town for a private concert at NCPA, I tried meeting him to explain the expenditure towards the booking of the CCI Club Lawns, advance payment to vendors, inviting CCI members through handbills as well as my team’s salary. But I was not allowed to meet him at all,” Bulani points out; saying all he wants is justice. The Mozart from Madras, who is in the US, could not be reached for comment and his manager Noell James said it would be difficult to reach him. Deepak Gattani insisted, “The contract was null and void soon after signing since Bulani could not pay up.” When asked about the cheques given for security he said, “All this is beyond me. Once I get the notice I will look into the matter. Till I get the notice and read it, I can’t say anything.” |
Arjun and Parineeti's sizzling onscreen chemistry in Hindi movie Ishaqjaade
Arjun and Parineeti's sizzling onscreen chemistry
Besides the enormous buzz created by the upcoming movie Ishaqzaade, what many are oblivious about is that, the title of the movie was not the first choice.
The first title for Ishaqzaade was 'Tewar' which means attitude. Though the film depicts attitude, the team thought over it for a couple of days and started having a second thought for the title of the film.
They then came to a conclusion that its not just attitude but the combination of a love story and attitude, thus the film is now titled as ISHAQZAADE as we now know. It was however a collective decision taken by the team after a few meetings took place.
The entire team loved the new title and felt it perfectly fit the film and also it precisely justified the nature of the film.
One of the leading light of Ishaqzaade, Parineeti Chopra has already swept mostly all awards as a debutant for her previous film. Actor Arjun Kapoor, who is making a debut with the film, will be seen opposite Parineeti.
Actress Priyanka Chopra is excited about her cousin Parineeti's forthcoming movie "Ishaqzaade" and urges fans to watch the flick.
When Parineeti tweeted about Priyanka's upcoming movie "Teri Meri Kahaani" saying, "'Teri Meri Kahani' looks super fun!! Go mimi didi (Priyanka)," Priyanka replied saying, "Thank you Tishu!!! So does 'Ishaqzaade' !Yay! I'm so excited! May 11th coming up! Watch out world.. for my sister(sic)!!
Yash Raj Films' (YRF) "Ishaqzaade", which also marks the debut of filmmaker Boney Kapoor's son Arjun will release May 11, tells the story of two fiery characters and their fight for power and supremacy.
Sonam Kapoor tweeted, "My brother arjuns trailer of ishaq-zaade comes out in a few minutes. Its gonna be brilliant. Congrats parineeti".
Riteish Deshmukh tweeted, "Blown away by Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra just saw da promo of Issakzade - way to go guys."
Uday Chopra tweeted, "One of the awesomest trailers from YRF, even if I say so myself check out Arjun Kapoor Parineeti Chopra in Ishaqzaade"

What does one do when love strikes during times of war? And make no mistake. Elections time in a small dusty town of Uttar Pradesh is akin to war. Guns are fired randomly at enemies, real or imagined. Enemies fall to the ground. Morals lie crushed under heels. And finer feelings are buried under a rubble of trouble.
Into this town, here named Almora, enters love on silent feet. Well, maybe not so silent. "Ishaqzaade" is a very noisy film. The hero Parma (debutant Arjun Kapoor) is an uncouth animal, whose disgusting habits include kidnapping the town's nautch girl from a rival's party to dance at his grandfather's wedding. Later, his moral temperature dips to an all-time low when he takes loathsome revenge on the girl he loves to hate.
As the Muslim girl Zoya, Parineeti Chopra fills the screen with a tempestuous charm. Naturally spontaneous and vivacious, she reminds you of the early Jaya Bhaduri. Her character is a sharp-shooter with a tongue to match. And when she gets brutally compromised by Parma, she reacts like a wild cat raging against the promised full-cream milk that curdled when she was not looking.
Habib Faisal, who made the mellow, mild-mannered middle-class comedy "Do Dooni Chaar" about a college professor's dream of buying a car, here shows a completely unexpected side to his cinematic vision. The landscape he paints in Almora is so volatile and violent, you pray for atonement for these characters.
The lovers don't exchange chaste glances and furtive kisses. They embrace passionately and smooch each other's lips off. And when they make love, it seems they are waging war on the world. Full-blooded, voluptuous and eminently earthy, "Ishaqzaade" is a pickled, aromatic roller-coaster ride through the badlands where blazing guns mean families are at one another's throats.
The first-half of the narration builds up to an engrossing case for Parma to inflict his uncouth and aggressive malevolence on Zoya. The confrontation scenes between the two, written with the right amount of zing and sting, are first-rate. Remarkably the adversaries-turned-lovers keep drawing attention to each other's religion without mincing words. The two religions are almost thrown at one another as taunts. Riot or wrong, who can tell?
What Faisal wants to say, and we would be better off if we pay heed, is -- it is imperative to address the Hindi-Muslim divide headlong, or else blood would continue to be spilt each time two people from different communities 'dare' to love each other.
"Don't even think of it. An Indo-Pak war will break out," the Muslim girl warns the Hindu boy. And then proceeds to break the self-imposed rule with a rush of rebellion and passion that seems to replicate the flow of adrenaline in the virile script.
"Ishaqzaade" is written in blood, dipped in passion, and shot in vivid colours of life, strife and other bitter embers of the communal fire. The director constantly attempts to bring alive the cluttered milieu of a lawless north Indian town. Faisal succeeds to a remarkable degree.
His characters speak an easily recognisable language from Uttar Pradesh's heartland where even daughters are taught to fire a gun before they learn the alphabet. The supporting characters don't fake it even for a second.
Many scenes convey warmth and empathy without a jot of self-consciousness. The characters are all played by unknown local UP actors who are born to the milieu. The director builds a believable arc of love and revenge. His lovers are so well-conceived on paper, it would have taken two truly idiotic actors to ruin their characters.
Luckily, Parineeti and Arjun are anything but incapable actors. They imbue the violent ambience with their own peculiar chemistry.
The bloodshed never stops, and the action is relentless. Hemant Chaturvedi's cinematography creates a world that is real and at the same time, highly cinematic.
There are many reasons why "Ishaqzaade" is a remarkable film. It enters the killing fields of Uttar Pradesh. It chases down our two protagonists and then watches them get into a crisis with no end. In the end, we are looking at two young vibrant people whom we love because they love one another irrespective of the differences.
This is not a film which offers a pretty love story with gentle love songs. Even the music (by Amit Trivedi) sounds like a war cry. As for Parineeti and Arjun, never mind the destiny that lies in store for their characters in this film. They are here to stay.
It’s a dream come true! …says actor Gul Panag about working with filmmaker Rajat Kapoor
It’s a dream come true!
…says actor Gul Panag about working with filmmaker Rajat Kapoor
Actor Gul Panag currently has her hands full with two projects - on one hand she is busy promoting her upcoming film Fatso and on the other, she is shooting for the sequel of Ab Tak Chappan. About Fatso, Gul says that she had always wanted to work with actor Rajat Kapoor and her dream has come true. “Rajat is such a fun and talented person to work with. Also, I know Ranvir Shorey and Purab Kohli and we are a bunch of people who come from the same space and think similarly in terms of shooting a film,” says Gul.
Talking about the film, Gul says, “It’s a fun film about five friends and their lives. It is also a story of three boys trying to woo this girl, the object of their desires.”
Apart from the film, Gul is also excited about actor Chitrangda’s recent remark on Gul being the fittest actor in Bollywood. Gul is all smiles as she says, “It’s absolutely true! Thanks Chitrangda for saying that, but I should also return the compliment. Hats off to her over the way she manages her work, her kid and shuffles between two cities. Having said that I believe that one should always stay fit. Three important aspects of staying fit are strength, endurance and flexibility. Having six-packs doesn’t mean you have endurance.” So what’s her fitness mantra? “Combination of running and tennis. I believe that if you still have the same energy that you had in your college days, then you are perfectly fit and healthy. If not, then you have to work towards it.”

The actor reveals his reason for being super-choosy when it comes to brand endorsements
| ||
“We are actors and I believe in selling talent, not my name. Back then, I had taken up that brand, because I felt that it was an extension of myself,” says Anil. “I have nothing against actors who do more commercials than films. But I personally believe that if I’m a film actor, then acting in films is what I should be doing in that capacity,” explains the actor, adding, “If I am choosy about my films, I’m super choosy about the brands. Money has never been my driving force. So even if I do choose to endorse a product, it will only be something that I’m personally convinced about.” Anil may not want to be seen doing too many ads, but he has never shied away from taking up projects that are associated with social causes. “I am all for a social cause. If I can help spread awareness about a socially relevant issue then I’m all for it,” shares the actor. The actor whose recent release Tezz saw him as a Brit cop, will be playing a cop again in Shootout At Wadala and the international film Cities, and then again in Race 2. “Yes, it’s exciting to play a cop in back-to-back films. I think it’s really challenging to make one cop character look completely different from the other and I look forward to it,” says Anil. |

World acclaimed DJ Fatboy Slim gets candid before his maiden visit to India this weekend
Acclaimed British DJ and record producer Fatboy Slim’s (aka Norman Cook) upcoming maiden India tour this weekend — Gurgaon (May 5) and Bangalore (May 6) — has gotten everyone kicked, including the DJ himself! Ask him the secret of his success, and the Praise You hitmaker credits it to bizarre superstitious rituals that he follows before stepping on stage. “I DJ barefoot and put all my records in order before I go on stage. I sort them by beats per minute. They start slow and get faster,” says Cook. He, unlike his ilk, totally shuns the web. “I’m not a big fan of computer interaction. I like going into a shop and talking to the assistant, joking around or whatever. I don't like to buy things online, that’s really strange to me.” And there’s more:
Tell us what’s in store for your Indian fans?
Big show, big visual production, big tunes... Not over commercial, but accessible for all. Quite tough, but a lot of fun!
What are you most excited about on your maiden trip here?
It’s all new territory for me. I’ll be making new friends, and will try to soak up as much of India as I can in my limited time. I’m excited most of all about turning on a new generation in our style of dance.
What do you plan to indulge in here?
Indian food. I’m very interested in tasting authentic Indian food after growing up on the English version!
How aware are you of Bollywood and its music?
I have seen Bollywood movies (not a huge fan though). But I certainly do like the music.
Any particular Indian city on your wish list?
I will be in and out for the gigs, sadly. No time for sightseeing, I’ve heard Bangalore is known as the Silicon City of India, so that sounds interesting. But I’ll come in from Dubai and then I’m off to America.

Meanwhile, Raveena pulls a plug on old rivalries
The actor seems to be on a bonding spree with her former rivals — first, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, and now, actor Karisma Kapoor
‘There are no permanent friends or enemies in the film industry’ and proving this adage once again are actors Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. The two one-time rivals are the latest in a long string of B-Towners to have buried their decade-old hatchet that goes back to the time when they were the reigning queens in Bollywood.
According to Bolly lore, both Karisma and Raveena had been at loggerheads for over a decade now and the alleged rivalry stemmed from the competition the two gave each other at the BO. There was also buzz in the ‘90s that the two were apparently involved in a catfight over actor Ajay Devgn. Back then, it was also said that the two went to great lengths to avoid each other completely and it was this takkar that made them bitter professional rivals too. So, it came as quite a shocker for the onlookers to see the two actors kiss and make up recently when they bumped into each other at a do hosted by Nita and Mukesh Ambani. In fact, the two were rather cordial to each other and spent several minutes chatting away. “The two looked rather comfortable in each other’s presence. Raveena was with hubby Anil Thadani, and the three talked for quite a long time. In fact, Raveena even wished Karisma all the best for her upcoming film,” said an onlooker.
But according to sources, this isn’t the first time that the two met socially. An insider reveals that the two have been bumping into each other quite often as their kids go to the same school. “They have been quite cordial to each other. Guess, over the years, each of them has moved on in life and it was just futile holding on to old grudges,” the insider reveals.
Meanwhile, it’s not just Karisma that Raveena has been bonding closely with. The actor has also been strengthening her ties with actor Shilpa Shetty-Kundra. The two actors, who had put aside their differences, more than a year back have increasingly been bonding over cricket and babies. “Raveena has been doling out a lot of mommy tips to the pregnant Shilpa. Also she and Shilpa’s hubby Raj Kundra have been regularly tweeting each other over cricket. Looking at them, it would be hard to fathom that they were once erstwhile rivals,” adds the source.

Bromancing in Bollywood
Actors Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor seem to be the new best friends in town as the two have been spotted hanging out together of late
Whoever said two actors cannot be best friends will soon have to eat their own words. Though this holds true for most female actors, their male counterparts seem to be more chilled out and easy going, especially the younger lot of actors. While there are stories about heroines not getting along, actors usually don’t get written about for their off-screen friendship or enmity. And now, buzz is that actors Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor have become very friendly and are often spotted hanging out together. The two actors who struck a chord with each other when they did an act together at the Zee Cine Awards in Macau in January this year, have stayed in touch ever since.
Elaborating on how the two got friendly with each other, a source close to them reveals, “Ranbir and Shahid, both get along famously well. The two actors didn’t know each other until they met in Macau. The duo travelled together, were put up at the same hotel and of course rehearsed for their acts together. They were spending so much time with each other, that they struck a chord and have stayed in touch ever since. Also, Shahid helped Ranbir during the awards as he was performing on stage for the first time. Shahid admires Ranbir for the actor he is, and they are often seen discussing work and other stuff. The fact that they are of the same age group helps them connect even better. Usually their conversations are centered around gadgets, gizmos and automobiles.”
Since the awards show, the two have apparently made it a point to keep in touch with each other. Shahid who is currently at home relaxing and reading scripts has been often spotted at Ranbir’s bungalow in Bandra. The duo apparently also hangs out at Shahid’s new bachelor pad. Since they have a common friend circle, they are often seen hanging out together.
