Hollywood movies inspired by short films

With short filmturned-movie Whiplash joining the Oscar race, we look at recent and upcoming short films adapted into fulllength features
At a time when securing funding for independent films is more elusive than ever, shorts are back as the calling card for filmmakers. Some incredible films even compete on a wider scale at film festivals. One such movie in the Oscar race this year is Whiplash, which began as a 17-minute short by same director, Damien Chazelle. He belongs to a recent wave of filmmakers, including Destin Cretton (Short Term 12) and Shawn Christensen, who've discovered that the only way to direct the films they want is to make them first on a smaller scale. >> THE BABADOOK (2014)
The title refers to a spooky pop-up book owned by a child who insists to his mother that their house is haunted. Running at nine minutes in black-and-white, Monster (2005) is a condensed fairytale version of The Babadook that makes time for jump scares, creeping menace and motherly love.
>> WHIPLASH (2014)
Damien Chazelle's jazz-inflected drama began as a 17-minute short film that was able to attract funding and be reworked for a featurelength version. His short won the jury award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He then went on to turn the vignette into a full-length feature about a jazz drummer at an elite music school, which is a heavy contender at the upcoming Oscars, including the Best Film category .
>> THIS IS THE END (2013)
Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen starred in a 10-minute short film Jay And Seth Versus The Apocalypse in 2007 about two friends -also named Jay and Seth -arguing while trapped in their apartment during a calamitous doomsday event. The short film was originally intended to play only in the film festival circuit, but its basic plot was expanded into This Is The End, directed by Rogen and Evan Goldberg and starring James Franco.
>> SHORT TERM 12 (2013)
Before American director Destin Daniel Cretton's 2013 drama Short Term 12, there was an even shorter Short Term 12, created when he was at film school. Shot in three days, the original is also a loose, handheld portrayal of a care worker's tough experience at a foster home. While the tone and setting are the same, the short film has a female protagonist.
MAMA (2013)
The Spanish-Canadian horror film stars Jessica Chastain as a woman who finds herself becoming foster mother to a pair of young girls who have spent years living in the woods after the murder of their parents. It is based on director Andres Muschetti's own career-making short, a three-minute piece that appears to be shot in one single take.
FRANKENWEENIE (2012)
Tim Burton's 3D stop-motion animation film Frankenweenie is based on his own 1984 live-action short film of the same name. It was produced for TV before he became famous. Unlike the animated 2012 version, the 1984 one is a live-action oddity with the dog (a zombified mutt) dressed up in a cheap blanket. Ironically , when Burton turned in the original, he was sacked for producing 30 minutes that couldn't be broadcast to children.
OCULUS (2014)
Traumatised siblings Kaylie and Tim Russell decide to take on an ancient, cursed mirror that was responsible for the death of their parents when they were children. The feature was inspired by writer-director Mike Flanagan's 2006 short, Oculus: Chapter 3 The Man With The Plan. Filmed in just four days, the short originally set out to be an anthology.
UPCOMING SHORT-FILMS-TURNED-FEATURES
CHAPPIE (2015)
South African director Neill Blomkamp's upcoming film Chappie is supposed to be a blend of sci-fi and comedy , with another starring role for his District 9 and Elysium collaborator, Sharlto Copley . Recently, the director let it slip that the film is based on his 2003 short film Tetra Vaal. It poses the question, `What if we could build a system', essentially a robot, `to help police' and `developing nations'. The film features a robot prodigy who is kidnapped at birth and gets adopted by a strange family .
PIXELS (2015)
Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Josh Gad star in director Chris Columbus' sci-fi action comedy , based on a 2010 French animated short by Patrick Jean. In the film, aliens invade Earth after misinterpreting video feeds of classic arcade games as a threat. The President (James) calls on his childhood friend, Jules Brenner (Sandler), an arcade champturned-home theatre installer, to assist in saving the planet.
FOXED! (2015)
Director James Stewart's stopmotion animated short Foxed! will be redeveloped as a feature film with an accompanying virtual reality experience for Oculus Rift platform. In the short, children are being kidnapped by foxes and forced to work in mines. The feature-length Foxed! will continue the story of Emily and the other children who have been kidnapped and must work together to escape and save their town.
FUTURE RELIC (2016)
Juliette Lewis, Ethan Suplee, Lukas Haas and Ronald Gutman will join actor-producer James Franco in the feature film version of Future Relic, an expansion of a nine-minute short, written and directed by artist Daniel Arsham. In the eco film, which may or may not have dialogue, Earth's climate in the near future has become unstable and scientists attempt to save the world with an experiment. The second chapter in the short film saga, Future Relic 02, features Franco as a worker who spends his days underground indexing and destroying objects from the civilisation that was.
HENCHMEN (2016)
Will Ferrell and Adam McKay were so impressed with last year's animated short film Henchmen: Ill Suited that they've become `creative collaborators' on what will eventually be simply titled Henchmen. The short film tells the story of a hapless janitor working at the bad guy museum of Supervillain City who stumbles upon a super suit and creates a big mess. The feature-length film will build off it.
