Stella Adler
American actress, director, and acting teacher (1901-1992).
Born in New York City to Jacob and Sarah Adler, stars in New York's Yiddish theater.
Made her acting debut in 1906 in one of her father's productions.
A member of the American Laboratory Theater in the 1920s.
Co-founded The Group Theatre in 1931 and was influenced by the ideas of Constantin Stanislavsky.
Briefly studied with Stanislavsky in the Soviet Union in 1934.
Returned to The Group Theatre and performed with the company.
Taught her modified version of the Stanislavsky method, which emphasized the use of imagination as the basis of acting technique.
Spent a stint in Hollywood from 1937 to 1942, where she acted in films and was a producer at MGM.
Returned to New York, resumed theatrical acting and directing, taught at the New School, and later founded her own acting school in 1949.
Her students included Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Warren Beatty, and many other performers.
Exerted a profound influence on American acting.
