A Hollywood touch to high-octane action

Nikhil Advani’s D-Day, which revolves around bringing a dreaded don from Pakistan to India, boasts of some high-octane action sequences. The stunts have been conceptualised and choreographed by Tom Struthers and John Street, who have worked in Hollywood hits like The Dark Knight Rises and Inception.
Says actor Arjun Rampal, “It’s intelligent and calculative action. Every actor was specifically trained, keeping in mind the character he/she played. It was an energising and intriguing experience.”
All the actors were trained in various hand-to-hand combat skills as well as martial arts like kickboxing. In fact, training sessions started a month before the shoot.
Irrfan, who plays Wali Khan, an undercover agent, says it’s the first time he has done serious action. “The training schedule was an eyeopener. A lot of attention was
given to details that are often overlooked. For example, the right way to hold a gun with an injured arm,” he explains.
Apart from Arjun and Irrfan, the film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Shruti Haasan, Akash Dahiya, Nassar, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Sree Swara.
The plot also played a major role in deciding the action sequences. Tom says, “The movie has a patriotic element to it. So, it was essential that it reflected in the body language of the actors, especially in the stunt scenes. They were taught to fight like soldiers.”
Producer-director Nikhil agrees. “Action is a vital part of the screenplay. Instead of going for regular, gravity-defying stunts, I wanted to keep them as authentic as possible. Tom and John have worked on some of the most awe-inspiring sequences in Hollywood.”
D-Day, produced by DAR Motion Pictures and Emmay Entertainment, and co-produced by Essel Vision Productions, releases July 19.
