A BIG FAT DESI WEDDING!

A BIG FAT DESI WEDDING!

What happens when the US-returned daughter of a Punjabi father and Bengali mother, wants to marry a Muslim boy in an extravagant Bollywood-style wedding? You will find the answer in Ashvin Gidwani Production’s (AGP) latest play, Blame It On Yashraj (BIOY).
After the huge success of blockbuster shows like History Of India and Two To Tango Three To Jive, AGP is back with this outand-out family comedy. Written and directed by Bharat Dabholkar, BIOY, a two-act play, revolves around the big fat Indian wedding madness. It also commemorates the comeback of Bharat and Ashvin Gidwani on stage after a long hiatus.
    Encompassing an ensem
ble cast of well-known stage and TV artistes like Ananth Mahadevan, Jayati Bhatia, Anchal Sabharwal, Punit Tejwani, Gaurav Sharma, Palash Dutta, Smita Hai and Neel Gagdani; foot tapping musical score of Louiz Banks; Bollywood jhatkas by choreographer Hormuzd Khambata and vibrant costumes by designer Manali Jagtap, BIOY promises to be an enthralling laugh riot with generous dose of glamour, music, dance, comedy and emotions. It has all the actors dancing along with professional dancers — very ‘Indian wedding’ and of course, very Bollywood.
The inherent humour in the script, touches all socially relevant issues and happenings and makes it interesting. BIOY really is a
slice of our lives. It pokes fun at our prejudices our peculiar and almost feverish behaviour while planning a wedding — the theme, the invitee list, the wedding trousseau, the menu, the décor and the extravagant gifts.
The play is a two-hour, comical portrayal of both families caught up in the whirlwind of their childre’s wedding which gets bigger and bigger as the D-day arrives. Ananth Mahadevan, who plays the bride’s father says, “BIOY
has a Broadway, operatic feel.”
Writer and director Bharat says, “It’s great working with Ashvin after so long. We have always shared the same passion for theatre entertainment value, this
time heightened with glamourous dance sequences, choreography with gorgeous dancers, a music score that goes from Broadway jazz to Bollywood parodies and innovative LED backdrop that would change with every mood and every scene. Hence, allin-all, BIOY is an absolute extravaganza that Indian theatre hasn’t seen for the longest time.”
‘Blame It On Yashraj’ will be staged at Sophia Bhabha Auditorium on Sunday, 17th February 2013 at 6.30 pm. Bookings at: www.bookmyshow.com
