Emraan Hashmi may have proven to be one of the most commercially viable actors, ever since he hit jackpot at the BO with his film Murder. But it’s taken him close to a decade to enjoy the kind of acceptability by the industry at large, that he is finally getting. Though his earlier films did cement his position as one of the most profitable actors, they not only saw him earn the tag of a serial kisser, but also got him bracketed as the crass-mass hero in the rung of mid-budget films that were high on business, but low on family ratings. And despite several self-admitted attempts, the actor found it hard to break away from the tag as well as gain the respectability among niche filmmakers, who were wary of his sex-boy image.
“It’s not like Emraan wasn’t trying to break out of the mould, but as an actor he can only pick and choose from the films coming his way and he did. He was not happy with the serial-kisser tag either, but he’d learnt to accept it, because there was no choice,” said a source close to the actor. However, with his recent string of hits in the niche segments, things finally seem to be looking up for the actor, who will be completing a decade in the industry next year.
Industry insiders point out that it was Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai that proved to be a turning point for Emraan, immediately followed by Madhur Bhandarkar’s comedy Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji which he then topped with Milan’s The Dirty Picture. “Over the years, Emraan has proven to have a rather high hit ratio, but he was never in the running with the top stars, until recently. But now he’s considered for roles and films that he would not be a contender for till a few years back,” agree trade analysts.
Pointing out to the films coming his way today, a filmmaker says, “There was a time when none of the A-list heroines or director would want to work with him, but now all that has changed. He is doing a film with Bipasha Basu. A film with Dibakar Banerjee and Abhay Deol… His star ratings have certainly increased.” The filmmaker adds that he’s now being looked at as an actor, beyond his kisser image. “His films with Milan and Madhur have earned him the respectability from the industry that was missing till now and he’s finally crossing over to the A-listers side. His commercial value has shot up for sure,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
