The first release of the year 2012 was Players, a true-blue Abbas Mustan adrenaline pumping action film, which pretty much set the tone for the kind of the films lined up for this year. By the end of January, debutant director Karan Malhotra’s remake of the cult classic Agneepath with actors Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt created a record of sorts at the box-office. But it’s not going to stop at that. This year, too, is going to see one of Bollywood’s favourite themes dominating the screens.

The gangsta genre came into its own when filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma made the film Satya on the underworld scene in Mumbai 14 years back. It was a huge hit and went on to become a cult film that filmmakers often takes references from while making a film on the underbelly of city.
However, there’s been a renewed interest in the genre, especially with the success of filmmaker Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai in the recent past. The sequel, which has actor Akshay Kumar taking over from where actors Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi left, is one of the most looked forward to film this year. Akshay, who’ll apparently play gangster Dawood Ibrahim in the film, had earlier said, “I haven’t done a negative role for quite some time now. And I want to do one such role now. Besides, I love action and I have a couple of films lined up as well in that genre,” he said.
Talking about his love for mafia films, Luthria had said, “My film is not a biopic on anybody’s life. It is one of those films that people will always watch because such themes were popular in the 70s and 80s. It has the right mix of history, entertainment and fight sequences that draws the audiences to the theatre.”
Another much awaited film in the year 2012 is Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, which is about the coal mafia in Dhanbad (Jharkhand) and is reportedly inspired by the story of Bihar politician Surajbhan Singh, who was convicted for murder in 2008. In Zilla Ghaziabad, the plot is loosely based on a gang war between two rival groups of Satbir Gurjar and Mahender Fauji (a series of real-life incidents) which happened in Ghaziabad.
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout at Wadala with actor John Abraham will dramatise the first ever registered encounter by the Mumbai police, where gangster Manya Surve was shot dead, which took place in Mumbai in 1982.
