Fiction gets reality bytes

It’s not just tear-jerking family sagas, but crime-based fiction shows inspired by real incidents that are also raking in the TRPs

If you thought that only fictional shows and soaps revolving around saas-bahu sagas are widely popular on TV, then you might just be mistaken. As these days it’s the fiction-based crime shows which have been inspired by real life incidents that are consistently keeping the audience glued on. Though this genre of shows has always been quite popular since the early days with shows like Byomkesh Bakshi, Karamchand — that saw these detectives busting criminals in a dramatic and thrilling climax at the end of each episode — over a period of time these crime-based shows have now become more realistic in their storylines. What’s more the shows are said to be doing quite well on the popularity charts as well. After Hrs speaks to experts from the TV industry to find out what’s making these shows such hits.

“Real life crimes, which the public is already following, garner instant attention of the viewers, so chances of an increase in the TRPs is definitely there,” says producer Nikhil Sinha. However, he adds that these issues should be dealt with sensitively. “Real life based issues need to be woven into fiction programs with a lot of sensitivity and facts should not be tampered with. Also not everyone wants to see what they know already and it depends on the nature of the incident which one intends to weave into fiction,” he adds.
Virendra Shahaney, fiction head, programming, Sony, feels that the realism and thrill factor makes these shows popular. “Crime based shows have always been a refreshing break for the audience from the daily soaps as they have a new story in each episode. Also with real incidents projected in these shows, makes audience aware of the reason behind a crime and to be cautious. For instance shows like CID and Adaalat or even a regular show like Phulwa which includes a plot based on a real incident surely appeal to one and all. Inclusion of Real life crime stories makes our shows socially relevant,” says Shahaney.
“Real life incidents be it crime related or other when brought into fiction programs surely up the curiosity and relatiblity of audience. What will fetch TRPs is unpredictable, but the objective should be to give the best content with the objective of entertainment,” adds producer Siddharth Tewary of Phulwa.
