GULABI IS THE ITEM GIRL IN OUR FILM

...says Vishal Bhardwaj about the pink cow in his film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola

    Director Vishal Bhardwaj introduces the characters of his upcoming film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola:
    The film is a comedy set in Haryana. Even though people from there are flat-faced, they have a serious and strange sense of humour.
MATRU: While on a recce in Haryana, we were looking to name our three characters when I saw a hoarding saying ‘Vakeel Rajesh Matru’. From there, Matru, played by Imran Khan, got his name.
BIJLEE: Bijlee has always been used in the past as a name for a girl who is like an item number. In the story, there is a subtle problem of electricity in the village. So the backstory of the film is that her mother, by bringing the first generator in the village, brought electricity there and named her daughter Bijlee.
MANDOLA: We found that a number of people in Haryana attach the name of their village behind their own names. Mandola in Haryana sounded interesting and so we named Pankaj Kapur’s character Mandola.
GULABI: She is a character in the film and is our item girl. She is a pivotal character who changes the life of the characters when she makes her entry. While she does not dance in the film she smiles throughout.
STORY: Matru’s family has been serving Mandola for generations. Mandola, who has studied in Oxford and owns limousines, has chosen to live in his village. His problem is that he is an alcoholic. After getting drunk he becomes a villagewala and when he is sober, he becomes a materialistic man. The film is a contrast of the limousine and the desi sharab ka theka. I wanted to bring this madness of India where a limousine gets stuck in a small alley by going a little over the top and being a bit edgy. Matru and Bijlee are the same age and have grown up together. Matru studies LLB in Delhi University but does not get a job and comes back to his village to take up his family profession of serving the Mandola family. Also, he loves Mandola’s daughter, Bijlee, a total rebel with tattoos all over her body and does all those things that are forbidden and scandalous in a village. For instance, she jumps into the pool in a bikini. Bijlee later goes to Oxford to study and falls in love with Arya Babbar’s character.
    Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, presented by Fox Star Studios and produced by Vishal Bhardwaj Pictures, releases January 11.
