WHY HOLLYWOOD OUTSOURCES VFX TO INDIA

What gives India the advantage over other countries providing the same services

Aslew of the biggest blockbusters to hit Hollywood have Indian visual effects (VFX) artists to thank. It is a lesser-known fact that several Indian VFX and animation studios are working on Hollywood films. According to the FICCI-KMPG Report 2012, “The cost of animation production in India is one-fourth of that in North America and about 35% lower than countries such as Korea and Philippines.” Visual effects designer V Srinivas Mohan, the man behind the technical wizardry in Robot, feels that while Hollywood studios see India as a destination for cheap labour, and most Indian companies do low-end jobs, studios prefer us for two other reasons — quality of the work and the ability to communicate. “Even companies that do low-end jobs have a strong quality control process which is why they repeatedly offer jobs to Indian companies. Also, the artists in countries like China and Philippines, are not as good in English, making communication a problem,” he explains, adding that it’s one reason why foreign VFX studios have branches here.
