Pi’s visually amazing: James ‘Avatar’ Cameron

Hollywood’s 3D guru James Cameron has been raving about Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi. Praised by critics at the New York Film festival, and already generating Oscar buzz, Ang Lee’s magnum opus Life Of Pi has been topping the list of the most anticipated movies of 2012.
“Life Of Pi breaks the paradigm that 3D has to be some big, action fantasy spectacle, superhero movie,” said Cameron, whose 3D production company, Cameron Pace Group, helped equip Lee’s set. The praise certainly means a lot, coming from the creator of the visually spectacular film Avatar. “The movie is visually amazing, inventive, and it works on you in ways
you’re not really aware of. It takes you on a journey, and unless you’ve read the book — which I hadn’t — you have no idea where that journey is going. It does what good 3D is supposed to do, which is, it allows you to forget you’re watching a 3D movie,” adds Cameron.
The 3D element helped explore new
avenues, says Lee who was recently in Mumbai to showcase exclusive footage from the film to Indian audiences,
“I can’t think of this film without 3D. It may have been cheap in 2D, but the output would’ve been unsatisfactory. Thanks to 3D, I managed to take this film beyond imagination and new possibilities,” says Lee. Releasing on November 23, the movie is based on the Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Canadian writer Yann Martel. It tells the tale of a young boy named Pi, who is the only person to survive the sinking of a cargo ship. He finds himself on a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra,
an orangutan, and a Bengal Tiger. Delhi-based Suraj Sharma plays young Pi in the film, while Tabu and Irrfan Khan feature in key roles as well.
Produced by Fox Star Studios, Life Of Pi releases in 3D & 2D on November 23 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
