Karan Johar’s latest film, Student Of The Year (SOTY), has hit rough
weather. Radha, the song from the movie starring newbies Varun Dhawan,
Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, has caught the ire of Hindu
Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), a right wing organisation. Members of the
samiti held demonstrations
in Goa’s capital Panaji on Sunday, demanding that thehindustan
times, Censor Board ban the movie for derogatory references to Radha,
the mythological character, who was Lord Krishna’s lover and childhood
friend. The organisation claimed that calling Radha sexy as the song’s
lyrics do, is an insult to the sentiments of Hindus.
Recently, a voluntary organisation in Indore too had moved a petition before a local court seeking action against Johar and singer Shreya Ghoshal, among others, for using objectionable words against Hindu deities in a song. “Names of Radha and Krishna are being misused to promote the song,” Shri Vision Social Empowerment and Welfare Association secretary Manish Vishnoi had said in a statement.
This comes soon after HJS objected to Akshay Kumar inaugurating the International Film Festival of India, as they thought his film Oh My God offended Hindus. Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar also came under the scanner after many moved the court claiming that the film mocks Sikhs.
While the makers of SOTY remained unavailable to comment on the latest case, the makers of the other films cleared their stand, saying they meant no offence.Trade expert Atul Mohan says, “Bollywood is a soft target. These organisations want mileage and so filmmakers should be careful.”
FIR against Karan Johar's SOTY team for hurting religious sentiments
A criminal case has been registered against Bollywood director Karan Johar, producer Gauri Khan and others for allegedly hurting the religious feelings of people by referring to mythological figure Radha as "sexy" in a song in the recently released film Student of the Year.
The local police lodged the case in compliance with a magisterial court's order on a private complaint by an NGO.
'Shrivision Social Empowerment and Welfare Association', an NGO, had last month approached the court with a private complaint, alleging that a song in the film refers to the mythological figure Radha as "sexy".
Last month, the magistrate ordered registration of FIR, the organisation's spokesperson said.
Superintendent of Police O P Tripathi told PTI that FIR was lodged last night under section 295 (A) (hurting religious sentiments) of Indian Penal Code.
