Keep the rain from being a pet peeve
While monsoons provide a much needed respite from summer heat, they can also be a cause of concern for your pets. “There is a 50 to 60 percent increase in illnesses among pets during the monsoons. Cold, cough, pneumonia, vomiting and diarrhoea are common ailments found among cats and dogs during monsoons,” says veterinary surgeon, Dr Sunetra Wadke. Here are ways in which you can take care of your pets during the rains.
MAINTAIN HYGIENE “Cleanliness is the best way to prevent diseases,” says Wadke. Regular grooming, that includes brushing, nail clipping, ear clean-up and dental supervision, is a must. Monsoon blues for pets
According to the vets, pets are also prone to water-borne diseases like leptospirosis and fungal skin infections during monsoons. Taking your pets for annual vaccination helps prevent these diseases. “You should also avoid walking your pets in water-logged areas. After every walk, cleanse your pooch’s feet with a sponge, antiseptic wash and pet shampoos. Dry their feet and underbelly thoroughly,” says Dr Avinash Shegde. Moreover, foul-smelling skin or any itchy or hairless patches should be brought to the vet’s attention on a priority basis.
CHOOSE A WISE DIET A wrong diet during monsoons could create a havoc on your pet’s digestive system and lead to gastrointestinal diseases. According to Wadke, owners must avoid giving cold food and cold water to their pets. Avoiding spicy and oily food is also recommended. “Providing homemade food is advisable,” says Wadke.
STORM ANXIETY Besides physical illnesses, rains can also dampen your pet’s spirits. Heavy rains, lightning and thunder sounds may cause your pet to suffer from storm anxiety.
“Pamper your pet by keeping the television or radio or some music on. Nowadays, special pills that calm down their nerves are available in the market. You can contact your vet to find out the dosage suitable for your pet,” says Shegde.
HELP YOUR PET ENJOY MONSOONS
Get vaccination and deworming done before the rains start. Give regular baths to your dog. Contrary to belief, a dog requires a bath more often than once a week due to the climatic conditions in Mumbai. Equally important is drying your pet, preferably with the help of a low intensity sound hair dryer. Clad your pet in washable socks and raincoats to prevent them from getting drenched. In case your pet feels cold, provide warmth using a heating pad or special winter clothing. Indulge your pet in indoor activities.
