It's a Bumper Q4!
With films setting the cash registers ringing in this last quarter, Bollywood's already rejoicing despite four Fridays still to go
There may still be four Fridays left to go and seven films yet to release this year, but B-Town's already celebrating its last quarter (Q4). With the latest releases The Dirty Picture and Desi Boyz joining the earlier list of hits, Ra.One and Rockstar, the mood is upbeat in Bollywood and trade analysts are already calling Q4 the bumper quarter.
"Apart from Eid, usually most biggies are lined up for release during this quarter as it's the most buzzing time of the year. The last quarter is, in fact, considered the most exciting phase, and with four hits already, the mood is upbeat in the industry. It's been an early Christmas in Bollywood with this bumper quarter for sure," shares trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Trade analyst Vajir Singh agrees. "With almost five films making it to the list of the highest grossing films in Bollywood, it's been one of the best years overall for our industry this year, in terms of the hit ratio and quality of content, but this quarter has been especially good. The films have worked well not only in terms of overall recovery, but the sheer number of footfalls in theatre has been good. So, it's been a successful Q4," he says.
"Irrespective of the fate of the two biggies lined up, it's safe to call it a good year. Of course, there are other films that may or may not fare well, but given their budgets, they are unlikely to have much of an impact on the BO collections in a way that the other biggies are likely to affect," adds Taran.
Distributors too feel that the year is ending on a good note for Bollywood. "The last quarter has been quite profitable, not only with collections here, but also overseas," says a senior distributor. He is also hopeful about the films to come. "Shah Rukh Khan's film is expected to take a good opening, and there's buzz about the Ranveer Singh-Anushka Sharma film too. So these two films might up the BO collections considerably and we are confident that the year will end with a hit too," he adds.
"I would say that while the BO collections have been good this quarter, though trade was expecting it to be even better. But moolah matters apart, it's the kind of films and the content that've been noteworthy and make the quarter a reason to rejoice," says a veteran filmmaker. "The trend in trying to push the cinematic boundaries is encouraging. More than just the money, for the industry, this is a far bigger reason to celebrate," he adds.
