Vidya booked for obscenity

A criminal case has been initiated against actor Vidya Balan for 'indecency' in her recent film The Dirty Picture. Police sources confirmed that more than one criminal case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and also under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 are in the process of being filed at the Nallakunta police station in Hyderabad.
"The cases have been initiated against Vidya Balan under the directions of the Nampally Criminal Court. My counterparts in Hyderabad have confirmed that they are initiating action on the court directive and will forward us a copy, once registered," says a source from Mumbai Police. Police sources say that the case has been initiated "based on the posters of the film". "The court passed the orders on a petition filed by an advocate called SK Azad stating that the posters and hoardings of the film were spoiling the minds of the people and causing harm to the society. We will wait for the summons to be issued. As far as we know some posters and promos of the film have been asked to be removed," the police officer added. There have been reports of protests by anti-obscenity activists in parts of Hyderabad and other towns in the state during last two days, after the film released.
When contacted, producer Ekta Kapoor, said, "Really, I don't know about this case." — Soumyadipta Banerjee
