Umang 2011 at NM College concluded with a grand party; a host of dance, music and theatre events entertained students throughout
The four-day fest Umang hosted by NM College concluded with a bang this Wednesday. a bang this Wednesday.
The finale event, Sunburn Night, brought the feel of the annual Goan music festival to the campus with its groovy electronic dance music. DJs Nikhil Chinappa and Pearl manned the console as more than 5,000 students went into a party frenzy, turning the Jashoda Rang Mandir ground into a huge discotheque. “This was an event that students were looking forward to the most. In fact, there were hundreds of students queuing outside the gates for an entry.
But as the ground was already packed with people, we could only let people in when others exited. On the whole, we witnessed a footfall of more than 49,000 people,“ said Neha Madhani, PR head, Umang.
Some of the highlights of the fest included Free Style, where students showcased as many tricks as possible with a football. “The concept of this event was unusual and we had some exceptionally talented students performing. It was one of our crowd pullers,“ says Madhani. The Western Solo competition was another big entertainer with crooning students battling it out on stage.
Said singer-performer Jimmy Felix, who judged the event, “Some of the singers sounded as good as professionals. The standard of performances has risen a lot this year and students are much more confident and sure of their acts on stage.“
The Pro-Nite events witnessed bands such as Bombay Bassment, Radio Religion and Suraj Jagan.
“Back in 2005, my bandmate Terry and I had dreamt of being on this stage and performing at Umang. Today, it's amazing to actually be here and play for this crowd,“ said vocalist Sharad Shah of the Hindi-rock outfit Radio Religion.
And adding dash of Bollywood glamour to the festival were film actors Ranveer Singh who judged the finals of Actor Hunt and Vinay Pathak who judged Mr and Ms Umang. Aarakshan star Prateik interacted with students to promote his soon-to-bereleased film My Friend Pinto.
