Thigh-high slits make a comeback as society butterflies and actors strut their stuff in these outfits

One of fashion's staples - thigh high slits - seems to have made a comeback with different renditions this season. A recent fashion tour and the just concluded fashion week in the city saw various designers dress models in outfits with the slit as the focal point. Designer Mandira Wirk is a self-confessed fan of outfits with huge slits. "One can manage to grab a lot of eyeballs, dressed in a simple outfit, with a slit running all the way up to the thigh. It looks good on most body types. I know a few women who avoid wearing short outfits because they have slightly chubby legs. But they opt for slits on their gowns because it doesn't reveal much, looks classy and yet stylish," points out Mandira. The only rule here, says Mandira is that those with stubby legs should opt for slits with a lesser width over a wide open slit. "A wide open slit will defeat the purpose altogether for those with slightly plump legs," she adds.
Designer Amalraj Sengupta says that the trend perhaps came to Bollywood with veteran actor Helen who was known to set the screen ablaze in sexy outfits, often with thigh high slits. "I think slits look best on evening gowns, specifically in pageant gowns. Personally, I find gowns with long slits a little costum-ish. But those with well-toned legs will look like a million bucks in them," says Amalraj.
Designer Shivaji Dutta suggests that one should cut down on accessories if they want the slit to remain as the focus. "Team it up with stilettoes, a clutch and a pair of tear drop earrings. Thigh high slits look best in solids but there are exceptions. However, big prints don't normally do justice to this kind of design. The slit in itself could be enhanced with a leather outline to it. " he says.
