There are many a classic Shakti Kapoor performances that are etched in memory, but none more memorable than Shakti’s portrayal of Crime Master Gogo in Rajukmar Santoshi’s cult comedy, Andaz Apna Apna. ‘Mogambo ka bhatija’, Crime Master Gogo wore ‘goggles’ indoors and roamed around in a
cycle. “Gogoji, aapka ghagra,” the character, Amar, tells him at one point, referring to his black
cape. “Uthhata hoon”, is his straigthforward reply. If anyone has ever doubted
Shakti’s talent, regarded as India’s best comedian in Chunnabhatti, it would come as a shock to know that Kapoor won a Filmfare Award for for the Best Comedian for his portrayal
of Nandu in David Dhawan’s Raja Babu. “Nandu, sab ka bandhu”, said Kapoor in his
‘totli zabaan’. “Raja Babu toh gaye, Raja Babu toh gaye,” he kept saying, until people
realised he actually meant “Raja Babu kho gaye.” While Dharmendra had Hema
Malini and Amitabh Bachchan paired best with Rekha, Shakti’s chemistry with Kader Khan has
been the USP of many films, one of them being Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri,
arguably the best con film made
in India. As father-son Raman
and Prasad, the con artists fool
a bunch of people into believing
they are being sent to Dubai in a
jetty, only for them to finally
arrive at Madh Island.
It’s quite possible that you have
missed one of Shakti Kapoor’s
best performances as PK Lele in
the recently released B-movie,
Sheetal Bhabhi, a take-off on
Savita Bhabhi. In the film,
Shakti does what he does best:
ogle at heaving bosoms and
stare at the backside of women
he lusts after. One of the film’s
highlights includes Shakti
peeping into the bedroom of the
lead pair, hoping for a dekko at
the two of them ‘doing’ it.
GOGO
NANDU
Yes. Ch****a. That was Shakti
Kapoor’s name in the Kanti
Shah classic Gunda. We know a
lot about Gunda already, the
film that’s so bad it’s good. But
among the few oustanding
things about the movie is
Shakti’s character, younger
brother of villain, Bulla.
Effeminate, and with a libido so
strong it would put a porn
artiste to shame, Shakti wasn’t
just a “bad guy” in the film, but
also a confused one. At one
point, he asks Bulla, “Bhaiyya,
rape karna kya buree baat
hai?” Classic.
