With almost all the top stars right from Salman
Khan to Aamir Khan to Ajay Devgn playing cops or having played one in
their big screen outings, could our heroes of the small screen be far
behind? So, in a long list of elements that the small screen often
borrows or is inspired from its 70mm cousin, seems like cop story is hot
on the menu for now. While characters of cops have often been featured
on TV in shows like CID or Adalat or Phulwa where the lead protagonist’s
love interest was shown to be a cop or a show revolving around cops
like the comedy F.I.R., it’s of late that show-makers are showing an
increasing interest in tapping cop-land for more serious fare. Currently
on air is Hum Ne Li Hai… Shapath, which is a serious cop drama
revolving around a bunch of cops taking on the system and apparently
there are two more cop shows said to be in the making. Director Roopesh
Rai Sikand, of one such in-production show, Sadrakshanaay, reveals that
his show is based on the life of a real top cop. “I think with so many
heroes playing cops one after the other in Bollywood, the interest in
policemen is at an all-time high,” says Rai. “And that to a great extent
gave me the encouragement to make a show on a real cop’s life,” he
adds. Actor Aamir Ali who has been playing a cop on F.I.R. for more than
a year now, feels that cops always make for interesting personalities.
“That’s why we’ve always had heroes play one at some point or the other
in their careers, but with actors like Salman or Ajay playing a cop, now
it’s become really the ‘in’ thing again, so it’s not surprising to see
producers wanting to make shows based on them,” says Aamir.
Another
top TV producer feels that much has to do with the fact that crime-based
shows are increasingly getting more popular and every channel at least
boasts of one such show, thereby opening avenues to feature cop
characters. “Also what is happening is that the budgets of shows allows
them to shoot shows in a better format with more room for action and
stunts that these shows demand,” explains an insider on the show Hum Ne
Li…
An actor on condition of anonymity says that every hero dreams of
playing a cop and getting to play a man in uniform is a dream come true
for most. “So far the focus has been saas-bahu sagas, so it’s
interesting to see the point of action move from kitchen to police
station,” says the actor.
