‘I’m ready when they are’
…says actor Sharmila Tagore as she talks about speculation surrounding the marriages of her children, actors Saif and Soha Ali Khan to Kareena Kapoor and Kunal Khemu respectively

Actor Sharmila Tagore is rather calm and collected, quite in contrast to her daughter Soha Ali Khan, who admits that she finds it hard to not be so feisty. “Me and bhai (brother Saif Ali Khan) are quite unlike Amma, but also similar. She can reign in her emotions way better than any one of us can. She is so dignified, no matter what the situation. That makes her unique,” she says, under her mom’s watchful, but smiling gaze. Sharmila on her part reveals, that she is proud of her children too. “They are well brought-up kids, though they are not perfect, but then no one is,” says the mum. The mother and daughter came together at an event, where Soha revealed that she took up learning to play the piano just to fulfill mom’s wish. Soha further adds that right from childhood they have tried to never let down their parents (mum and dad, late Nawab of Pataudi, Mansur Ali Khan). “I don’t think we did bad, thanks to Amma,” she laughs, adding, “We are what we are because of Amma and Abba and we can’t thank them enough really.” But if there’s any one thing that Sharmila wishes her children imbibe from her then it’s respect for old values. “I think no matter how modern we are, we must not give up the values of old times. It’s important to be proud of your history and keep your feet firmly grounded,” she shares. As for all the marriage buzz surrounding both son Saif with actor Kareena Kapoor and daughter Soha with actor Kunal Khemu, Sharmila says, “I am ready when they are.” But Soha is quick to add, “Nothing’s happening this year for sure.” About the marriage, Sharmila says, “I am confident of my children’s upbringing and trust them with whatever choice they make. They are independent, well-educated, and smart individuals, and know what’s best for them. So, it’s their call to make.”
