Rose tint my world

AS WITH FASHION, BEAUTY TRENDS CAN ALSO BE CYCLIC. AS MAKEUP TINTS AND STAINS HAVE SEEN A RESURGENCE, TIME ’N STYLE BEAUTY HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND THE ORIGINS AND DECODE THE TYPES OF TINTS AVAILABLE

very easily the oldest ‘makeup’ in the world, tints and stains originate from the most natural sources. Ever bitten into a plum and enjoyed the tinge of colour it gives your lips? That right there is a tint or stain in its most basic form. In ancient times, women used to crush flower petals and use the tints as makeup. Today, women want to recreate the flushed tone that comes from engaging in exercise or physical activity. Instead of an excessively made-up look, they want skin that looks healthy.

Tints and stains are multifunctional products because they can be used on the eyes, lips and cheeks. On account of this versatility and the fact that it’s compact and convenient, it has become a must-have in everyone’s makeup kit. It also allows the wearer to keep it simple, yet stylish without having to spend too much time in front of a mirror. Benefit, the San Francisco-based cosmetics company, was a pioneer in this area. However today, most brands offer tints and stains, including The Body Shop, which has a lovely lip and cheek stain, while Bourjois has one in three colours.

Tints are made by adding a high-density pigment or stain into a moisturiser or a semiliquid base. Tinted foundations comprise moisturiser and
pigment colour, prepared in ratios of 70:30. Stains have highly concentrated colour and even a little spreads easily providing great coverage. These stains are normally a part of the earth colour palette, which consists of reds, pinks and browns.

Eye tints like those developed by M.A.C follow the same concept. Both tints and stains can be classified under pigments and even a drop holds a high density of colour that spreads easily. Owing to the slight transparency
in tints and stains, it doesn’t result in a made-up look, but rather a sheer sheen with a hint of colour. The newest trend in beauty today is luminescence. Instead of opting for dewy makeup, women are looking for luminescent, healthy skin, and stains and tints conform to this idea of radiance.
