MEMORABLE VILLAIN of Indian Film Industry

Mogambo

This is the daddy of all dens.
Carved within the caves of an
unknown island, Mogambo’s
hideout in Mr India is as cutting-
edge as it gets. There are
missiles aimed at different metros
in India, a research lab that
churns out weapons, robots
walk around in cheery abandon
and, of course, the boiling lava
chamber. Then there’s the bling
— a shiny throne complete with
glass globes on the arm rest,
and a colourful imprint of India
on the floor. Mogambo’s foresight
can be seen in his decision
to put red lights all over.

Shaakaal
Shaakaal’s hideout in Shaan is
on top of a jagged rocky mountain
on an island. On the inside,
it is as smooth as Shaakaal’s
bald head. While the milky
white interiors and sliding
doors add to the sophistication,
Shaakaal’s preferred tool of torture
is the revolving table. He
controls the table with buttons
— one click can put metal fasteners
onto his victims’ wrists,
another gets the table revolving
and yet another tilts the chair
back 180 degrees, hurling the
victim into a water chamber
filled with sharks.

Gabbar
There are no gadgets or sliding
doors at Gabbar’s den in
Sholay. But its sheer location
makes it formidable — heaven
knows how much Gabbar must
have trekked to locate this
hideout. Connected by just one
bridge, access is limited.
Acoustics are top-notch.
Perched high up on the watchrock,
Samba can clearly hear
Gabbar’s orders. Torture mechanism
is a simple rod, which
the victim can be tied to. You
can take his life or hands,
whichever appeals to the inner
villain in you the most.

Sir John Locksley
More a palace than den, Sir
John Locksley’s lair in Shalimar
lies on a remote island. The story
revolves around a precious
gem, and Sir John has invited
the best thieves from around
the world in a sort of competition
to steal it from his stronghold.
Cameras ensure Sir John
has his eyes all over his estate.
The room housing the gem has
black and white tiles booby
trapped by mines. Any thief will
have to watch his step.

Dr Dang
Dada Thakur and his team
traces Dr Dang’s hideout deep
in the Himalayan jungles in
Karma. Grey is Dang’s colour of
choice for the decor, asbestos
the material he uses to build
this secret hideout. It’s
equipped with jails, and a
modified cross to tie up prisoners
in chains. But the killer
weapon is — wait for it —
exploding coconuts to kill
unsuspecting bhakts.
