Deewar
In what is possibly Amitabh
Bachchan’s most memorable
performance as the
angry young man, Bachchan
plays Vijay a seething coolie
who turns to a life of crime
as a way out of his poverty.
As a gangster he comes into
direct conflict with his brother
Ravi essayed by Shashi
Kapoor. In the heart-breaking
climax to the film, Vijay
is chased down by the police
led by Ravi and is wounded
badly. Taking refuge at a
temple he makes peace with
God and dies a bloody death
on his mother’s lap
Agneepath
The husky voice, the kohllined
eyes, the towering
suave persona, Bachchan as
Vijay Deenanath Chauhan
seems almost indestructable
in the film. However
taking on the formidable
Kancha Cheena (Danny
Denzongpa) and his army of
goons takes its toll as Vijay
is not only shot multiple
times but also runs
through a field of exploding
mines before finally
succumbing.
Muqaddar ka Sikandar
In this classic,Bachchan
plays the unfortunate
Muqaddar whose life is beset
by misunderstandings.
He is in love with Kaamna
(Raakhee) but is unable to
voice his feelings. In the climax
Kaamna is kidnapped
by Dilawar (Amjad Khan)
and Sikander is mortally
wounded in the ensuing battle.
However wounded he
may be Sikander makes his
way to Kaamna’s wedding
and with his last words
blurts out his true feelings.
