Women on wheels
The concept of road trips has undergone a complete change ever since women riders have started taking part in these expeditions
Road trips were predominantly a male-dominated activity, but it has recently seen an upswing in the number of women participating. Besides taking off independently on road trips, lot of women are also joining up for road trips organised by local tour operators. There are also quite a few all-women road trips arranged by travel companies.
Bollywood too has seen a constant surge in the number of actresses learning to and wanting to ride a bike. Actor Katrina Kaif was recently seen riding a dirt bike in Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara. Actor Gul Panag, who is a self-confessed bike enthusiast, got recently married and instead of the traditional bidaai in the car, she sat next to her husband and the couple zoomed off on the bike. The actor has apparently been riding a bike ever since she was 18. Talking about it she had earlier said, "I have been riding bikes ever since I can remember. It has been one of those things I enjoy doing. I ride an Enfield and riding a bike for me is very cathartic in a lot of ways." The actor has also done a couple of trips to different parts of the country. Model-turned-actor Pia Trivedi is the latest one to have gone on a road trip. The pretty actor decided to take a couple of days off when she got an unexpected holiday in between her shoots. "I zoomed off to Manali with a couple of my friends. We flew to Chandigarh and from there we rode up to Manali. It took us about a day and a half to reach Manali because we stopped for the night and really enjoyed the ride. The cherry on the cake was that I rode a Harley Davidson. Though I learnt to ride on a sports bike, I think I am a cruiser person," says Pia who now plans to get a specially designed customised bike with an Enfied engine.
Abhishek Kadam, tour operator of Konkan Moto Tours says there has definitely been a steady increase in the number of women bike riders. He explains, "Women riders consider a lot of things before joining these trips. Though a lot of women ride pillion, some prefer riding as well...say one in every 20. Some of the female riders are really passionate and it is good to see them at par with men."
