Dussera delights galore!
As Navratri and Durga Puja draw to a close with Dussera today, some of our Bollywood hotties take a walk down memory lane and recall their fondest memories of fest time
Like the rest of the country, Bollywood's in a festive mode too celebrating Dussera today. And on this auspicious day, After Hrs caught up with some of the B-Town actors as they shared their fondest memories of fest time on a local radio station. One thing was for sure, the childhood memories of Dussera were clearly the best memories they had to share...
Vidya Balan: Vidya Balan's earliest memory of the festival is somewhat different from the rest as she recalls breaking a boy's hand during the Dussera celebrations! "I remember that I broke a boy's hand while playing dandiya during my school days! There was some altercation and we fought bitterly and I hit him. There was a hairline fracture too that he suffered due to me. We were both children then and I got a lot of scolding because of my behavior," shared Vidya.
Kajol: Kajol recalls watching people do the garba, than take part in them. "I used to love watching people do the garba more than participating. I also remember that I used to serve food at the pandals and play all day long during Durga festivities. Now I am a proud mother and I love to see my kids having fun at the pandal," she says, adding, "Dandiya khelne waaloan thoda intezaar karo, Kajol thoda waqt lagayegi!"
Sonakshi Sinha: The actor reminisces how during her childhood she used to head to garba pandals and play garba during Navratri celebrations. "Once it so happened that I decided to compete for 'The Best Dressed Garba Dancer Prize' but I ended up being dressed in a relatively simple lehenga. I was the odd one out in the midst of all the other heavily ornated and colourfully dressed women. Though I could not win the prize that day, but I remember that I had a lot of fun the whole day," says Sonakshi.
Rani Mukerji: Rani says that she learnt the Rabindra Sangeet (songs of the great Bengali bard Rabindranath Tagore) during Durga Puja, which is a prominent feature in the Dussera festivals as everyone sits around and sing songs. It's called Bijoyar Baithaki in popular parlance. "My tryst with Rabindra Sangeet was from the pandals. We made it a point to never miss those sittings. I started learning the Rabindra Sangeet during these Durga Puja celebrations from the elders of my family who taught me. While Diwali, Christmas, Eid are all festivals to celebrate and enjoy, Durga Puja for Bengalis is like all festivals combined into one," says Rani.
