Earlier this year Ajay Devgn and Aditya Chopra crossed swords over Kajra Re in Bol Bachchan
Looks like the stand-off between Ajay Devgn’s and Aditya Chopra’s production houses started well before their battle over the number of screens for Son Of Sardaar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan, respectively. It is learnt that the two had an issue earlier this year, when Devgn’s company asked Adi’s production house for an audio clip of the song, Kajra Re, from the latter’s film Bunty Aur Babli, to be used in Bol Bachchan. According to our source, a part of the song was required for the sequence in which Abbas Ali, played by Abhishek Bachchan, dances to a medley. Earlier this year, Ajay and Aditya had crossed swords... “For the medley, Ajay’s productionhouse had sourced the clips of Ooh La La (The Dirty Picture), Darling (7 Khoon Maaf), Bhaag DK Bose (Delhi Belly) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan Main Naachungi (Sholay) among others. When Adi’s company demanded 5 lakh to use Kajra Re, Kajol told Ajay that she’d speak to Aditya Chopra and sort it out,” recalls our source, adding that Ajay declined the idea, saying he was ready to pay 5 lakh for the clip. However, Ajay was livid when he received the bill. Our source reveals, “He had been sent a bill of 25 lakh. Ajay was shocked that he was being charged five times the amount that was agreed upon verbally. So much so that he decided not to use Kajra Re in the medley.”
As for the producers who gave the clips of the songs from their films, they were given a ‘Special Thanks’ in the credit roll.
The spokesperson from Chopra’s company said, “We had never quoted 5 lakh for the clip. We initially quoted 25 lakh to a third party who approached us on their behalf. We subsequently brought it down to 20 lakh when the production house spoke to our licensing team directly.” He added, “This is the normal that is charged in the industry for the sync rights of any blockbuster song by any music company.”
