R A PODAR COLLEGE om Marathi latkas and jhatkas to graceful Salsa moves and stand-up comedy to ramp walks
WITTY, WACKY AND VERSATILE
From Marathi latkas and jhatkas to graceful Salsa moves and stand-up comedy to ramp walks, variety was truly the spice of Clean & Clear Bombay Times Fresh Face 2012
R A PODAR COLLEGE
The students of Podar College, a bunch of enthusiastic and talented performers, showcased skills ranging from mimicry to Marathi latkas and jhatkas.
While some contestants were trained in classical music, others crooned Sufi and old films songs. A few preferred playing the guitar. One of the notable performances was by Sarang Patil, who started off by painting on a canvas and followed it with a dance performance.
Mangesh Palav had everyone in splits when he mimicked the way a couple of his friends flirt. Sheena Uppal left the audience spellbound with her Salsa skills. On the other hand, Rahul Deo had the girls cheering for him as he strummed his guitar and sang along.
Priyanka Gawali, the female winner, danced to a popular Marathi song. The winner among the boys, Dhruv Shukla, stood out for his quick wit, presence of mind and dance performance. One of the female runners-up, Shweta Rokade, caused a laugh riot when she mimicked popular toon characters Shinchan and Pikachu. Later, she also grooved to Halkat Jawani. The other runner-up, Rasneet Oberoi, walked the ramp. Harsh Shah and Kunal Rege, the two runners-up among the boys, came up with impressive performances — a mono act and dance, respectively. Celebrity judge Karan Kundra was a favourite with the students. In fact, the winner, Priyanka, wanted to take the actor home. In his inimitable style, he asked her, ‘Is your mom a good cook?’. When she said ‘I am a better cook’, pat came the response, ‘Let’s go right now’. The highlight of the contest was when Karan joined the students to dance along to the tunes of Angrezi Beat.
— Neha Maheshwri Bhagat HINDUJA COLLEGE
Girls reigned supreme at Hinduja College, with many of them being versatile singers and dancers. While their performances ranged from classical to folk, the boys made an attempt at standup comedy.
Pretty and petite Yashika won hands down when she confidently chose a career in modelling over love. “If my boyfriend really loves me, he will let me pursue my career,” she said.
The winner among boys, Priyesh Patel, proved to be a great entertainer — his rap skills left everyone spellbound. On the other hand, runners-up Kunal More impressed the judges with his take on flaunting a girlfriend in college. “I don’t think having a girl by your side can be termed very cool, nor does it lift one’s status in college,” he said.
Celebrity judge Karanvir Bohra, who made a style statement — he had
his trademark
hood —was not apologetic about arriving late. Instead, he said it was a deliberate move to build up momentum and anxiety among the students, which he was successful in doing.
He stumped the students with questions like, ‘Do you think boys have sex on their mind all the time?’ and ‘What will you do if you are stuck in a lift with Poonam Pandey for several hours?’ But Karanvir, too, wasn’t spared by the students. Referring to his character in a telly show, where he plays a psychotic spouse, the students asked, ‘Do you beat up your wife?’ Pat came the reply. “No, actually my wife beats me up and I remove my frustration on my screen wife,” he said, amid applause and laughter.
