Ramaiya Vastavaiya
That’s not just the hit song from Raj Kapoor’s Shree 420, it’s also the name of Prabhudheva’s next film as director
Prabhudheva’s next, a musical love story titled Ramaiya Vastavaiya, sees Kumar Taurani’s son Girish Kumar make his big-screen debut opposite Shruti Haasan. Prabhu was signed for this project immediately after Wanted.
It was Prabhu’s idea to name the film Ramaiya Vastavaiya. “He had this title in mind for a long time. We had shortlisted a couple of titles but this one seemed perfect. The translation says ‘Ram, will you come?’ and that was perfect for our film because Girish’s name in the film is Ram,” explains Taurani.
He adds, “We had signed Prabhudheva for a different film two years back. I loved Wanted and really like the way he makes commercial films with the right amount of action, romance and comedy. I wanted someone experienced like him to direct the film, so he came on board. However, he said that he had an idea for a love story in his mind and that he wanted to direct one. Prabhu said, ‘Everyone thinks I am like the films I make — Wanted and Rowdy Rathore — but in reality this is how I am.’ I feel he is a romantic person. Though we are working together for the first time, I was extremely impressed with his working style.”
Girish, on his part, has worked on making a convincing debut. Since the film is a musical, he had to be adept at dancing. Prabhu helped him in this department as well. He appointed one of his dance assistants to train Girish for a few months and would personally supervise his progress at the end of each week.
Shruti, too, came on board almost immediately after they approached her. Sixty per cent of the film is already complete while the remaining portion will be wrapped up by January-end in Mumbai, Australia or South Africa.
Ramaiya Vastavaiya, produced by Tips Industries Limited and Kumar Taurani, releases June 7, 2013.
