GRASSHOPPER/ PSYCHEDELIA
The band was started in 2012 by musicians Gaurav Shah, Rahul Singh, Amarpreet, Bhaven Dhanak, Gautam Deb, Keshav Iyengar and Suvir Singh.
On their a-ha moment: The paradigm shift in our creative approach happened when we realized we’re much more than just being in the music business. We’re actually in the business of emotions and expression. This changed everything for us right from the compositional stage. From lyrics that are poetic and metaphoric, to infusing space in our compositions, allowing listeners to absorb the emotions in their own life space, to weaving a journey that is emotionally stirring, to musical passages allow listeners to drift into their own melancholy state; the album grew into much more than just music but an equivalent of being like the mother’s lap, where one can rest their head, drown out the noise and let the melody in.
On their brand of music: We’re as international as it gets but, in the psychedelic/progressive realm. The album is a result of multiple global collaborations that have helped create a certain sound for the band. We were certain that we didn’t to leave any stone unturned in achieving this and hence, we approached Tim Palmer, based in Austin, Texas who is a Grammy nominated mixing engineer who has worked with bands like U2, Pearl Jam, Richard Wright, Porcupine Tree and many others. The album was mastered at Sterling Sound, New York and that lends a finesse to our sound that was crucial to allow listeners to experience the subtleties in our musical experience. Our artwork is a result of collaboration with Jonathan Key, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Sydney, Australia and a video is planned in collaboration with Jonathan and an artist from Canada. Input equals output — you are what you eat and you are what you read, watch and listen to!
On their influences: We draw our influences from life, from people, from those subtle moments when an emotional spark gets lit within us. However, to be specific, our musical influences range from the psychedelic & progressive rock era of the past to new age genres like IDM & Glitch. Bands that focus more on lyrical and musical depth and whose works focus on musicianship & mastery of the craft is what catches our fancy.
On the way forward: Our horizon for the coming decade is to establish Grasshopper as a band dedicated to creating high quality sonic and performance led experiences and collaborating with like minded artists driven to create genre defining work. There’s a whole host of young talent mushrooming but the avenues in terms of acoustically treated venues, high quality engineering and recording facilities, access to the right global marketing channels is not being looked into with the right gravitas. The Indian music scene is booming and needs to be globally exposed and in the right quality. We’d like to collaborate with artists and managers who are driven and can see this being a
