The world’s on a celebration spree on the 50th death anniversary of the
iconic sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe, could Mumbai be far behind?

Hailed as the ultimate seductress, Marilyn was born on June 1, 1926, as Norma Jean Mortinson. She died an untimely death at an early age of 36 (August 1, 1962), her personal life was reportedly wrought with the downsides of glamour and drugs — three husbands, multiple miscarriages, numerous affairs, including with the President of America and gangsters. But that does not seem to have made a dent on the late American actor and singer’s mystique. She continues to remain the eternal muse to glamour and fashion. Fashion designer Rajat Tangri points out how the icon’s influence can be seen in the ongoing fashion week in the city. “Marilyn Monroe has been a very strong fashion icon. And I feel that she has been at the back of every designer’s mind during this fashion week too,” says Tangri. “Both Pernia and Ritu Beri have this vintage collection to show, totally inspired by Marilyn. Even I have something on the similar lines to showcase,” he adds. “It was the sheer carelessness about her that made her a fashion legend,” says celebrity fashion photographer Pravin Talan on what makes Monroe every photographer’s dream subject. “She had the perfect, and highly rare, combination of beauty and mystery,” emphasises Talan. “She also had the most gorgeous smile and, at the same time, a deadly sensual appeal. Most women, even in Bollywood, are either sensuous or pretty. On the home turf, I think, the one who comes closest to this late diva is actor Madhuri Dixit.” Model Candice Pinto asserts that Monroe is till date “every woman’s inspiration. “She has played a part in every woman’s life. Her elegance, her sexiness and her style is what makes her a perfect woman according to me,” she says.  |
