Down party lanes

A lot of clubs are ditching fancy malls and cropping up in city lanes, alleys. We find out why

Riddhi Mitra, a self-employed businesswoman, likes to keep her mall experience and clubbing ways separate. What with several new clubs, pubs and bars cropping up within Mumbai's alleys and lanes, she has options galore. An increasing number of clubbing hotspots are now ditching buzzing areas and fancy malls, and moving into residential lanes. Reason: the hike in rents. Upside: usually there's less traffic to wade through. Flipside: neighbours might just complain of noise levels. Yes, a lot of them have had to down the shutters. But that hasn't kept clubs from mushrooming within lanes. Count I Bar, Toto's Garage, Rude Lounge, Bootleggers, Mangii Ferra, Zaza, Ghetto, The Den, Hawaiian Shack, Elbo Room among many others. Lanes in areas such as Bandra, Juhu, Napean Road, and Mahalaxmi are turning into party hubs.
Take the case of the lane in Bandra Reclamation, for instance, and its newest addition, I Bar. It's already on party destination chartbuster where several B-Town celebs have been spotted. Lakhan Jethani, the owner of the hotspot, says, "I chose Bandra Reclemation as a place mainly because it's not very noisy and there is not much of traffic in the area. Also, we considered the fact that Bandra is the 'Queen of Surbubs' and is easily the mid-point from town and other parts. The Worli sea link ends right there, so it's convenient for people to travel."

Says AD Singh, MD of The Olive Bar & Kitchen that is situated in the Union Park lane in Khar, "As the market has matured, the key factor has become the location." Ask him if there's a secret to running such businesses and he replies, "You just need a good location, a good concept and great food." He adds, "Rents are too high in a city like Mumbai and we have to take that into consideration. We are all working for our landlords at the end of the day," Singh reasons.
Riddhi sums it up, "Such locations don't attract random people and that filters the crowd."
