Everyone’s talking about actor Chitrangda Singh’s item song Kafirana in the upcoming film Joker. The actor’s turnaround from her strong art-house image to the comparisons to item songs like Chammak Challo and Chikni Chameli, her item song has got everyone buzzing. The actor herself is unperturbed. “Comparisons are inevitable. Everyone so far, has done a good job with their item numbers, so worrying about it is pointless. Irrespective of whether you do a good job or not, you will be compared to someone or the other,” she says.
Ask her if this means a complete closure to the parallel cinema that she strongly came to represent. Chitrangda is quick to state that she has no intention of giving up any form of cinema. “I love doing roles that work for me as an actor. A strong role is always on the top of the priority list for me and that’s why, after a Desi Boyz and my item number in Joker, my next film is Inkaar — it’s a film that deals with sexual exploitation at workplace,” she says.
The actor, who’s paired opposite actor Arjun Rampal in this film, says it was great fun working with him. “Arjun and I had a good time working together. He is a great co-star and a fantastic person.” Considering there are a couple of intimate scenes in the film, was she uncomfortable doing it? “Not at all. The scenes were aesthetically shot and explained much in advance to me. It all really depends on the director’s sensibility,” she explains. The actor is also quite vocal about taking up a cause to spread awareness about sexual exploitation. “While doing my research for the role, I learnt that it was easier to prove rape than sexual exploitation. The latter happens everywhere — even for the maid who comes to work everyday. I feel very strongly about an issue like this.”
