Hollywood hottie Halle Berry on playing multiple roles on reel and in real life

She is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, has won some of the most prestigious awards, been voted the sexiest woman, but according to Hollywood star Halle Berry, the most rewarding aspect is ‘appreciation’. “All these are titles. But I think the real reward is appreciation from the audience,” says the Oscar-winner. In an e-mail interview with After Hrs, Halle also talks about her upcoming film Cloud Atlas, motherhood, India and more…

Do you think motherhood
impacts an actor’s career in any way?
I think if you want to have a career, you can have a career. At times when I don’t want to work and be a mom, that’s what I do.

You are easily one of the hottest mums in showbiz. But do you think that your being sexy affects the roles filmmakers offer you in some way ?
Well, I have never really thought about it.

Are you aware of Bollywood and Indian culture?
Yes. I have heard of Bollywood and about Indian culture. Olivier (fiance actor Olivier Martinez) travels to India almost every year and he has also watched two or three Indian films. I have heard so much about the country. He often talks about the people and how lovely they are. Unfortunately, I do not know of any Indian actors except the ones here in Hollywood. But I’d love to do a cameo in a Bollywood film.

Any plans of visiting the country?
If everything works out, I’ll visit India soon. I want to visit Rajasthan. I have heard a lot about the palaces there.

Your upcoming film Cloud Atlas delves into the theme of
reincarnation. Do you believe in karma and reincarnation?
Yes, I do believe that everything is connected. Karma plays a role in every decision we make. Everything has consequences. I know reincarnation plays a huge part in Indian mythology. And people there strongly believe in this philosophy.

What was the challenge in doing a film
like this, one that sees you in multiple
characters?
Every character that I played was connected to the other characters played by my co-actors in the film. So, changing my style of acting, understanding the other characters in the layer and to get everything in sync was a challenge. Each character I played was different. It was nothing like I have done before. I think, I can relate to every character that I have played in the film in some way or the other. These characters talk so much about humankind and our deeds.
