‘I needed time to prepare’

Having once quit a show because she didn’t want to play a mother, Rashami Desai is now back, doing exactly that

Marking the landmark 1,000th episode of the popular show Uttaran (Colors), Tapasya (played by Rashami Desai) will return to the tube to help unite Veer and Ichcha. This time around, she will play a more positive character, unlike her earlier negative avatar, by saving her daughter Mukta (Sreejita De) from marrying Tej Singh Bundela (Kiran Karmarkar).
Earlier this year, Rashami quit the show because she didn’t want to play a mother to actors her own age. Now, with her returning to play mother to Mukta, who in real life is a good friend, won't it be tough?
“I will look upon it as a character. Earlier, I felt that I needed time to prepare myself to play a mother convincingly,” says Rashami.
Thrilled that Uttaran will cross a thousand episodes (on November 7), Rashami says she has learnt a lot from the show. “Uttaran works because it has real emotions and situations. Of course, some drama is essential in a television show, but people connect to the characters. I learnt a lot about life from my character. Tapasya was very competitive.”
Talking about returning in a more positive role, she says, “I feel lucky to be getting the chance to portray different shades in one character — from a naïve teenager, to a girl in love, to a married woman. Now, Tapasya will be a positive character and help Ichcha and Mukta.”
