Sequins have been there, but are now back like never before
From Bollywood hottie Deepika Padukone to pop diva Beyonce Knowles — everyone's flaunting their sparkling side! And it's got nothing to do with their jewellery, but their outfits dazzling in good 'ol sequins. Yes, they've come back in a big way.
Sequins in any form is a big hit — be it in the form of acessories or design. A sequinned outfit is a celebrity favourite the world over. Sequin applique is also a hot favourite as it's shiny, yet has a classy feel!
Says designer Nachiket Barve says, "Since time immemorial, people have been attracted and fascinated to lustre, shine and shimmer, be it in beetle wings, shells or spangles. The reason could be anything from wearing it for parties, festive occasions or just to stand out. There's something flirty and celebratory about sequins, depending on how they are used. Used well it looks fab, else can look cheap and trashy. Given the high voltage glam look that is so favoured on the red carpet, sequins are in." Nachiket adds, "Quality fabrics, well-cut shapes and less skin show is mandatory to make sequins stylish! Also age appropriateness is important as you don't want to look like a 'mutton dressed as lamb'. When in doubt go tonal — black on black, pewter, champagne is the way to go!"
Veteran designer Ritu Kumar feels that sequins are like sarees to the Western world. "In the West, sequins are like our sarees — we keep modernising it as we know it never lets us down," she elaborates adding, "Sequin dresses, jackets or accesories are red carpet favourites amongst celebrities. They instantly grab attention as it's glam, unless overdone!"
At the recently concluded fashion week, designer Pria Kataria Puri had showcased a few sequin applique dresses. "Everyone wants to shine this party season. Glitter and glamour is back with a bang, but with sophistication and elegance. We are seeing the 2011 version of the hot 80's trend," she says.
