A DAY OF BLACK MAGIC AND FAIRYTALES ON THE RAMP

A DAY OF BLACK MAGIC AND FAIRYTALES ON THE RAMP

Black was the dominant colour at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013, which also saw menswear and men-inspired collections

Designer Rocky S weaved vintage magic on the ramp with his collection titled ‘Rocky Star’. With a menacingly dark palette both in terms of the clothes and the make up, his noir collection was high on drama. Velvet floral appliqués, column mermaid shape gowns, shimmering drop waist embroidered silhouettes with trailing skirts, moulded lace and net-layered ruffled ensembles and mini capes featured in the collection.
Said Rocky, “I’ve focused on the entire vintage look of the medieval ages in the show. It’s going to be big this season, plus my signature black is the core of the collection.”
Sheer was the focal point of each garment, giving the entire collection a very sensuous appeal. Flapper dresses made for special highlights. The palette itself moved from black to dull gold, grey and shimmering silver. Miss India International 2011 Ankita Shorey was the designer’s muse for the show and walked in a fishtail lace gown.
Many of Rocky’s friends from Btown and Mumbai turned up to cheer for him, including Evelyn Sharma, Shilpa and Shamita Shetty, Nitesh Rane and Manish Malhotra, among others.

Designer Shehla Khan showcased a deeper and bolder hued collection named ‘Tale Of The Unexpected’, which draws inspiration from the designer’s love for fairy tales. Veering away from flowy silhouettes, she showcased an array of structured looks. “The silhouettes are bold and an element of structure exists in almost every look, representing royalty with contemporary feminine grace,” she said. Jacqueline Fernandes walked as her showstopper in a powder pink buillon and lace-embroidered corset paired with a
hand painted tuille skirt and a statement collar pearl necklace. She said, “Shehla’s clothes are very feminine, wearable and contemporary. I’m thrilled to be here; I feel like a modern day princess.” Many friends cheered her during the show, including Ayan Mukerji, Sunita and Rhea Kapoor, Sharmila Khanna, Pinky Reddy, Madhu Nair, Zarine Khan and Kajol, who was sporting a creation by the designer. She has a flagship store and studio in Colaba.
