CHENNAI EXPRESS CONTINUES TO PLUNDER EVERYTHING THAT COMES ITS WAY
It’s almost as if this train has no brakes. Yes, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express continues to plunder everything that comes its way. Not only did the film offer stiff competition to Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara that released six days after it, it’s going full steam and setting records in the annals of Bollywood’s box-office history.
OUATIMD, which actually made way for CE to become the solo release on Ramzan Eid, managed only a limited release on Independence Day (August 15). But in the remaining three days between Friday and Sunday, the Akshay Kumar-Imran Khan-Sonakshi Sinha film did derail CE a bit.
However, considering CE was in its second week, the numbers it netted are still good. OUATIMD reportedly cost its makers around 103 crore. Its satellite rights were sold for around 45 crore in a package deal along with Ek Thi Daayan and Shootout At Wadala. The music and home video rights have fetched 5 crore and the overseas collections on the first weekend is around 7 crore (Gross Box Office Collection). The producers gave out an official India net collection of 51.8 crore for the period from August 15 to 18.
