Had I returned in a glamorous role, I would have looked like a clown

...says Shilpa Shirodkar who is set to play Kamlabai in a TV show

She took a break from acting years ago to play the role of a doting wife and full-time mother in real life. And, though acting was never on the cards, it took an Ek Mutthi Aasmaan to tempt Shilpa Shirodkar to make a comeback. Interestingly, the actress — known more for her glamorous avatar — plays Kamla bai, a maid, who is the protagonist of the show.
She says, “Had I returned in a glamorous avatar after 13 years, I would have looked like a clown. This show will allow me to showcase my talent. There is a little bit of Kamlabai in me. I didn’t have to do any homework or preparation for the part. Like any of us, she also has hopes and aspirations.” Shilpa says she realised the worth of house help when she shifted abroad after marriage. “I was
used to a life of luxury, which is provided by people like Kamla Bai. I could return to acting because of my help Kishori, who is taking care of my family back home.”
So, what’s the feedback from her help? “Kishori and even my daughter Anushka have watched the promos and discussed my show. She tells me it looks good and will work. She is very proud of me. I hope the show runs for many years to come,” she says.
How’s it to return after so long? “I am learning everything from scratch — right from acting to mouthing dialogues. But I have brought with me my share of professionalism, dedication and honesty. My attitude and mentality towards work hasn’t changed,” she says.
Ek Mutthi Aasmaan launches tonight and will air from Monday to Friday at 7 pm on Zee TV.
