Debutant director says he was told to avoid Indo-Pak subjects

Debutant director says he was told to avoid Indo-Pak subjects

Anti-Pakistan sentiment has been the common factor in all films on Indo-Pak wars. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that a certain brand of ‘patriotism’ is a constant feature of such films in Bollywood. That, perhaps, made debutant director Faraz Haider decide to showcase the relations between the two countries in a light manner in what he and his team are calling India’s first war comedy. The film, called War Chhod Na Yaar, stars Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan and Jaaved Jaaferi.
Says Faraz, “Uptil now, almost all films made on Indo-Pak issues showed Pakistan in a bad light. I’m not saying it is wrong, nor am I pointing fingers at anyone. Also, the purpose behind making this
film is not to hurt Pakistan or its people.”
He adds, “We’ve shown the human side of all army men — Indian or Pakistani — without forgetting their sacrifices for their countries. But we have taken some harmless cinematic liberties in portraying different characters on both sides.” Starting on the film wasn’t easy, he says. “When I thought of making this film, many people close to me told me not to touch this topic as it would be too sensitive. I understand India and Pakistan have a lot of problems which need an immediate solution. But instead of solving them, we’re busy fighting over unimportant issues.”
War Chhod Na Yaar, produced by AOPL Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., releases October 11.

Kunal makes 17-year-old’s dream come true

Kunal makes 17-year-old’s dream come true

Actor Kunal Kapoor, The Clean & Clear MTV Dream Project and M.A.D got together to start a digital fundraiser called Ketto, that has, over a period of time, helped fulfill the dreams of over a thousand homeless girls.
Not only did Kunal provide professional services through Ketto, he also personally helped fulfill 17-year-old Manisha’s dream, through a platform that connects people to a 1000 young, underprivileged girls across India, to make their small yet precious dreams come true. In Manisha’s case, it meant a cycle to take her younger siblings to school.

Said Kunal, “Initiatives such as these help individuals like us to fulfill the dreams of these girls. When I got the chance to be that helping hand for Manisha to achieve her simple yet precious dream, I felt so much happiness! More so, I was very moved by what her dream was — she did not want the cycle for herself but for
her siblings. I hope that girls like Manisha never stop dreaming.”
Originally from a village in Uttar Pradesh, Manisha has been living in Mumbai with her family for the last 12 years. Manisha shared, “My father has been suffering from cancer for quite a while. My mother has to spend most of her time in the hospital, to meet doctors, buy medicines and support my father. I did my best to make our lives better. Being the eldest child, I took the
responsibility of taking care of the house and my younger siblings. The play school they go to is very far, and I walk everyday to pick them up as they cannot come on their own. That is why my dream was to own a cycle, so that I pick them up and come home safe and continue with my other tasks.”
She added, “This dream meant so much to me, and it really has made my day-to-day life so much better as I save so much time!”

Saas-bahu show with a difference to hit the small screen

Saas-bahu show with a difference to hit the small screen

Anew show, titled Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai, is set to highlight a common social evil — how daughters-in-law are treated differently from daughters. Set in Gorakhpur, UP, the story revolves around a conservative family where the mother-inlaw, Naulakha Devi (Prachee Pathak), is a very strict and domineering woman who is ritualistic to the core.
She sees her bahus in a very orthodox light and believes that they should be ruled over.
    In contrast, her daughter-in
law Sia (Payal Rajput) is vibrant and bubbly. She represents the modern young woman, who is fearless and self-respecting. Sia believes that her sasural is not going to be any different from her maayka.
Sharad Raj, head — programming and content of the channel, says, “With changing times, social and family dynamics also need to evolve and we intend to address this in the show. The young women of our country want to know why they have to be ‘typical’
daughters-in-law; restricted and a bit removed from the rest of the family.” Producer Bharat Srivastava explains, “The show is a saga of different shades attached to marriage. Post marriage, a girl transforms from innocence to maturity, from a carefree life to a role of responsibility and from a girl to a woman.” The show also features Seema Pandey, Aryan Pandit and Paritosh Sand.
Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai launches tonight and will air from Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Sahara One.

STREAKERS AT FASHION WEEK

Topless protestors gatecrash Paris Fashion Week

There’s been a curious surge in the number of streakers invading fashion weeks to bring attention to several protests — sometimes serious and sometimes dubious.
During the Milan Fashion Week in June, a male streaker, who was wearing nothing save sneakers, disrupted the Dolce and Gabbana show and ran across the catwalk. This weekend, the Nina Ricci show at the
Paris Fashion Week suffered the same fate as two topless Femen protestors invaded the runway in the middle of the show. The slogan on one of the ladies read ‘Fashion dictater’. The duo entered the runway, started screaming and ran towards the photographers. Even though they were soon forced off the stage by security personnel, they did manage to grab attention at the show.

MUMBAI TO GET INDIA’S FIRST LIGHTHOUSE TOURIST DESTINATION

MUMBAI TO GET INDIA’S FIRST LIGHTHOUSE TOURIST DESTINATION

It was a few months ago when I got a call from our young Minister of Shipping Milind Deora asking me if I would like to take a trip to the nearby Kanhoji Angre lighthouse, just off the coast of Mumbai. He wanted to examine whether we could make the lighthouse into a tourist destination and asked if the Times of India would support the initiative. So we agreed to meet at 6 am at the Gateway of India and took a 40-minute boat ride to the island. Throughout the way, we could not help but marvel at the fact that our sea looked as beautiful as any other part of the world, but it was just that we had not seen its potential, as a country, to exploit it for tourism. I was excited with the possibility of we Indians also getting an experience in our country that we otherwise, only see as tourists in other countries. Months after our visiting the island, the Ministry of Tourism has finally given its consent to the Ministry of Shipping and jointly, they have started to develop three lighthouses, that they have identified, into tourist destinations — Kanhoji Angre in Mumbai, the Dolphin’s Nose in Vishakhapatnam and Mahabalipuram lighthouse about 40 kms south of Chennai. The first to be launched would be, of course, the one in Mumbai. We bring you excerpts of our exclusive conversation with the two ministers:

Have you visited any of the international lighthouses? Once as a brand ambassador of a beverage brand, I was supposed to shoot an ad in South Africa in a lighthouse. But I couldn’t make it due to my tight schedule, but thanks to the graphics the ad showed me in the lighthouse and it looked fantastic. Now, once these lighthouses are built, Milind and I can actually stand on the lighthouse and give a shot.

Are you enjoying being a minister as much as you enjoyed being an actor? I enjoyed being an actor in the 30 years of my film career. After that, I think venturing into politics is a way to give back. I used to do some philanthropic work but with the political platform, I can contribute in a bigger way. On the lighter side, as an actor, your acting hours are limited but as a minister, it is unlimited. I remember when the Prime Minister appointed me, he said, ‘We have rightfully chosen you as a tourism minister as you have enormous experience and you have gone all over the world as an actor, so you know how to enhance, uplift and encourage our tourism sector. You can be a brand ambassador for your ministry.’ Our three big constraints for building tourism are connectivity, hygiene and the safety and security of our tourist places. Many countries find it difficult to get a visa and would like us to give them a visa on arrival. When I went to Spain, the tourism minister told me a
lot of people want to come to India as they love Bollywood, but they don’t have direct flights and find it difficult to get visas on arrival, that is currently offered to only citizens of nine countries. I am in talks with the home ministry to extend it to about 40 countries.

Your favourite holiday destination? Internationally, I love going to Switzerland. I went there many times for my shooting and I loved the Alps, the tranquility, cleanliness, the greenery and the warmth of the people there. In India, there are lots of places that I love, but my favourite is Kashmir. Till the terrorism problem happened, for almost a decade, every summer I would be shooting there. I also like Goa, as it is happening and is lively and affordable. My family would always join me in the summer holidays when I shot in Kashmir. A few months back, my family members went to Jammu and Kashmir for a holiday. I had planned to go but could not. They said they missed me as they got nostalgic remembering the times and places where they jumped, slid and sledged as kids. Just hearing this from them made me so happy.

Do you miss being a part of the film industry? If Charan (Ram Charan) was not there, I would have missed it. But I have no regrets since he took over and I feel connected to films through him. He is hard-working and focused and I am happy that he is no longer the brat that he was as a child.

What excited you to develop these lighthouses? Our ministry runs 180 lighthouses along the coastline of India. They are important navigational tools for ships, but I realised that they can become important tourist destinations. And of the three we have identified, India's first will be developed just off the coast of Mumbai. It’s a unique lighthouse and you have to sail to the island that makes it attractive for tourists. It’s a historical island with a fort built around it by Kanhoji Angre. We feel that the partnership with the ministry of tourism should have happened a long time ago. But, better late than never. These are beautiful assets waiting to be exploited for tourism. When I studied in Boston, I saw that the entire east coast of America has a number of lighthouses. It adds a full maritime experience and Europe and US do it naturally and very well. If we can recreate that in India, we can attract a lot of tourists both from India and abroad. Mumbai is one of the best coastal cities and this is the most underutilised asset we have. We live in Mumbai, but don’t even know what it is like to go to the sea. People around the world appreciate it, look after it well and even exploit it as a government. To me, it is exciting, personally and professionally.

Your favourite holiday destination? Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It’s just by default that I have become minister of shipping, but I love the sea, I love swimming and diving.

Saif is fully loaded

Saif is fully loaded

Saif as Raja? That’s perfectly understandable. He is the closest you get to royalty in Bollywood. Saif as the triggerhappy Bullett Raja? Well, that is filmmaker Tigmanshu (Tishu) Dhulia’s vision.
Tishu says the script was with him for a while. But after the critically and commercially acclaimed Paan Singh Tomar, there was a clamour to do Raja. Yes, he had originally called his film just Raja. “It was Saif’s suggestion to call it Bullett Raja,’’ he reveals.
Talking of their bombastic combination, the Paan Singh director continues, “I worked with Soha Ali Khan on Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns and I’m sure she spoke to her brother about this script. Saif, in turn, expressed a desire to work together.’’ And, that’s how the Nawab and Tishu took their association forward. “To have an actor with a vernacular image playing this role would have been boring,’’ says Tigmanshu. “I needed someone like Saif, who is charming and sophisticated, because it’s more of a challenge to get him to play something the audience will not normally associate him with. My hero is not dark and intense. He is endearing and impulsive. In fact, Saif never starts a fight in the film, but he ensures he always finishes it.’’

Besides being a bit sanki, another endearing quality that Saif has in the film is that he’s a dil-phenk aashiq (a true blue lover boy). Interestingly, this is the first time he has teamed up with Sonakshi Sinha. Talking of their pairing, Tishu says, “After years, I saw a screen couple that has the Amitabh-Rekha magic. Saif and Sona are in sharp contrast with each other and therein lies the interest factor. According to me, they make a fantastic jodi.’’
Bullett Raja, produced by Brandsmith Motion Pictures and Moving Pictures Production, and presented by Fox Star Studios, releases November 29.

Woman molested visarjan procession

Ganpati visarjan means a day of mixed blessings for us photographers. It is a holiday, yet we are ‘on duty’. Our minds are always working, looking for the best shot and the unusual occurrence. The crowd is always moving, the mass of people is like a river, constantly shifting and changing.

Pervert No 1

Girl molested, groped by a group of men, Lalbaugcha Raja, Bharatmata cinema
In the midst of the mayhem, crimes and other misdeeds often go unnoticed. But being at a vantage point, my lens happened to capture the shocking incident of a female devotee being molested in the middle of the crowd that was following Lalbaugcha Raja.

Pervert No 2

How it happened
In order to get a bird’s-eye view of the scene, I was shooting from atop the Lalbaug flyover. A couple of my colleagues were there too, as well as other lensmen. My aim was to find out-of-the-ordinary images, but I never imagined what I would see.

MiD Day photographer Atul Kamble reveals the shocking scenes that he witnessed while covering Lalbaugcha Raja's visarjan procession

Pervert No 3

Girl molested, groped by a group of men, Lalbaugcha Raja, Bharatmata cinema
This girl was repeatedly groped by a group of men as she tried to make her way away from the crowd that was following Lalbaugcha Raja near Bharatmata cinema, Parel, on Wednesday afternoon.

Lalbaugcha Raja takes a turn at the Bharatmata Cinema junction, on Ambedkar Road. It’s an ideal spot for photographs, and I was stationed on the flyover just near the junction. I was looking for what we call ‘mood’ shots, something different from the regular images of the procession. Hence my eye was on the movement of the people.
Girl molested, groped by a group of men, Lalbaugcha Raja, Bharatmata cinema
On the prowl: Photographs taken by our lensman show the shocking way in which a young girl is repeatedly grabbed and molested by some men in the procession. The molester seems to be adept at disguising his movements, making it look like he is just jostling people. But the photographs spell out the truth. Pics/Atul Kamble

Around 1.30 pm, I noticed a girl moving quite fast, as if she was battling her way through the crowd. This seemed unusual to me so I trained my lens on her. She seemed to be accompanied by a boy and two other women. I then noticed that there were a few men who seemed to be touching people excessively in the guise of pushing them along.
Girl molested, groped by a group of men, Lalbaugcha Raja, Bharatmata cinema
I actually saw the man grab the girl, not once but several times, on the pretext of stabilising himself. In the heaving mass of people around, the girl was already finding it difficult to keep her balance and to keep moving.
Girl molested, groped by a group of men, Lalbaugcha Raja, Bharatmata cinema
Fighting off a molester was next to impossible. Moreover, as the pictures show, the man was adept at disguising his movements, to make it look like he was just jostling people like everyone else was doing. But his actions were clearly that of a molester. There also seemed to be other men with similar intentions.
Girl molested, groped by a group of men, Lalbaugcha Raja, Bharatmata cinema
These men appeared to be professional molesters, mingling with the crowd with one specific aim, just like pickpockets do. But what they steal is worse than purses and wallets.

My heart went out to the girl, but there was little I could do from the height of the flyover. There was no way to alert the police in the vicinity, and I could not see any uniforms nearby, as all the cops were near the idol’s truck, which was quite far away from where this incident was happening. All I could do was to keep shooting and capture the heinous act and hope that the pictures help bring the culprits to justice.
Cops speak
Joint Commissioner of Police, Sadanand Date, said, “I cannot comment on it unless I see the photographs.”
Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region), Praveen Salunkhe, said, “I am on leave.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV), D Karale, said, “I cannot comment on this as I am busy at my relative's place.”
Senior Police Inspector Sunil Tondwankar of Bhoiwada police station said, “There was a foolproof bandobast at the spot. We have not come across any such incident or complaint so far.”

Ahmedabad Times Fresh Face 2013

It’s time for a glam makeover

As Clean & ClearTM Ahmedabad Times Fresh Face 2013 heads towards the final lap, it was time for a makeover session for girls and guys. And, it was fun time at Zion Spa and Salon, where hairstylists and make-up artists turned our 18 finalists into headturners with their expertise. Most finalists had lots of querries and despite their initial reservations about experimenting with hairstyles and getting a ‘new look’, they eventually were more than willing to glam it up. The stylists went about straightening, curling, trimming, doing fringes and side bends, adding layers depending on the female participants’ face cut, hair texture and existing hairstyle. Most male finalists opted for spikes, straightening or Mohawks. And after a makeup session, these youngsters struck lens-perfect poses during the photo-op.
